Gelatin: Ubuntu 8.04 theme proposal
wiki.ubuntu.com — The "Gelatin" theme retains the much of the classic Ubuntu look, but includes fresh and unique design features.

- Dokument, on 01/02/2008, -25/+5Ah hell. why would i want an os that i cant even understand what everything says?
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+18There is always the english version...
- Fratz, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3C'mon, Ubuntu fans. Dokument was clearly joking.
- DocHoliday22, on 01/02/2008, -3/+13Much better than the older themes, but still needs work.
- elnerdo, on 01/02/2008, -5/+4.. It seems really similar to Human... except worse.
- neio, on 01/02/2008, -2/+7Like a woman.
- avatarpalin, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14subtle smooth.... and yet uncontrollable.... The kind of creature that can be so precious yet tear your heart asunder....
- Dylson, on 01/02/2008, -5/+1Sounds like a personal problem.
- GreatSunJester, on 01/02/2008, -2/+6Sounds like someone doesn't know what a women is! :)
- syphern, on 01/02/2008, -3/+1No way man once you tap that and get the OOOOOOOH and AAAAH out of her she is yours for LIFE!
- Dylson, on 01/02/2008, -5/+1Sounds like a personal problem.
- avatarpalin, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14subtle smooth.... and yet uncontrollable.... The kind of creature that can be so precious yet tear your heart asunder....
- Onestone, on 01/02/2008, -8/+25Also, be sure to check Union, another excellent Hardy theme proposal:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ...- abandonedhero, on 01/02/2008, -10/+11I can guarantee you if that was the default theme in Ubuntu, nobody would use it. There isn't nearly enough contrast and differentiation between the windows and everything else. Also, the top menu bar looks like crap. Why not have it extend 100%?
- DeadPixel2, on 01/02/2008, -3/+6I like it much better than Gelatin! It's very graphical, beautiful and it's still in the Ubuntu style.
- killthelight, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7I really like this theme actually. It looks as pretty as Ubuntu should.
The windows might have to end up a bit more neutral though. - spoulson, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13I agree that Union needs more contrast, but otherwise it looks very sharp!
- jasz, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10I liked Union better... Gelatin seems kinda dull...
- manitoba98xp, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2I believe that Union looks too blended....pretty, but would seriously hinder usability.
- b-dizzle, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1Union's colors are nice, though I would hope they ditch that stupid icon thingy at the bottom for a real dockbar.
- Killerah, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I agree that Union needs more contrast, but I have to say that it looks much better than Gelatin (which I don't think is horrible). My main problem with Gelatin is that it's too big and toy like, the colors are nice and the transparency is good, but it just needs to be smaller.
- unexplainedmilk, on 01/02/2008, -5/+4I like it much better than the current orange & brown default we have now, especially the background picture.
What I don't get is why every new major version is always x.04... What's the point of that? Does it really make anyone think it's somehow more stable than if it was released as x.0?- crazybus24, on 01/02/2008, -0/+19.04 relates to the month it was released and the 8 relates the year. Ubuntu is released in 6 month cycles. 8.04 is the 4th month of the 8th year
- unexplainedmilk, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14Thank you for explaining; I never noticed that! :)

http://bayimg.com/caIbEAaBL - rpgmaker, on 01/02/2008, -2/+2Now we are talking, the previous all-brown one looked like *****.
PS: Now that they are creating so much theme proposals why don't they make a blue version of the default browny one, I know the brown is the default one, I just one a blue option of it installe by default, that isn't that hard.- Magnes, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1There is something called blubuntu or sth like that in repository. Try it.
- m0shen, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4that's what she said...
- Waterrat, on 01/02/2008, -7/+13 I like it as well.
- obsaysditto, on 01/02/2008, -23/+8looks good, but lets be serious... people are just going to customize it how they want it
- kettlechips, on 01/02/2008, -2/+39This is true for the hobbyist, but in the business world, for example, desktops will usually stay with the default themes.
- martalli, on 01/02/2008, -2/+20And reviews of new releases seem to harp on default schemes to no end. Ubuntu gets more grief for the brown than UPS.
- rappermas, on 01/02/2008, -2/+5I almost never change the OS defaults. Too much work and it all goes away if you manage to screw up your rc files.
- RockinRoel, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13It's all about the first impression...
- Neiby, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Which is one of the several reasons why KDE > Gnome.
- RockinRoel, on 01/16/2008, -0/+1KDE's first impression is horrible!
Gnome looks finished. KDE always looks like it's in alpha or something. Really sloppy.

