- niallabrown, on 01/02/2008, -15/+133I really like this. It's sutble, soft and really inviting.
- trenchfever, on 01/02/2008, -14/+80The transparency, gradients, wallpaper are all pleasing. But the orange is a bit too heavy IMHO. There isn't enough black to offset it.
- TheRealToma, on 01/02/2008, -2/+50Ive been enjoying this theme more than the other stuff on the ubuntu-art mailing list. Dugg for calling it a proposal and not the 'new default' theme as some of the other folks have been doing!
- HHP2K, on 01/02/2008, -0/+46The comment about the transparency on that page is spot-on: it's nice that transparency is being used where it is functional. That gives it a much more intelligent feel. Other things about this theme definitely need to be refined, but all in all it's not nearly as disappointing as the other proposed themes that are practically all-black.
By the way guys, as of writing this comment three people have noted that this isn't worth anything because a user will simply customize it their own way. True as that may be, you need to start somewhere, you need to give a face to a name. Part of what makes Ubuntu's releases so exciting is the fresh feeling that each one has, and these developments are primarily why. - kettlechips, on 01/02/2008, -2/+39This is true for the hobbyist, but in the business world, for example, desktops will usually stay with the default themes.
- snuffulupagus, on 01/02/2008, -2/+31but I'm vegan :(

- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -2/+23congrats on switching to linux; but what does this have to do with the theme?
- froggiestone, on 01/02/2008, -0/+21Well the theme is not that bad really, but The biggest problem with the whole interface, is that everything is extremely huge, buttons spacing and so on, i guess its the nature of gnome.
i ran at 1680x1050 and it felt like i was running 1024x768. - inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+19wow. I really Digg the yellow frog theme.
- crazybus24, on 01/02/2008, -0/+19.04 relates to the month it was released and the 8 relates the year. Ubuntu is released in 6 month cycles. 8.04 is the 4th month of the 8th year
- martalli, on 01/02/2008, -2/+20And reviews of new releases seem to harp on default schemes to no end. Ubuntu gets more grief for the brown than UPS.
- Nanobe, on 01/02/2008, -2/+20That's a flawed mentality, in my opinion. First impressions are extremely important when Average Joe is considering switching to a different OS. When I tried to get my mom switched from Windows to Ubuntu, the very first thing she said when we booted it up was, "No, this looks horrible. I want to go back to Windows." I had to do a bunch of theme and panel customization that she wouldn't know how to do before she was finally willing to give it a shot (and she ended up feeling that Linux was easier to use and better than Windows).
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+18There is always the english version...
- morphie, on 01/02/2008, -0/+17If those fonts could become the default... that would be a major leap.
- chetanthaker, on 01/02/2008, -4/+21Does it always HAVE to be orange ??
- Onestone, on 01/02/2008, -8/+25Also, be sure to check Union, another excellent Hardy theme proposal:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ... - shankarganesh, on 01/02/2008, -1/+17Can I download it to use in my current Ubuntu Installation?
- incd, on 04/18/2008, -2/+17Why does the little fellow insult my microphone?
- mapez, on 01/02/2008, -1/+15Most of the other themes that have hit the home page look awful in comparison to this. I really hope Ubuntu takes on a lighter swatch than the browns and blacks that the community saw earlier.
- avatarpalin, on 01/02/2008, -0/+14subtle smooth.... and yet uncontrollable.... The kind of creature that can be so precious yet tear your heart asunder....
- spoulson, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13I agree that Union needs more contrast, but otherwise it looks very sharp!
- unexplainedmilk, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14Thank you for explaining; I never noticed that! :)
- Onestone, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13How is the official Ubuntu Artwork Wiki blogspam?
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+13No, no, no! The defaults should be good enough and elegant enough that people *can* stick with them and feel happy. I'd certainly not expect corporate networks to go to any effort theming stuff, because it's much easier to use if everything looks the same. Beyond changing the desktop background I tend to leave defaults as much as possible apart from brief experiments.
- aaabatteries, on 01/02/2008, -1/+14aye.
can't put too much black in it however, or it'll look too autumn/halloween/pumpkin-ish. - kettlechips, on 01/02/2008, -5/+17Yeah, if you're an oily haired old man in a leisure suit with jewelery and a gold tooth.
- om3ganet, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13My personal opinion of it:
- Menus look cool, rounded corners there are nice
- Lose the rounded corners on windows
- Bar at the top seems too big, toy-like
- Task list at bottom has too much spacing around the items in it (too big like the top bar)
- Background image is too busy, should be cleaner and smoother
- Quite a bit of orange; at least it's not brown
- Gradients on top and bottom bar seem a bit dark
Other than these issues, I'd use it! - RockinRoel, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13It's all about the first impression...
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13Yes.
- lispy, on 01/02/2008, -1/+13Actually brown is allowed too.
- PricklySponge, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11Mirror?
