- srg13, on 03/16/2009, -0/+31Gnome Do is definitely one of the most awesome application launcher and manager there is. With Docky I reckon that it blows any taskbar/start menu/panel/dock out of the water.
- lassegs, on 03/16/2009, -1/+21Hands down the best dock/launcher application of any of the platforms. Thanks goes out to djsiegel, DBO, lamalex and all those other guys that make the Linux desktop experience very attractive and effective.
- amk29j, on 03/16/2009, -0/+16Does it matter? It's still awesome. (I say this as a Mac OS X user)
- acemilo, on 03/16/2009, -4/+17Who cares? Apple stole most of its visuals from linux and they're even unix based, but they give NOTHING back to the open source community. The least they could do is release itunes for linux. Just look at the compiz effects to see what the next mac os will look like.
- dullnation, on 03/16/2009, -0/+12Quicksilver is not made by apple, though is closed source.
- midtown, on 03/17/2009, -0/+11Gnome-Do is ALL about keyboard shortcuts. Have you ever used it?
- andsalvatierra, on 03/16/2009, -0/+8Been using Gnome-Do for a few months now, and as a result, I've barely used any of the menus on the Ubuntu panel. It's fantastic for speeding through your daily computing routines.
I agree with the article, though - needs to be more configurable when it comes to visibility / autohide. - jhchrist, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8On mac os, the dock and quicksilver aren't integrated, so its not quite the same.
- munikho, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7i'm jealous.....
combine this with the new notifications in ubuntu, and i think things are starting to look real nice. - srg13, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6While I'm not a fan of Mono, it's a stupid idea to not use it just because it's similar to a Microsoft technology...
- BuhSnarf, on 03/16/2009, -0/+6Think it's f-spot, but I like what you did there ;)
- strangeman, on 03/17/2009, -0/+6AWN is just slow.. takes lots of resources, loads slowly and looks ugly when the plugins load.
- f0ad, on 03/16/2009, -0/+5Here are some instructions from the Gnome Do people on how to get the latest version installed with Ubuntu
http://do.davebsd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Install ... - HonoredMule, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5IE shows html pages and runs scripts derived from ECMAScript.
Firefox shows html pages and runs scripts derived from ECMAScript.
Same damn thing. - cheeze_ballz, on 03/16/2009, -0/+5anybody know how to get it updated in the ubuntu repositories? the current version there is 0.6.1. as far as i can tell. (running 8.10)
- hansrodtang, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5"Shiki Colors, lol."
I prefer the Dust theme my self, really awesome. - zip000, on 03/16/2009, -1/+5I used Gnome Do/Docky for a couple of weeks recently. It looks neat, and it does a lot of stuff, but to be honest I prefer just using the plain old gnome panels.
I just don't see what's so special about the whole "dock" idea...don't get me wrong - if you like it, use it. I don't mean to trash anything; I just don't understand the usefulness of it. - PsychTouch, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4one of the most interesting ongoing projects, every week there are some great news!
- plumeria, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4This looks really promising. Currently more a fan of Deskbar but with the addition of a dock I am compelled to give Do another go.
- strangeman, on 03/17/2009, -0/+4Do it man.. all other docks out there are crap compared to this.. "Do" doesn't take up any noticable resources, looks great and feels smooth... oh yeah.. it also does what it advertises.. ;)
- janvessel, on 03/17/2009, -0/+4This is an AWESOME tool.
- lamalex, on 03/17/2009, -0/+4Ahh, good old fashioned FUD.
Listen people, there's nothing wrong with mono. The ***** you read on boycottnovell.com? Lies. Read the license, or ask a lawyer, it's safe to use, and fun to develop in. - inactive, on 03/16/2009, -0/+3I tried it, and I still use it, but due to lack of a Virtual Desktop managing thingy, I'm still using AWN, rather than Docky. While there are some small things I dislike here and there, I'd say it has great potential.
- srg13, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3"Ha ha, what a rip-off. On my Vista install, I can just hit the "Windows Key" by itself, start typing, and I get a list of programs AND user files already."