- Neiby, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Which is one of the several reasons why KDE > Gnome.
- ours, on 01/02/2008, -1/+7So what? It's not because a certain number of people are going to customize it that they shouldn't make it nice out of the box.
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5I use the ubuntu theme on my Gentoo box :P. I happen to really like them.
- trenchfever, on 01/02/2008, -14/+80The transparency, gradients, wallpaper are all pleasing. But the orange is a bit too heavy IMHO. There isn't enough black to offset it.
- aaabatteries, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14aye.
can't put too much black in it however, or it'll look too autumn/halloween/pumpkin-ish.- mercurysquad, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1They forgot whites ... needs more white shades.
- estvir, on 01/02/2008, -3/+6There's other things wrong with it too:
- Gradient at the top is just too fuzzy, light, wrong colours, etc; in general it's a little off.
- Font choice is okay but some of the text has problems, like the menu listings at the top right should either be not as large or should not be bold, the clock text is just weird, etc.
- The orange on the grey gradients is off putting.
And so on.. it's easy for anyone with the slightest clue to create a 'nice looking theme' in Photoshop, but it's hard to have someone make a theme where all the little things are well designed which seems to be some of the major problems of FOSS software. Also, would it hurt to have a mockup in a higher-res?
It's not bad, but I expect better.- arjie, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8Hey, a more sensible place to put any constructive criticism would be on the wiki itself. More likely the artist will see it there.
- estvir, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3So, we can do that? I had no idea and didn't check it out but I'll do so now. Also, if they took their mockups to any half decent forum focusing on design they'd get a /ton/ of useful criticism, seriously.
Thanks.

- daliminator, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I think all it really needs is a darker shade of orange - the orange there is just too bright.
- EbilPhish, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1That orange doesn't go well with that shade of grey or the background.
I hope that whoever makes the themes, they enable the colour changing boxes in the themer. The Human theme doesn't but Human is just Clearlooks so if you want you can just change the colours on that.
- aaabatteries, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14aye.
- schestowitz, on 01/02/2008, -33/+14One word: gnome-look.org ;-)
People should be encouraged to customise, not accept defaults blindly. That's what free software is all about.- CATSCEO, on 01/02/2008, -2/+10The problem is that people DO accept defaults blindly. The regular windows switch isn't going to give a damn about the free software philosophy, all they want is a OS that looks good and works good the 1st time they use it.
- schestowitz, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1You might be right. People seem to strongly disagree, but my experience with users has been different (they change wallpapers and themes).
- tgoose, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13No, no, no! The defaults should be good enough and elegant enough that people *can* stick with them and feel happy. I'd certainly not expect corporate networks to go to any effort theming stuff, because it's much easier to use if everything looks the same. Beyond changing the desktop background I tend to leave defaults as much as possible apart from brief experiments.
- Chandon, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6Freedom means that you can customize, sane defaults mean that you usually don't have to. Freedom is more important, but the whole point of Ubuntu is that it gives you both.
- CATSCEO, on 01/02/2008, -2/+10The problem is that people DO accept defaults blindly. The regular windows switch isn't going to give a damn about the free software philosophy, all they want is a OS that looks good and works good the 1st time they use it.
- Jennica, on 01/02/2008, -10/+5I like the idea of a lime green [but no too overbearing] and a light gray.
- fliguy84, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0Use OpenSuse then
- popltree2, on 01/02/2008, -19/+19A better default than usual, but anyone who is actually using Linux is just going to customize their look anyway. Still, dugg.
- Nanobe, on 01/02/2008, -2/+20That's a flawed mentality, in my opinion. First impressions are extremely important when Average Joe is considering switching to a different OS. When I tried to get my mom switched from Windows to Ubuntu, the very first thing she said when we booted it up was, "No, this looks horrible. I want to go back to Windows." I had to do a bunch of theme and panel customization that she wouldn't know how to do before she was finally willing to give it a shot (and she ended up feeling that Linux was easier to use and better than Windows).
- cawpin, on 01/02/2008, -7/+2I hate to say it, but your mom was just being ignorant or you didn't explain the reasons for switching to Linux very well. I'm betting on the latter.
- samthurston, on 01/02/2008, -1/+8Believe it or not, not everyone chooses their operating system based on ideals. Some of us just need to get ***** done. Just because someone hasn't been converted to the F/OSS religion, should they stay with windows?
"your mom is ignorant"? classy.

