Only if you **develop** for Windows, usually. That's not "most people's day-to-day work".
> 2) SQL Server Studio Management Express
See above.
> 3) Photoshop
Haha. What about it? Unless you do graphics for a living, Blender 3D, Inkscape, and the GIMP, for example, should serve /all/ your needs.
> 4) TortoiseSVN
There are good Linux equivalents and again you assume that "most people's day-to-day work" involved SVN/CVS.
> 5) IE 7 & 6 + FF (all on the same machine)
Where have you been living, mate? :-) You can run IE (even version 7) under Linux if you need to test some pages or whatever. - Microdot, on 10/22/2007, -12/+59look guys... im a die hard linux fan (and for the last 6 years, a mac user). i have several boxes that are setup with various distros of ubuntu/redhat/suse, and use redhat exclusively on all of my web servers. im now a mac user, but a nix guy at heart. but i cringe when i see stories like this. "ms is t3h d00m3d!!1!" - ubuntu is a great desktop os, and pretty good server os... but there wont be a time in the foreseeable future that it will be any real threat to ms or windows simply because the apps arent there. the common programs that avg joes are accustomed to are non-existant on the nix platform. there are 400 billion responses that you can give me like "but gimp is perfect" or "it comes with program x"... but until the day comes that someone can walk into their local computer place, buy a copy of adobe photoshop, the latest EA game like madden or the like, and throw it onto their linux machine without additional hiccups, restrictions, programs, or headache inducing setup... nix will not conquer the ms monopoly.
everytime i see the nix rules, ms doomed typed posts and stories, it does nothing but belittle the greatness that linux has achieved. let it stand on its own two feet... its a great os, it doesnt need your hype. - apologeticus, on 10/22/2007, -1/+38Why would Mississippi need to get ready for Gutsy Gibbon?
- deadbaby, on 10/23/2007, -5/+41Most people's day to day work includes running Visual Studio and SQL server?
- asdfuiop, on 10/22/2007, -5/+37Just torrented 7.10 yesterday =)
Still dual-booting with XP, but looking forward to the day I can shed my closed-source shackles - loganm10, on 10/24/2007, -3/+26Well reading these comments its obvious a few of you havent used linux in a while
Flash in x64 is the same as 32bit linux, you go to a site like youtube and a thing pops up saying "This site needs additional codecs to display properly", you click next like 3 times, bam, flash installed and working
and changing my resolution took exactly 4 clicks, i counted... I had time
And all this talk about "linux doesnt have this program!" is irrelevant, that is the software developers fault, they dont put out apps for linux simply because its not very popular, not because the platform isnt better - kbeeveer46, on 10/24/2007, -67/+89" ... provides all you need for daily work ...."
Unless you can get all of the following applications
1) Microsoft Visual Studio
2) SQL Server Studio Management Express
3) Photoshop
4) TortoiseSVN
5) IE 7 & 6 + FF (all on the same machine)
to work flawlessly on a Linux machine, Ubuntu will never replace my Windows machine for daily work.
You can't call me an MS fan boy because I am running Ubuntu right now but my point is that it will never replace Windows for most people's day-to-day work for a very long time. - schestowitz, on 10/22/2007, -10/+31DX10 is overhyped garbage. Use OpenGL.

- deadbaby, on 10/23/2007, -11/+31Who cares... most people don't need Photoshop. It does the most common tasks people require from a graphics editor.
- hamobu, on 10/23/2007, -1/+21I love Linux, but we are all forgetting one thing: Anything that will run on Linux will run in Windows, Why? Because Linux community are freedom loving bunch of people that really want to create the most useful software and that are not trying to lock you in. That is why Gimp. OOo, Abiword, apache, etc. will all run on any operating system. That is why no matter how good Linux gets, it will never be able to compete on features. What you have to compete on is philosophy. Philosophy of free software is:
1. Share with your neighbor.
2. You should own your software, and not merely "license" it.
3. You should be able to do what ever you want with your computer.
4. Your files are your own to open in what ever application you wish.
5. Information should be able to flow and be shared between people
6. etc.
Why should you feel like a criminal if you want to install same software on the second computer? Why should your own files lock you into a particular piece of proprietary software? Why should your hardware be hobbled and restricted to make sure that big business is getting paid? Why should your computer keep proving to the software companies that you are not a crook?
If you care about your freedom, use Linux. - NetElemental, on 10/23/2007, -0/+20I'm able to run photoshop CS2 perfectly fine, as well.