Um, no - that was actually a rip off of either Mac OS X's Spotlight, and/or Linux's Beagle and Tracker tools that were around way before Windows Vista. - daftman, on 03/17/2009, -1/+4@mrsteveman1
Mach is BSD Licence.
<a class="user" href="<a class="user" href="http://www.mklinux.org/development/Mach_FAQ.html%2 ... rel="nofollow">http://www.mklinux.org/development/Mach_FAQ.html&a ... ...</a> rel="nofollow"><a class="user" href="http://www.mklinux.org/development/Mach_FAQ.html%3 ... rel="nofollow">http://www.mklinux.org/development/Mach_FAQ.html&a ... ...</a>
NeXT rips source code from BSD kernel and Mach kernel, both are BSD Licence. <a class="user" href="<a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextstep%22" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextstep"</a& ... rel="nofollow"><a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextstep%3C/a%3E" ... rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextstep</a>< ...
OS X is based on NeXTand also additional BSD code
So surprise, surprise, the whole of Apple kernel is based on BSD licenced source code!!!
It is very well know that Apple took the BSD code the very same way as Microsoft took the TCP/IP stack from BSD.
Don't you just love BSD? It's like a bitch that get used and abused but complains.
> What does Apple have to do to "give back", package it on a ***** disk and mail it to people?
Think about it for a minute. Had Apple used GPL code instead of BSD code. Everyone will able to have technologies that Apple rip off and hide it for their advantages. People can compile their own Mac OS X and run on any machine they wish. It's not good for Apple but I don't really give a ***** about Apple.
> By the way, OS X has had a compositing desktop and 3D effects since beginning of this decade when compiz didn't even exist, so stop making yourself look stupid.
So? Enlightment has compositing desktop way before OS X. What's your point? - LastDitchHero, on 03/16/2009, -2/+5I love GNOME-Do, it makes doing everything easier from web browsing, opening files, launching programs, and even looks decent. Honestly, Microsoft and Apple need to take a hard look at Gnome Do (or any dock/start bar that is trying to be more friendly).
- PatrickBrown, on 03/16/2009, -1/+4"The downside of docky relative to AWN is that it still lacks support for many of the specialized components that users require in a panel replacement, such as a virtual desktop visualization, CPU and memory monitoring applets, and a tray icon area."
These are major downsides as far as docky goes (the traditional gnome-do itself though is quite useful). Also, I have found AWN to be quite consistent over the past year, a complaint of the author for leaving AWN. Hopefully Gnome-Do will improve though. - theaceoffire, on 03/17/2009, -0/+3No wonder I could never find it!
- srg13, on 03/17/2009, -0/+3Docky is a theme - If you have the newest version, you be able to change to it in the options.
- tomjowitt, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2I think docky is a major step up from something like AWN but I agree that one thing that it's missing is the ability to add items like system resources and desktop switching.
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2How do you update to 0.8.1 on Linux Mint?
Sorry I'm a noob. - watcht, on 03/16/2009, -0/+2I'd rather have a copy for free that actually I have the right to actually own and modify to add my own little things rather than paying apple and not have the right to modify anything.
- p1eiades, on 03/17/2009, -0/+2Installing in Ubuntu using PPA with key: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUZOQsNo_ws
- abbathdoom, on 03/16/2009, -10/+12Gnome Do + Linux Mint + Shiki Colors = Windows Killah
- strangeman, on 03/17/2009, -0/+2use keyboard shortcuts (crtl+alt+left/right/up/down) and/or compiz expo instead of the desktop switcher..
- lamalex, on 03/17/2009, -0/+2Somethng else is wrong, I use it on and ATI card, with the free driver, and a 64bit ubuntu. Runs great. Come chat in #gnome-do on freenode, we'll get you fixed.
- cosmicr, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2I tried gnome do, but I couldnt find any way to speed up my productivity. I already had my most commonly used programs on the panel(not a fan of the dock) as single click icons, plus with google desktop I just press ctrl-ctrl to find any files. What else could gnome-do 'do' for me?