- Jennica, on 01/02/2008, -2/+13What else would be holding you back?
There are a million better reasons to get Linux. - japface, on 01/02/2008, -8/+19http://www.portefolje.net/div/mockup.jpg this one is much nicer. much classier
- srg13, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11It's quite nice, but everything's a bit too big...
- British0zzy, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11gasoline!?!? are you kidding me? you would name it after dead dinosaurs?
someone is being insensitive to our dinosaur brethren. - DocHoliday22, on 01/02/2008, -3/+13Much better than the older themes, but still needs work.
- Outdoor83, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10Top-posting a mirror as I had to dig like 70 comments down for it...
http://bayimg.com/caIbEAaBL - elithrar, on 01/02/2008, -1/+11Transparency for the inactive windows is a brilliant idea and isn't overbearing. Transparency has its' place, and it's not all over your UI. It's also refreshing to see a 'light' theme - I'm not a fan of the dark/black themes whatsoever.
- jasz, on 01/02/2008, -0/+10I liked Union better... Gelatin seems kinda dull...
- Karmavs, on 01/02/2008, -1/+10I don't like the movement away from brown (bright orange & light grey, with no counter-balancing colours - looks a little too playful & childish to me) - but it seems I'm in the minority. This theme is certainly better than the last theme that popped up on digg (http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2007/12/20/new-ubuntu-mo ... - though it kind of reminds me of Yahoo Messenger for XP - http://www.shareware.ir/Scr/YahooMessenger2.jpg. My main complaints about would be:
1. Everything is huge - particularly the bars at the top and bottom, the menu header text, and the close button's icon.
2. the title bar isn't bordered consistently. The sides & bottom of the window have a dark grey border around them - while the title bar has a bright orange one. Especially when combined with the shadow effects, this creates the jarring effect that the title bar expands wider than the window. The edges of the title bar should be the same brightness as the edges of the window, or darker.
3. White on orange. The font in the menus and on the task bar looks bad against the bright orange background. This could probably be solved by making these items bold, which would also serve to further emphasise them; or by making the text black.
4. Transparent inactive windows. I used to think this was a good idea; then I actually tried it. It doesn't help differentiate windows as well as other methods do (like shadows) , and it makes it difficult to read their content. I would love to see a theme in which the window background became transparent, but not the content areas & interface widgets…
5. Too little differentiation of default buttons. This is one place where I pretty much suggest copying apple (the glow is already kind-of copying their method of showing active controls, so…) make the default button orange.
6. gnome bars are too dark. At first this would seem to be easily fixed - but, the obvious solution of just making the bars brighter overlooks one thing. The menus. Currently, a selected menu header is shown in the same colour as the menu. This looks great - but if the bars are lightened to be the same shade as the menus, would be far less so. I personally would suggest 'transparent' bars - kind of. they should take the average colour of the whole desktop wallpaper, lower the contrast & saturation a little, and then use that colour as the base. That would resolve the issues people have with transparency in one similar use case (http://www.flickr.com/photos/gruber/1938205095/) whilst preserving the good things about the effect.
If this theme, or one like it, became the default, the default wallpaper should be something much darker than the one in this concept - one similar to the one shown here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alt ... - Ademan, on 01/02/2008, -0/+9It's not really the nature of GNOME but rather the nature of Gtk+'s box layouts, but the theme also has a certain amount of control over this, take the clearlooks compact theme: http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Clearlooks+ ... (although the screenshots hardly do it justice) it really is compact and rather nice, i've been using it for a few days now
- Ademan, on 01/02/2008, -1/+10Not a big fan of this theme, but it's great to see more ideas being proposed. < / broken record > (I'm pretty sure I say something to this effect every time a new theme proposal is on digg, but meh)
(to me) this theme seems a bit cheap, childish too, it doesn't strike me as the face of a product that will make new users take it seriously, instead it reminds me of the UI of some low end peripheral's configuration program.
If I had to offer my critique I like the buttons actually, but the highlight in the menus and the "x" button on the window theme both make me dislike it, along with the super wide spacing between menu items (in the menu, not on the menubar, i rather like the menubar)
I think the part about the menu spacing that bugs me so much is the wasted space between the text, if the text was bigger so that it utilized that extra space, or the icons were smaller so that each menu item took up less space, i think it would look a lot better to me. - a0peter, on 01/02/2008, -0/+9Anyone got the picture before imageshack murdered it?
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8Change the background image and i prefer that one too actually
- triskele, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8You'll have to wait for the "Agar" theme then. You and my girlfriend.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -2/+10The problem is that people DO accept defaults blindly. The regular windows switch isn't going to give a damn about the free software philosophy, all they want is a OS that looks good and works good the 1st time they use it.
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8Never heard of Kubuntu I take it?
- bejayel, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7For some strange reason, the rounded edge staying there when the window is maximized drive me friggin nuts. Overall, i do have more of an appreciation for this theme than the others that i have seen thus far.
