- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45Ok lets cut to the chase... Photoshop wins.
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36LMAO Giants......
- bluerei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33The new Photoshop CS3 Extended makes GIMP look like a prehistoric tool. With all the new features including 3D model and video import, GIMP is just what it's name says, gimped when it comes to features professional designers need.
- osomguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+27I don't see GIMP making it into advertising agencies or design studios. Sorry!
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21If GIMP counts as a giant, then it must be 3 feet tall, hunched over, and is, uh, gimpy. Photoshop is a giant, GIMP is a midget.
I like GIMP and use it often enough but it's not in the same class as Photoshop (but GIMP is still a fabulous free program).
*Don't get me started about the typos in the summary! - chubbstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16this is a horrible "comparison" article. it barely covers anything but the basic, all-pervasive debates and what it does cover is ruined by its lack of detail and brevity.
this does nothing to settle any debate between gimp and photoshop an merely allows people already decided to reinforce their views. - trollenlord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yup, no dynamic effect layers that you can stack either, the lack of those makes Gimp workflow pre-historic and exremely unproductive. Gimp doesn't support crafting sort of imagery production at all. Gimp also has got an appalling GUI.
- Derfus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20GIMP is no competitor to photoshop, it never will be.
- Leomarth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I use GIMP because it meets my needs and it's free. YMMV
- Cbaar, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17I like the GIMP and use it regularly (photo editing for relatives, game bitmaps); of course it has fewer features than PS, but still more than I probably will ever use.
In the beginning I was confused a bit by its UI, but learned to use it in about an hour; I am grateful to have such an IMP available on my Linux and BSD systems.
In summary: Imho The GIMP is better than MS Paint and less costly than Adobe Photoshop. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That's my one major gripe with the Gimp. The name. Have you ever tried suggesting someone "try using the gimp"? It never turns out well.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Photoshop > *
- samelevel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9How in the hell did a story with a description like this make it to the front page?
Someone please help fund public schooling. Our children are becoming stupider at a frightening rate. - elvenseven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm a full time graphic designer and that made me chuckle.
- corners, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Zed: Bring out the Gimp.
Maynard: But the Gimp's sleeping.
Zed: Well, I guess you're gonna have to go wake him up now, won't you?
Sorry couldn't resist - uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Stop this Gimp crap already. Gimp is not professional-grade software. Photoshop will always win because it has hundreds of developers who are professionals, not hobbiests. Also, Gimp's UI looks like it was laid out by a gimp.
- dw2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Comparing Photoshop to Gimp is retarded. buried.
- danandre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5GIMP is gimped compared to Photoshop. End of story.
- JMIJohnny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Does anyone actually check what they are typing or how they spell it? It's "cost" not "cast," why is "Giants" capitalized, there should be a comma after "second," "most" not "must," "powerful" not "powerfull," the dollar sign should be before 600 and not after it, "make" should be capitalized, and why does it tell YOU the reader to know your "opponent?" it should tell you to know your "options." Lastly, why does this tell me to "read it now?" I already would have made my mind up...I don't need further encouragement from someone who can't spell or write to save their life. In case no one has noticed, there is a button that says "check spelling." Just putting that out there.
P.S.
"Graphics," not "graphic." - ilnyckyj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6hmm...Gimp is a giant?
- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A comparison written by geeks who haven't the foggiest idea how to use 1/10th of what Photoshop has to offer. How about we see professional DESIGNERS do a comparison?
- mellowtom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4CMYK support, Pentone Colors support, Vector support, Drag and Drop to InDesign support, Integration with Adobe Bridge and Photo, Illustrator support for .ps files with layers etc.
As a graphic designer Photoshop wins hands down. No contest. - praveenmarkandu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4buried. title is inaccurate
- wonderchemist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"I'd say the price of GIMP competes pretty well."
Until you start losing clients cause you get your colors wrong all the time. - patricks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And I'd be willing to bet you that 100% of the 80% of people using a pirated copy would say that Gimp is no competitor to Photoshop.
Infact, I bet there are more users of pirated Photoshop versions than there are Gimp users period. - CasaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This article is nothing more than a geek VS graphical artist comparison..
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm actually using Paint.NET for most things now... Quick and is a nice little image editor.
- MGustafson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't be sorry...
Every time there a fricking article on GiMP you can rest assured there's a Pulp Fiction quote coming shortly... - patricks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Gimp is a "giant"? I must have missed the part where it became relevant.
- sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"giants"? buried as innacurate.
- litolist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Gimp also has got an appalling GUI."
Don't forget about GIMPshop...still not my cup of tea, but IMO better than the original.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMPshop - airiox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3why would you digg down a duggmirror link? thats absurd? you do know the site is down, do you not?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2look, gimp is a nifty program, and a testament to open source dedication. But its no Photoshop.
- pauliusuza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2* Meets my needs
* I use it because its free
You guys don't really get what this is all about. Photoshop's main selling point is not it's features like brushes layers and filters, it's about how streamlined the interface is and how it helps professionals save time while working on commercial projects. Now try to use GIMP to do the kind of work you see at http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=137 and post the results to DIGG with the title "W!CK3D 2D painting made with GIMP", I would love to see that. - rekanize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This "article" is pretty flawed from the get-go. Marked as "lame."
P.S. I have nothing against Gimp, but it's not for graphics professionals, despite its areas that are impressive. - Dipster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't this what the PhotoGimp mod is for? So that people who aren't used to the GIMP UI can use it...?
- Amoeba16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worst. Write-up. Ever.
- Jhorra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I was just going by the description: "one is a commercial software that casts nearly 600$"
To subtle huh? - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gimp... a giant?
I dearly wish it was, but at the moment, its a powerful program with a ***** interface, and very few people actually use it - 68024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hobbiests.
- conradovina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, maybe not. It got buried already.
- berwiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Gimp is cool, but it is no Photoshop.
Buried as lame. - j4son, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd say the price of GIMP competes pretty well.
True, it can't compete with PS.
What do you expect for $0? - doktorrocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a happy GIMP user, I'd have to say that GIMP isn't appropriate for 95% of the non-professionals, either.
For basic image tweaking, cropping, re-sizing, and annotating (which I suspect is what the overwhelming majority of non-professionals need) there are a dozen easier to use free tools. The crippled version of photoshop or whatever else came with your scanner or camera is good enough for most. Personally I use Faststone. As they add more capabilities to it I find myself using GIMP less and less.
I like GIMP for what it is, but I haven't ever had cause to recommend it to anyone else. I can't see subjecting people to the UI learning curve for what they want to do. - razorsharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're a professional use Photoshop on a Mac, if you're not a professional use GIMP on Linux. Is there something I'm missing?
- conradovina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It became a giant the minute this article came to the digg front page.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. When I don't need to fire up PhotoShop or a client just needs a small editor reccomendation it's Paint.NET all the way. The feature set is good, it's really fast and the UI is nice.
- conradovina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's wrong with hobbits?
- kidd3ckz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YES.
I can only use GIMP with one arm too.... kinda limiting. - everfresh59, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The name "gimp" itself is pretty self explanatory when compared to "Photoshop". I mean really....that's like having Honda name a car "Lemon"..