- oobuntu, on 03/17/2009, -0/+2i didn't really understand the idea when i was just booting up my home machine for a few hours at a time and opening a handful of apps, but since i moved jobs and use ubuntu on the desktop full-time, now i get it.
i'm using virtual desktops heavily and the awn dock shows all my running apps from all desktops as icons. if i wanna switch to evolution or my virtualbox session, i just click the icon - no expose or screen/tab bar juggling required. also, with the launchers, i don't need to know if firefox is running already or not, i just click it - if its running then i get the window. if it's not running, it opens for me.
plus, the old version let me read todays dilbert or xkcd without opening a browser. i think they took that applet away due to instability though :( - omfgjeannie, on 03/17/2009, -0/+2<3 gnome-do~
- hansrodtang, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1I no longer use slow and messy menus thanks to Gnome-Do. I assigned Gnome-Do to th "Menu"-button, which gives me really fast access.
- NobodyWhoCares, on 03/16/2009, -1/+2They have a repository for the various Ubuntu builds, https://launchpad.net/~do-core/+archive/ppa
If it's not there, grab the source and build it yourself. Typically three commands to build and install it once you have the source. - waspinator, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Go here and follow the instructions to get the latest version:
http://do.davebsd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Install ... - inactive, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1Funny this. Just installed Gnome Do last night on my netbook. Love it. I'm not hugely experienced with Linux...can someone tell me if I have to install Docky separately - and will it run properly on lower specced hardware such as the netbook. It's an HP mie with the custom Ubuntu interface - do you think docky will play well with this?
- Feanor, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1It works well on some netbooks i"ve seen.
- RyanK76, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1Umm.. I don't understand why people want to put panel applets into Docky.
I have my Gnome-Do running the Docky Theme and have it set to autohide, while still having the default panel across the top (and still occasionally use the menus).
I can always see my battery state, wireless connectivity status, time and weather as well as all the system monitoring I want on the screen at all times, taking up very little screen real estate. I've gotten rid of the default bottom panel.
If the virtual desktop applet means so much to you, add it to your top panel. - mrsteveman1, on 03/16/2009, -8/+9Could you people who declare yourselves to be correct and constantly complain about Apple please get your facts right?
OS X is not BSD, it is OS X, there is a HUGE difference. The code base is from NeXTstep which used BSD4.3 components, but it predates FreeBSD entirely. It has been updated with FreeBSD code, some of the kernel code came from FreeBSD, the majority of it is Mach3 and NeXT code, or is derived from something NeXT did, like I/O kit. The high level frameworks are 100% Apple and NeXT developed, some userland components are FreeBSD derived, some of them are in-house apple stuff like launchd. The Window system is derived from something NeXT developed.
You take away all the Apple stuff, you are not left with a bsd system you are left with a non-functional pile of code.
Before you say "oh they just used someone elses stuff or paid for things they didn't know how to do on their own", they OWN NeXT and all the code that NeXT developed, and Steve Jobs started the damn company in the first place. For all intents and purposes, NeXT = Apple.
I am not aware of any situation where Apple has taken BSD licensed code and closed it after modifying and using it. Where Apple has used open source code and modified it, they make it available on their developer site. You can grab the code for the kernel if you like. What does Apple have to do to "give back", package it on a ***** disk and mail it to people?
By the way, OS X has had a compositing desktop and 3D effects since beginning of this decade when compiz didn't even exist, so stop making yourself look stupid.
And about this Gnome DO thing, i'm going to check it out, i don't care what it copies, i don't care who did what first and neither should any of you. But if you are going to bitch about it, you are going to be called out when you are wrong.
/rant - InorganicMatter, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Do you have anything better to do here than bash Mono with the (*****) "facts" you get from Boycottnovell?
- oobuntu, on 03/17/2009, -0/+1hey docky - fix the autohide to be like awn, then we'll talk..
- abbathdoom, on 03/17/2009, -2/+3Dude, go do some research.
- Vegabondsx, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Sure it's been said, but looks a lot like OS X's dock plus Quicksilver. Not that it's a bad thing, I think it's great assuming it works as fast and as Quicksilver does.
