- tj111, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Came into the Linux world ~6 months ago with Ubuntu. Starting to want to get my feet wet in some other distributions, and Gentoo definitely looks interesting, having the whole system built around my hardware must have notable speed gains. I'm gonna download it and give it a go.
- jdhore1, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1Pro tip: It isn't. I do a linux podcast and we recently reviewed Ubuntu (and my cohost runs Gentoo) and the performance in our performance tests was so similar that it wound up being a statistical dead heat and as you prolly know, it doesn't take 6 hours to compile and install GNOME on Ubuntu. If you want a optimized distro, try out ArchLinux.
- kimsonsolutions, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1what's the name and adress of your podcast ?
- sq377, on 07/11/2008, -0/+2You will actually be slowed down. Whatever performance you may gain is lost in the 3 days it takes to compile a usable system. If you are concerned about security, then Gentoo is a good solution as you can compile hardened sources.
- Xyc0, on 07/11/2008, -0/+1That's if you know where to find those sources and how to implement them securely.