- MozillaFirefox, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Hmm, I think the Ubuntu theme is 1000 times better than the Windows theme, Vista or XP. Anyways, the orange doesn't fit.
- Killerah, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I definitely agree, "people will change it anyway" is no excuse for having an ugly theme ship with your OS.
- MattBD, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I do think you're right. The number of times I've heard people complaining about Ubuntu being brown. Never mind that almost everyone changes their wallpaper - I mean, who sticks with the default wallpaper on Windows?
I think the best theme currently available in Ubuntu is Blubuntu.
- cawpin, on 01/02/2008, -7/+2I hate to say it, but your mom was just being ignorant or you didn't explain the reasons for switching to Linux very well. I'm betting on the latter.

- TheRealToma, on 01/02/2008, -2/+50Ive been enjoying this theme more than the other stuff on the ubuntu-art mailing list. Dugg for calling it a proposal and not the 'new default' theme as some of the other folks have been doing!
- HHP2K, on 01/02/2008, -0/+46The comment about the transparency on that page is spot-on: it's nice that transparency is being used where it is functional. That gives it a much more intelligent feel. Other things about this theme definitely need to be refined, but all in all it's not nearly as disappointing as the other proposed themes that are practically all-black.
By the way guys, as of writing this comment three people have noted that this isn't worth anything because a user will simply customize it their own way. True as that may be, you need to start somewhere, you need to give a face to a name. Part of what makes Ubuntu's releases so exciting is the fresh feeling that each one has, and these developments are primarily why.- solonGFX, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1I would have preferred a bit more transparency, perhaps just *slightly* with the applications menu and tooltips.
- benguild, on 01/02/2008, -14/+4Meh, it's okay. I prefer the old one though. Rounded corners on interfaces like this just suck.
- Skwerl, on 01/02/2008, -6/+3LoL, the Ubuntu fanboys are out in force. You're not allowed to have an opinion unless it's the same as theirs.
- Colesif, on 01/02/2008, -3/+26Not bad, but I think they can do better.
- haloddr, on 01/02/2008, -25/+27I recently upgraded to ubuntu from vista...got sick of waiting for SP1
- ours, on 01/02/2008, -9/+4I prefer my Ubuntu for just about anything but my games-only install of Vista is happy with SP1 RC1. Congratulations on the switch :-).
- MWeather, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1My ubuntu games install runs better than my vista games install. And that's with the same games. Maybe I should give the beta SP1 a shot. Or just format it.
- rootneg2, on 01/02/2008, -2/+23congrats on switching to linux; but what does this have to do with the theme?

- morphie, on 01/02/2008, -0/+17If those fonts could become the default... that would be a major leap.
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2My roomate was telling me a week ago or so that lots of microsoft fonts have been made open or something. Assuming this is true, it wouldent suprise me if the next ubuntu had good looking fonts by default.
- cawpin, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Most of the MS fonts are available now in the Ubuntu repositories and have been for some time.
- MWeather, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Technically, the fonts themselves are not in the repository, just the downloader for the fonts.
- bejayel, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Yes but before now you needed a Windows License in order to use the fonts. I was say that they are apparently free now.
- MWeather, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1They've been free for 12 years.
- morphie, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I actually meant the rendering of the fonts, not the font type used. :)

meh, it was a quote (and not quite as funny as i thought at the time; i was sleep deprived...), "ma'am" just doesn't sound right. And, besides, "sir" /can/ refer to both genders (don't get me started on gender neutral addresses/titles...)

I have to admit that it looks nice, though.
Call it Gasoline or something :)- ungamedplayer, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4What !

- triskele, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8You'll have to wait for the "Agar" theme then. You and my girlfriend.
- MozillaFirefox, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2It's just toenails. Geez. And besides, you could just change the name if you don't like it. Or re brand it like Debian did with Firefox.