- riah, on 10/23/2007, -1/+20Photoshop CS2 installs and runs fine in WINE.
- ninjacob, on 10/25/2007, -0/+19That's why there's the Ubuntu recommended Add/Remove Applications utility directly under the Applications menu.
- deltaphc, on 10/23/2007, -5/+24What does "going sideways" mean?
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras (or use Synaptic)
And you'll get common video+audio codecs, Flash 9, Java 6, and a few other things.
That's just one way, though. You can simply double-click on an MP3 and it'll prompt you to install the necessary packages. - lusiad, on 10/22/2007, -0/+17I've never used any Linux-based OS before. I had an older Thinkpad lying around, so I thought I'd give it a try. Initial thoughts: The install was amazingly fast and clean. Everything worked perfectly the first time around. I had to enable the driver for my wireless card, but the OS actually directed me to do so. Fast, painless. I was really surprised at how fast my pitiful laptop seemed in comparison; Windows XP bogged it down so heavily that opening up more than one browser was painful. Three or more programs opened simultaneously would kill it. So far Ubuntu has taken everything I've thrown at it; even the eye-candy-rotating-cube effects work flawlessly! I of course agree with others who note that there's not substitution for Photoshop, etc. I use After Effects frequently, and I can't imagine finding a Linux-based replacement for it. That said, my old laptop is now totally usable for lots of daily tasks--looking forward to using it again. I'm beginning to see how Linux can have a real impact on communities stuck with old-generation equipment. As for the website--recommended. Wish I'd seen it earlier.
- sambapati87, on 10/24/2007, -37/+52just because there's thousands of free software titles doesn't mean they are any good.
and NO... GIMP != Photoshop - kettlechips, on 10/23/2007, -0/+15I guess Mac is also not ready for personal use, out of your list only Photoshop is on Mac OS,
- daftman, on 10/23/2007, -0/+15No we don't. We just need more OpenGL games.
- h0ly, on 10/22/2007, -0/+15I'm using Gutsy right now and I never had to do that.
- RichPowers, on 11/13/2007, -0/+14Ubuntu vs. Windows arguments aside, this is a great tutorial for first-time Ubuntu users. Unlike many other guides, this one has detailed step by step instructions with plenty of pics.
- jdhore1, on 10/22/2007, -2/+15you need IE installed for that to work, genius
- riah, on 10/23/2007, -0/+13Yep, Photoshop CS2 (and Dreamweaver 8, btw) install and run fine using the latest WINE, also. Just installed it yesterday.
- Macskeeball, on 10/23/2007, -2/+15Your house has been replaced by an operating system, and the same goes for your job? Interesting concept. ;)
- TriviallyTravis, on 10/22/2007, -0/+12I'm all about the development of a Ubuntu guide, but wtf does it have to do with "MS? Effin' fanboys...

- daftman, on 10/22/2007, -1/+12Yea, I mean they didn't threaten patent lawsuit for nothing did they?
They didn't pressure RedHat into signing patent deal for fun did they?
Wake up and smell the flowers, Linux is Microsoft competition like everyone else including Google, Sony, etc
Unlike you Microsoft actually think about the long term effect instead of waiting for Linux to be around the 40% market share. - Dylson, on 10/22/2007, -3/+13No.
- scyon, on 10/22/2007, -3/+13"Installation utilities which are easy to use, prebuilt, and install dependancies without the need for an internet connection?"
I'll give you that one, going into Applications | Add/Remove... Select your app(s) and click "Apply Changes" is really hard. Why, you don't even need to reboot most of the time!
Installing software on Linux should be much easier, involve reboots, entering 26 digits serial numbers and clicking Next many times. - daftman, on 10/22/2007, -1/+10> Because in the business world, chances are your customers are going to be running Windows?
When you program in Java, it doesn't matter whether your client run Windows or Linux or Mac.
> Well, yes, until there's a viable alternative.
Nope there won't be. What you are asking is for is just windows software to run native on Linux. I think what you want is just a free Windows. I suggest you pirate it if it cost your company too much.
@ Kamujin
I get paid to write software
My enterprise apps with IBM is on Linux with Java
My web app is using Rails
So I use Eclipse which supports, c/c++. python, ruby, etc - srg13, on 10/23/2007, -0/+9It is technically true, but you're probably being dugg down because it _does_ have drivers for most hardware. I haven't had anything in any of our computers fail to work out of the box - a big improvement from Feisty...
