- Philluminati, on 01/29/2008, -8/+237This is just Beryl or Compiz Fusion. It's not exactly news. There are thousands of these videos on youtube
- Philodox, on 01/29/2008, -6/+107"Gentoo Linux - Your Video Card When You're Not Playing Games" which will be an awful lot of the time since you're running Linux.
I kid! I kid! - ForbesBingley, on 01/29/2008, -2/+77While it's visually interesting, this kind of thing has been done to death, now. Still a nice sample of video...
- schestowitz, on 01/29/2008, -21/+61Great frame rate and good Gentoo promotion.
- TiMMY8765, on 01/29/2008, -0/+37I'm waiting for the day when gentoo can use my video card as a general purpose processor to speed up compile times
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -5/+40All those days of compiling finally paid off!
- thtroyer, on 01/29/2008, -9/+44Why is he being buried? This is the fastest example of Compiz I've ever seen.
Gentoo FTW! (I'm biased, I know. :D ) - Smok3y, on 01/29/2008, -10/+45This is Compiz Fusion, and is not Gentoo specific, please do not promote it as such.
- andycr512, on 01/29/2008, -6/+39I think the different approaches can be summed up as:
Gentoo: Install what you need
Ubuntu: Remove what you don't - sk1ll2, on 01/29/2008, -7/+37dugg for correct usage of "your" and "you're"
- cyberdork33, on 01/29/2008, -2/+29that's really the point of the distro...
- aldenhg, on 01/29/2008, -3/+27It's not just about the eye candy. Compiz Fusion adds a lot of usability to the desktop with the cube and the Expose-like functions.
- Phocion55, on 01/29/2008, -1/+24You'd be pleasantly surprised how incredibly small the system footprint is for Compiz Fusion.
- mCanada, on 01/29/2008, -3/+22You actually don't need a beefy vid card to do this. I had C2D / onboard 945GM gfx (64MB shared) and it pretty much looked like the setup on the video (not quite as smooth but very close). My understanding was it was a function of good driver support (the intel 945 series was well supported). ATI cards less so (this may have changed don't yell at me). I found the cube implementation far more intuitive than many people in the blogosphere (sp?) gave it. One quck mouse wheel and you literally felt a physical connection to where your next work space was. It's spacial, where as virtual desktops seem simply "virtual". To me virtual desktops are meaningless they don't have a presence in my memory, the cube places items in a "Second Life" sort of way where I can remember it.
- VinceNoir, on 01/29/2008, -1/+19Go and use it before commenting on it. It increased my productivity a good deal at work. For one thing, the Expo plugin (allows you to select from all open windows as thumbnails) makes task switching much easier than Alt-Tab in MS Windows.
The multiple desktops has always been a productivity aid for me since I don't have to do the stupid window shuffling that MS Windows forces you to do. Instead I set up multiple desktops and leave all apps exactly where I want them. I also make sure that apps that are related are on the same desktop. Desktop 1 is usually work mail. Desktop 2, current projects for work. Desktop 3, things that are in the process of being built or processing that I'm waiting for completion of. Desktop 4, Personal IM, remote desktop (using NX) of my app server at home, etc... Never need to minimize a damn thing. Minimizing if for broken OSes. Compiz-Fusion simply expands on that and makes it much easier for people to see the utility. My boss never "got" multiple desktops until I showed him the cube in Compiz-Fusion.
There's far more to Compiz-Fusion if you're an advanced enough user. Most Windows users simply are held back by their OS's lack of ability. But, mark my words, when MS releases the SAME EXACT functionality, they will be praising MS for being innovative yet again... - inactive, on 01/29/2008, -3/+21Get back to work!
Compiling! - thtroyer, on 01/29/2008, -3/+20I'm not sure I'd characterize Ubuntu as having 'bloatware'. The way it's setup, there's definitely more installed and more generalized configurations, so of course, it'll be a bigger system.
Gentoo is lean since you only install/configure what you want. Application-wise, Ubuntu isn't exactly bloated... not any more than any other Desktop OS, like Windows or OSX. - Barbosa, on 01/29/2008, -1/+17I use Linux but that simply is not true bluedemon31... There is a compatibility list at WineHQ that shows exactly what games work and how well. So far my experience has been that, while many games (and other Windows applications) run under Wine, there are many that require configuration or they simply don't work at all... Yet. I prefer open source over MS for many reasons besides windows compatibility. Wanting Linux to run all Windows apps and be just like Windows misses the whole point.
- ProducedRaw, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15The antagonist is still emerging. Give it a few.
- spyd3rweb, on 01/29/2008, -1/+16Guess the server has lots of flashy eye candy ***** running on it.
- Qumahlin, on 01/29/2008, -7/+21The issue is "why" should MS be doing it? Not a single thing shown there helped productivity or use of the computer at all. Eye candy is nice, but its just that...eye candy. Before you mention the cube and expose type functions you can add similar functions to windows.
- VinceNoir, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12No gimicks. Compiz-Fusion aids productivity if you are advanced enough to grasp it and use the features. Don't mistake the crippling of the desktop that MS does for being "utility". Another fine example of productivity enhancement from Compiz-Fusion is being able to set window transparency. I leave a "post-it note" app open and set it to nearly invisible so I can look through it as I do other things. But as soon as I need to focus on it to get details for the day's projects all I have to do is shift my focus to it all the while not missing what's happening behind the note itself. It truly allows you to do two things at once. Windows does not.