- mapez, on 01/02/2008, -1/+15Most of the other themes that have hit the home page look awful in comparison to this. I really hope Ubuntu takes on a lighter swatch than the browns and blacks that the community saw earlier.

i especially like 2 points:
1) the manner in with the menu blends/extends from the activator; this definitely helps to improve usability. (where "Applications" has no border/boundary between itself and it's menu) It would be nice to see this effect extend to the next menu-level down so that (in this picture) "graphics" would likewise blend/extend into it's sub-menu.
2) a similar blending/boundaryless effect between the window title and the window body for the background window; especially with the transparency extended into the window body.
I don't mess around with gtk themes too much (i'm actually more minimalist fvwm/wmii/ratpoison/ion (if only Tuomo would stop being a dick about licensing...) fan myself, but i digress) so I'm not sure what all is part of the theme, or some new compiz component or what-have-you.
I do wish they had a transparent terminal in the shot though (preferably white on black). I use the terminal *alot* and it's nice when it looks just as snazzy and integrated as the rest of the desktop. - chetanthaker, on 01/02/2008, -4/+21Does it always HAVE to be orange ??
- CATSCEO, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13Yes.
- lispy, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13Actually brown is allowed too.
- parkermauney, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Brown is a dark shade of orange.
- MWeather, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5No, orange is a light shade of brown.
- crazybrit, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1I think you mean tint.
Then again I haven't taken an art class in 3 years, but yeah.
- parkermauney, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Brown is a dark shade of orange.
- Jugalator, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5It's kind of their brand identity so I wouldn't expect much change. And I don't really see the problem with orange. At least it's not the shade of semi-light-blue that bore a brain out of its cranium.
- syphern, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Dude who made it is from Africa dude so let him capture that amazing orange African sunset...

- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Seriously, if you're a newcomer to linux, don't start with Arch or Gentoo. They are great distros (Arch is one of my favs), but are in no way beginner friendly. Start with Ubuntu, Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS, and get comfortable and learn about Linux, and after a while if you feel like being more adventurous, give Arch a whirl.
- Neiby, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1+1 for PCLinuxOS. Very nice distribution.

Start with Ubuntu, Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS, and get comfortable and learn about Linux, and after a while if you feel like being more adventurous, give Arch a whirl.
- MWeather, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Gentoo? Too much automatic crap. Real men use Linux From Scratch.
- Ramble, on 01/02/2008, -8/+1All those are crap. Try Gentoo or Arch Linux.
- Jennica, on 01/02/2008, -2/+13What else would be holding you back?
- elithrar, on 01/02/2008, -1/+11Transparency for the inactive windows is a brilliant idea and isn't overbearing. Transparency has its' place, and it's not all over your UI. It's also refreshing to see a 'light' theme - I'm not a fan of the dark/black themes whatsoever.
- laterthandawn, on 01/02/2008, -10/+2Does Ubuntu 7.10 have spell check?
...cheap shot.- Hyuuu, on 01/02/2008, -5/+0No, You are Quite wrong if i may say so myself..
- andycr512, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Uh, yes?
- om3ganet, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13My personal opinion of it:
- Menus look cool, rounded corners there are nice
- Lose the rounded corners on windows
- Bar at the top seems too big, toy-like
- Task list at bottom has too much spacing around the items in it (too big like the top bar)
- Background image is too busy, should be cleaner and smoother
- Quite a bit of orange; at least it's not brown
- Gradients on top and bottom bar seem a bit dark
Other than these issues, I'd use it! - greatcaffeine, on 01/02/2008, -4/+1That would be a great default theme. Obviously most people are going to customize it, but I'd actually consider using that instead of just changing everything right away.
- Ademan, on 01/02/2008, -1/+10Not a big fan of this theme, but it's great to see more ideas being proposed. < / broken record > (I'm pretty sure I say something to this effect every time a new theme proposal is on digg, but meh)
(to me) this theme seems a bit cheap, childish too, it doesn't strike me as the face of a product that will make new users take it seriously, instead it reminds me of the UI of some low end peripheral's configuration program.
If I had to offer my critique I like the buttons actually, but the highlight in the menus and the "x" button on the window theme both make me dislike it, along with the super wide spacing between menu items (in the menu, not on the menubar, i rather like the menubar)
I think the part about the menu spacing that bugs me so much is the wasted space between the text, if the text was bigger so that it utilized that extra space, or the icons were smaller so that each menu item took up less space, i think it would look a lot better to me.- koko775, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5What you call the 'face of a product that will make new users take it seriously' I call a face of a product that will make my mom take it too seriously to overcome her fears of using a new system. This is a person that took six months to even try OS X after we bought her a mac, and a year later, even though she likes it a lot more than Windows, is afraid to try new things.
IMO, this interface would be great for her, and anyone serious enough to switch on features and not be intimidated can change the team easily.

