- Gnascher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Hmm ... this needs more than a link to Mr. Robbins' Wikipedia page to be diggable in my eyes. Seems like people are reading the headline and thinking "Ooh, that sounds bad for Microsoft, I'll Digg it."
All the Wikipedia page has to say on the subject is that he worked at Microsoft "From 13 June 2005 to 9 January 2006," with no corroboration.
Link me to an industry watchdog webpage, or some leaked memo, and it'd be diggable, but for now this is crap. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Submitter needs learn grammar.

Agreed, no digg... show me an actual news story, not a linke to wikipedia.
-olly - garg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Chairs at Microsoft tremble in fear.
- salimfadhley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Totally unconfirmed
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seems you need to put on your glasses.
"Gentoo founder resigns Microsoft."
and you quote: "He is not to be confused with Microsoft interface designer Daniel C. Robbins"
who do you think Im talking about? - CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He could actually work at Google maybe help this new "Goobuntu" distro be as good as Gentoo is.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ooh, that sounds bad for Microsoft, I'll Digg it.
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is really old news... it was even posted on the gentoo forums...
- keikei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i sense a chair is going to fly!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is a hoax. This information was inserted by an anonymous user ( http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Daniel_Robbins&diff=34530794&oldid=33345167 ), who's only other contribution was editing the Goatse.cx article ( http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=82.2.119.231 ). It is no longer in the article
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah there seems to be a lot of inference in there as well. Even if the wiki article is correct, it says nothing about him resigning. For all we know he could have been fired or his position could have been eliminated or something. It's just not very much information. So no digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who wrote this title? It sucks ass. Also, since when is referencing Wikipedia "news"?
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I fail to see how this in any shape way or form constitutes news... especially considering Wikipedia's recent problems. Lame.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I cannot confirm nor deny anything in Wikipedia
- krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope Daniel is doing well wherever he is. Gentoo was the distro that really taught me about Linux, inside and out. I use Ubuntu now, but Gentoo will always be special to me. Daniel did good work with it, set up the framework for an awesome distro, and went into some major debt to do it. Here's to hoping he lands a killer spot somewhere.
- jmarki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can anyone find another information to verify this? A quick search on the web only shows lots of articles about him moving TO Microsoft a long time ago.
- tophfisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can confirm, as I just had an interview for a job from his old department. The official word is he left to spend time with him family, who lives out of Washington state. That’s what I was told...
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can anyone confirm this?
- doublezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree ... while this may be a news scoop ... there is no real corroboration at all with any credible support for this story other than the word of the author ???!!! I feel the scoop, be it true or not, was given to us prematurely or amateurishly ...!!!
- vyoming, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is that DIGG comment there.
Why shud wikipedia bother anyway about the article being digg'ed
I guess wikipedia have enough resources to withstand being digged right - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From the article, it looks like he never actually did any development, just competitive strategy crap.
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As fun as wikipedia is, this is not a real article. No real info, etc. How did this get to the front page?
- Sabot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I checked Robbins blog and there does not seem to be any mention of this. I think this is a hoax.
- wonderbud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yall are missing the point...
Gentooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo - doublezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, this story, while a little old, now does seem to be confirmed by independent news sources that quote both Robbins and Microsoft:
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6039101.html
http://news.com.com/Gentoo+Linux+founder+quits+Microsoft/2100-7344_3-6039101.html
According to the same news story posted at both the above news sites, Robbins says he quit (16 Jan) because working in the Microsoft Linux Lab did not enable him to fully use his technical abilities, and Microsoft said that he plans to work for another company (chief technical officer of ABC Coding Solutions, a company based in Albuquerque, N.M.) where "he will be focused on building in .Net on Windows" and that they wish him well in his endeavors. The Gentoo project itself said that Robbins' career moves have no affect on Gentoo. Hence to 'rumor' seems to be true afterall, but that does not excuse the original author of badly presenting the story without any real corroborating link.
What is interesting in the story is that Robbins will now earn his bread an butter working on Windows it seems and not Linux. Has the Linux world lost one of the great contributors to Windows? Will Linux defenders see this, in the same light as his move to work for Microsoft, as treason? Will pragmatists take a middle of the road approach and say that reality forces us to work in both environments and there is no dishonor in working with both since it may pave the way to greater user mobility? Will Windows advocates tout this as further evidence that Robbins' Linux related financial debts show the world that FOSS is potenetially economically unviable? Half-truths may be found somewhere in all those positions ... what do you think? - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ vyoming
I'm guessing they probably put that notice up because wikipedia is user editable and it is a warning that the entry now has a high likelihood that it was edited recently because of Digg. - michaeljsmalley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He probably needed to resign (if it's true) because he didn't have enough time to install Gentoo when he was working for Microsoft. Perhaps I'm killing the joke, but in case anyone here doesn't know it, installing Gentoo can be a daunting, and long install process if hardware isn't recognized immediately by the bootable install disc. I hear it runs extremely fast, as it's compiled by your system, for your system (custom), but I've also hear that it can take about 48 hours for it to install. That's a whole weekend without sleep... Now, I know that I could (as well as many other diggers) pull this off, but knowing you'd have to report to work on Monday to work for your biggest competitor, and be there at 8 AM to bat...
Basically all I just said is that anyone working 8-5 or any other close full time hours does not have enough spare time to get a working Gentoo box running without starting and stopping constantly during the install process so that they can go to work.
Okay... Take everything lightly. It's meant to be a joke. I'm running Mepis right now. It's the best distribution I've ever used, and I've tried more than a few (including Ubuntu "Breezy Badger", which I wrote a tutorial on marginalizing the known challenge of getting a PCI wireless card (the Belkin F5D7000 U.S. version specifically) over at linuxquestions.org) installed.
So I do know a thing or too. Not everything, but quite a bit.

- idiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Funny. This. Before that someone talk about a rumor of this same subject in one of the Gentoo forums: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3106561.html#3106561
This is beginning to sound like one of those Google rumors when after hearing ir again and again from different sources, it finally ends up being true. - beandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A link to a STUB on Wikipedia? Oh my lame. No digg.
- redsocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too lame to digg it. It's pathetic.
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gentoo install wasn't/isn't always daunting. The GRP worked ok. I feel safe in saying that as I built the first full deployment of it for Gentoo, including all the original arch live cd's with GRP installs.
Daniel may have left to spend time with his family. Family is very important to him (and rightly so).
Hope he's doing well wherever he is these days.
Gerk - vidalinux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/02/14/1736230 is true!!!!! jajajaja :D M$ sucks

- FuManchu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I can confirm the rumour. Daniel left Micro$oft and is now part of FuWare Inc, my diabolical front to conquer Western Civilization via computer software.
He was at MS only long enough to perform essential "intel" work --gaining access to all of the secrets of all of the Windows versions OS source code.
We will soon be coming out with v 0.5 beta of SoftBunTuYoo, the first OS that will run on any machine and be 100% compatible with any Linux or MS Windows program.
To be a beta tester, join the SoftBunTuYoo Foundation for $25 US.
Just put the cash in a coffee can with a resealable lid, bury it at least 1 meter deep in your back yard, and it will be collected by one of our underground couriers. - vidalinux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0LMAO I hope this is real, he needs to find a good job not this crap. Soon we will see that Robbins moves to google :)

no digg though for lack of punctuation, poor grammar, and using wiki. - ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Will Windows advocates tout this as further evidence that Robbins' Linux related financial debts show the world that FOSS is potenetially economically unviable?"
Really, who cares what Windows advocates think? If someone is REALLY a large enough Windows fan to point to something as simple as THIS as a reason that FOSS is not economically viable, they're already enough of a moron that you'll never convince them otherwise anyway.
-olly - oDin420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0straight from the linked page.