- JasonBates, on 01/29/2008, -14/+26yeah this is real, this is an example of what MS should be doing! Since they have so much money and stuff, its sickening, Linux isnt as widely used like as it should be :( Ubuntu and Gentoo aswell as Redhat pure rock!
- zzz@tkz, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11Really damn efficient.
- craftyguy, on 01/29/2008, -4/+15Well considering that this video is showing Gnome, and Ubuntu runs Gnome by default, they will essentially look the same. Only difference is Gentoo doesn't include 'bloatware' by default.
- weizbox, on 01/29/2008, -1/+12def shouldn't be news since this article was posted in May of 07
but.. people do like seeing their eye candy.. go figure :) - xkrwlng, on 01/29/2008, -1/+12Apparently, "Your Video Card When You're Not Playing Games" is just like "Your Website When You're Not Being Dugg".
dugg. - thtroyer, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11Compiz-fusion runs on a lot of different Linux distros. In this case, it's being demoed on Gentoo.
I have to throw up a flag of caution for trying out Gentoo. It is not a casual distro. If I had to reinstall it on my laptop from scratch (stage3), it'd probably take me a whole day on the command line to get the system installed and built up to having compiz-fusion running. My first attempts at Gentoo were messy... took me three attempts to put it on an old G3 laptop (had some hardware issues with it though)... and while I understand the process a lot better, it's still very time consuming.
I'm not putting Gentoo down. I use it every day and it's a damn fine Linux distribution -- I love it. It's just that Gentoo (unfortunately) does not really cater towards the Linux newbies, nor does it take well for casual demoing. There are definitely better distros for _that_. (I know Sabayon has some form of Compiz/Beryl that can be run straight from their liveCD, that's an option. If you have any intention of installing it to the hard drive, pick up Ubuntu (which, I'm not sure if Compiz is at all enabled running from the liveCD.))
If, later down the road, once you know and like Linux and ready for an in-depth and intensive experience, Gentoo will still be here. You're still welcome to try it now.
As a Gentoo user, that's my $.02... I know, not worth much anymore (darn inflation)... - Sabretou, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10How does the Cube help more than simply switching workspaces, which is already possible in nearly all Linux distros?
- Smok3y, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11I don't mean to sound like a angry, but I don't see Compiz Fusion anywhere in the title or description, this person doesn't mention it at ALL.
The title actually implies that this is the work of Gentoo, which is completely disrespectful to the Compiz Fusion devs. Comes off as distro fanboyism to me. - MWeather, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10What else is your GPU doing when you're not gaming?
- JDRay, on 01/29/2008, -3/+13It's news to some of us. This is the first time I've seen Compiz Fusion in action. Any idea how well something like that would run on my MacBook or iMac? Does CF require high-power graphics cards, or is it just really damn efficient?
- bruenig, on 01/29/2008, -7/+16I am too stupid to use gentoo, let me tell everyone to use ubuntu instead. I mean if I am too stupid to do it, then no one can. Har har har. Idiot.
- bluedemon31, on 01/29/2008, -2/+11True... I've been PWNED.
- MWeather, on 01/29/2008, -5/+14So you're saying you've never used it?
- fusama, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9spying on you.
- ihateblogspam, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Mirror: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v_5kfSjSb0
- zzzpoohzzz, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9but the thing about compiz fusion on linux is that it doesnt kill your computer for resources like the most bloated OS ever (i mean vista if somehow you didnt pick up on that)
- KloroFormd, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Yes.
http://www.compiz-fusion.org/ - ceejam88, on 01/29/2008, -4/+12I think he was just implying that he was running gentoo. Chill out...
- PatrickBrown, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7You can also disable / enable selective features. To suggest that there is no need for any of it is to be ignorant of its capability to increase production. Can you over-do it? Yes. Can you also use it in a manner that doesn't just add eye-candy but actually makes it easier to function? Yes.
- ChimeraHero, on 01/29/2008, -2/+9Anyone know what music track that video is set to?
- bbardlbradd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7Uh... wtf?
- DeathAxe, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8Mae - Futuro
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7Why the subjunctive? Stop saying "would" and do it.
- fusama, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6So true. Why do I need a bittorrent *tracker* running on startup let alone installed, for example.
...and yet gcc doesn't come installed by default, wtf? (at least for some versions of ubuntu) - chambrot, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7Site can't handle digg effect. Try to keep up. Haha.
- TnTBass, on 01/29/2008, -2/+8While nothing new, it is exceptionally tantalizing!
- ohmysac, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6No you do NOT need a beefy video card or even a beefy system to do things like this. I had compiz fusion running very smoothly with an old Dell C610 laptop. (Pentium 3 1ghz, First gen Radeon 16mb vid memory, 512mb ram) The open source drivers work well with the older of the radeon cards.
- tvanwyk, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6@ VinceNoir - then your boss is a twit. Seriously.
This is one of the more nicely done videos I've seen of Compiz-Fusion, but people should admit it has been done to death (further, it's not news).
I get the same functionality (in terms of productivity) on Fluxbox with four virtual workspaces. Maybe even more because I'm saving resources by not having all the overhead.
Just because one can have wobbly windows and stuff exploding on screen doesn't mean that one should. Besides, if it's all about "visualizing" virtual desktops, that could be done without the flames and wobbly Windows.
(Before you ask, I have used it. It was fun for awhile, and then I got to work.) -