- pioni, on 01/02/2008, -10/+2Fugly, IMHO...
- froggiestone, on 01/02/2008, -0/+21Well the theme is not that bad really, but The biggest problem with the whole interface, is that everything is extremely huge, buttons spacing and so on, i guess its the nature of gnome.
i ran at 1680x1050 and it felt like i was running 1024x768.- Ademan, on 01/02/2008, -0/+9It's not really the nature of GNOME but rather the nature of Gtk+'s box layouts, but the theme also has a certain amount of control over this, take the clearlooks compact theme: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Clearlooks+ ... (although the screenshots hardly do it justice) it really is compact and rather nice, i've been using it for a few days now
- Niomi, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2This is a great theme, thank you for the link. :)
- oobuntu, on 01/02/2008, -2/+8@froggie - i agree, huge boxes, icons and whitespace make the interface look too kiddie, something i'd expect on OLPC. that would be KDE you want instead

- elbonito665, on 01/02/2008, -3/+4i like it. implement that and I'd surely make a switch. ;)
- shawnanigans, on 01/02/2008, -14/+5May I suggest changing the theme to KDE 4.
- ioannusdeverani, on 01/02/2008, -1/+6Wow. I am going to pretend I did not read that.
- CATSCEO, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8Never heard of Kubuntu I take it?
- Purin, on 01/02/2008, -3/+1That's what I did, and I am glad I made the switch.
- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1KDE 4 looks amazing.
- kwilliam, on 01/02/2008, -1/+0Gah! Why do pro-KDE comments always get dugg down? Why aren't their more KDE users on Digg supporting KDE? Wait a minute...... it makes sense now. They're probably reading Slashdot.
- ohplzstfu, on 01/02/2008, -2/+2I really like the concept, especially fonts. Boy, some other ideas on that wiki were horrible. I hope this isn't the only pool the themes are selected from.
- shankarganesh, on 01/02/2008, -1/+17Can I download it to use in my current Ubuntu Installation?
- Rowan187, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I find it wonderful. A redesign like that is definitely something Ubuntu needs to catch the attention of new users. I myself love the default Gnome themes and find Gnome itself highly customizable and simple, but I wouldn't mind if things were changed around like that if it would attract new users to the Open Source Community.
- ioannusdeverani, on 01/02/2008, -6/+2The buttons look like they were ripped from Oxygen (KDE)
- Karmavs, on 01/02/2008, -3/+2The fonts are a linear gradient with a grey border. Hardly an imaginative idea.
- ariez84, on 01/02/2008, -0/+5Maybe making a repository of themes? I think that would be perfect.
- KloroFormd, on 01/02/2008, -2/+0Downloading and importing is too hard?
- Ademan, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1It's harder than it really should be... I'm still disgusted that the default "install theme" functionality is so brittle, it breaks if things aren't quite where it wants them (and not everyone packages their stuff the same so it can cause valid themes not to be installed) or sometimes artists package multiple themes in the same tarball, and the installer will only install one of them, i don't get why... At it's simplest all you need to do is unpack the tarball, loop through the directories inside the tarball, look for a gtkrc file, and then move gtkrc and it's two parent directories into either ~/.themes or /usr/share/themes
(and yeah i'm considering writing a patch, or better yet a command line tool to do it so that it can just be called from the GUI installer)