- daftman, on 10/23/2007, -1/+10Sure, install Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) and stop your ***** whining.
Ubuntu does that because of dumb American patents law. In Europe however, it comes free.
Try simply double click on divx, ogg files on Windows and see if they run. - Derrekito, on 10/22/2007, -3/+12negative. We need better DirectX support.
- brickbat, on 10/22/2007, -0/+9yes, no.
- brickbat, on 10/22/2007, -1/+10you don't need medibuntu or any 3rd party repo to do any of the things you mentioned. All those things are in restricted extras that get installed automatically when you click on an mp3 for the 1st time. Man you guys need to stop living in the past. All those hassles are over.
- jhshukla, on 10/22/2007, -0/+9wine?
- Macskeeball, on 10/22/2007, -2/+11At this point, the GIMP doesn't compare well with Elements either, because it has horrendously poor usabilty. I've read that the GIMP devs are finally going to be working on improving the UI. We'll see how that goes. The program also needs a new name.
- bieber, on 10/22/2007, -2/+10As a professional photographer, and ex-Photoshop user, I beg to differ on your point about the GIMP. If you bothered to actually learn its interface, you'd find that GIMP and the assorted free plugins available for it will offer you the vast majority of Photoshop's features, plus some extras. Yes, there are some things that you absolutely MUST have Photoshop to do, but I'm willing to bet that neither of us have to do any of those highly specialized tasks.
And as for your Radeon troubles, why don't you talk to ATI about that? They're the ones who have yet to release a decent driver, the Ubuntu folks have nothing to do with it. Although hopefully things will at least improve soon, with their release of hardware specs... - srg13, on 10/23/2007, -1/+9What's so hard about clicking 'Install restricted drivers', checking a box, and then clicking install the first time you play an MP3...
You only have to do that because it's illegal in the US because of software patents. - trogdoor, on 10/22/2007, -0/+8Easier to get screen shots of things like grub that way.
- NukularPower, on 10/22/2007, -1/+9Why update Xorg? Can you do this on Windows? This is what has MS scared:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYpJbUR9HQE&mode=re ... - inactive, on 10/22/2007, -4/+12No... I can do it in five.
- saifatlast, on 10/22/2007, -0/+8Well it's my understanding that Linux distros are generally available worldwide... still not really sure why they singled out Mississippi. Maybe it has a higher than usual proportion of Ubuntu users?
- daftman, on 10/23/2007, -9/+171. Why would I need to use Visual Studio when I'm running Linux? If I want to do .NET programming, I'll use MonoDevelop but for enterprise application, I prefer Java, C++
2. SQL Server? Why? What is with your obsession with running Microsoft products? Mysql, Postgresql, DB2, Oracle all run under Linux natively
3. Chances are if you are a developer, you will suck at graphics. Gimp would cover all your needs. If you still insist in using Photoshop, CS2 works well with Wine
4. TortoiseSVN has client for Linux depending on your DE. Try Kdesvn or rapidsvn. If you want more intergrated solution, use Eclipse and Subclipse
5. IE6? WTF? Dude just stay the ***** on Windows.
You are asking for a dumb request. You might as well ask, for air-cond, steering wheels when you switch from car to motorbike. - daftman, on 10/23/2007, -2/+10Yea and you actually use the additional functionality of CS3 or you just want it for the shiny-new feelings.
- deavik, on 10/22/2007, -1/+8It's possible to use the 32-bit flash plugin on 64-bit Firefox using nspluginwrapper. I use Arch myself, but I'm sure there's a debian package somewhere.
- edlowe0, on 10/23/2007, -0/+7My perfect desktop would have more pictures of naked ladies in it.
- daftman, on 10/22/2007, -2/+9if you think paint.net is better than gimp you are a ***** moron
- jahurt, on 10/22/2007, -1/+8Actually, on my machine Gutsy did exactly that (set up a 32-bit flash plugin on 64-bit Firefox using nspluginwrapper) with just a mouse click. Pretty slick...
- aywwts4, on 10/22/2007, -6/+13Gimp doesn't even begin to compare with photoshop in features, gimp is a nice competitor to elements or something like that.
Of all the wonders of open source the gimp is not an alternative for someone who really uses photoshop, it just isn't, don't try and sell it as such.
Linux is good, linux is great, I run ubuntu on all of my computers, but photoshop and the gimp is not equivalent. -