- DeathAxe, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2You mean like Gnome Look? http://www.gnome-look.org/
- KloroFormd, on 01/02/2008, -2/+0Downloading and importing is too hard?
- Mortiferous, on 01/02/2008, -4/+2I can't figure out what people like in all the ubuntu themes. Spend 5 seconds at gnome-look.org and you'll see that there are much more impressive themes that deserve more attention. I've never stuck with the default theme on my installs.
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -1/+6Most of the gnome-look.org themes are crap, and half of the decent looking ones are incomplete.
- arbulus, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2True, most people don't stick with defaults, but first impressions are important, so you want the default theme to be appealing and attractive to new users.
- skimmas, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2IMHO the orange is way to bright and saturated and the wallpaper while being a very nice photograph seems to have to much information and that might just add those little annoying milliseconds it takes to distinguish the application window from the background.
- japface, on 01/02/2008, -8/+19http://www.portefolje.net/div/mockup.jpg this one is much nicer. much classier
- kettlechips, on 01/02/2008, -5/+17Yeah, if you're an oily haired old man in a leisure suit with jewelery and a gold tooth.
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8Change the background image and i prefer that one too actually
- Karmavs, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7It's trying too hard to look classy. It doesn't - and it would be terrible to use too.
Though, It would fit in well with this over-the-top laptop - http://www.computer-choppers.com/gallery/gmbp/GMBP ... - aussieNickuss, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2That look really nice.
- eool, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0That's really looks nice :-p I am a fedora user, maybe i will try ubuntu :)
- japface, on 01/02/2008, -11/+2http://www.portefolje.net/div/mockup.jpg this one is much classier.
- HonoredMule, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Sure, if by classy, you mean a 49 yr old redneck in lingerie, sipping champagne on a leopard-print couch.
- Langford, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3Not bad looking, though I still think I prefer the theme I currently have.
- Karmavs, on 01/02/2008, -1/+10I don't like the movement away from brown (bright orange & light grey, with no counter-balancing colours - looks a little too playful & childish to me) - but it seems I'm in the minority. This theme is certainly better than the last theme that popped up on digg (http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2007/12/20/new-ubuntu-mo ... - though it kind of reminds me of Yahoo Messenger for XP - http://www.shareware.ir/Scr/YahooMessenger2.jpg. My main complaints about would be:
1. Everything is huge - particularly the bars at the top and bottom, the menu header text, and the close button's icon.
2. the title bar isn't bordered consistently. The sides & bottom of the window have a dark grey border around them - while the title bar has a bright orange one. Especially when combined with the shadow effects, this creates the jarring effect that the title bar expands wider than the window. The edges of the title bar should be the same brightness as the edges of the window, or darker.
3. White on orange. The font in the menus and on the task bar looks bad against the bright orange background. This could probably be solved by making these items bold, which would also serve to further emphasise them; or by making the text black.
4. Transparent inactive windows. I used to think this was a good idea; then I actually tried it. It doesn't help differentiate windows as well as other methods do (like shadows) , and it makes it difficult to read their content. I would love to see a theme in which the window background became transparent, but not the content areas & interface widgets…
5. Too little differentiation of default buttons. This is one place where I pretty much suggest copying apple (the glow is already kind-of copying their method of showing active controls, so…) make the default button orange.
6. gnome bars are too dark. At first this would seem to be easily fixed - but, the obvious solution of just making the bars brighter overlooks one thing. The menus. Currently, a selected menu header is shown in the same colour as the menu. This looks great - but if the bars are lightened to be the same shade as the menus, would be far less so. I personally would suggest 'transparent' bars - kind of. they should take the average colour of the whole desktop wallpaper, lower the contrast & saturation a little, and then use that colour as the base. That would resolve the issues people have with transparency in one similar use case (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gruber/1938205095/) whilst preserving the good things about the effect.
If this theme, or one like it, became the default, the default wallpaper should be something much darker than the one in this concept - one similar to the one shown here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ... - dakuneko, on 01/02/2008, -3/+1I heard from somewhere..."Orange is the new pink."
Seriously, I like the theme. Simple yet beautiful. - tobyadams, on 01/02/2008, -7/+1oh my god this is beautiful!!!!
- zeuux, on 01/02/2008, -4/+0seems good.
- KyleKruchok, on 01/02/2008, -7/+1All in favor, can I get an "aye"?
- srg13, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11It's quite nice, but everything's a bit too big...
- reazal, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Yes that's true especially for those who use 1024x768 screen resolution. That's why I disable the top panel.
- PricklySponge, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11Mirror?
- a0peter, on 01/02/2008, -0/+9Anyone got the picture before imageshack murdered it?
- CrudeDarkness, on 01/02/2008, -0/+19wow. I really Digg the yellow frog theme.
- MrViklund, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Well nice. But please, change the name. It disgusting!
