- WiseWeasel, on 04/14/2008, -15/+65Hope they're working on a Windows Runtime for Linux™ product... There's still a huge amount of value in their APIs, programming tools, documentation and support infrastructure, it's just their base OS that's crap.
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -31/+80oh shut up...just about everytime microsoft stock drops .005% some linux or mac techy posts a blog about the impending doom of microsoft. no doors are opening for linux. firefox cant even get a solid majority of the browser market, and thats an easier market to break in to.
Face the fact that the majority of PC users are MORONS and they DONT know what linux is. They just want things to work right out of the box and they don't want to go on forums to try to get flash, wifi, their soundcard working, or to find out how to sudo apt-get libdvdcss so they can watch a stupid dvd for stupid people. linux doesnt have the drivers, it doesnt have a mainstream backing beacuse there is no money in it. its a utopian idea and we live in a cutthroat sleazy capitalistic society run by cheney and bill gates on one side and hu jintao on the other. - Farmer77, on 04/14/2008, -2/+45For those who don't know, what kajoob said is a running gag like Duke Nukem Forever.
- shadoweva09, on 04/14/2008, -5/+45A. That would be Wine, the mono project, ReactOS, SAMBA etc...
B. The NT kernel is actually great, it's just with vista they loaded it down with way too much crap. Load ReactOS up in an emulator and see how fast the kernel is without all the extra crap added. (everything from windows 2000 on was based on NT, and it looks like whatever comes next will also be based on it.) - estvir, on 04/14/2008, -15/+50You know, it sure would 'open doors for Linux' (How many times have we heard that?) if the analyst wasn't a complete moron.

But hey, continue on in your own little reality. - inactive, on 04/14/2008, -1/+28did you actually read what i wrote?
- yetAnotherCroc, on 04/14/2008, -4/+26well you can block the linux and apple section. The fox news one...well you could allways try not using Digg
- kajoob, on 04/14/2008, -19/+35This truly is the year of linux.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 04/14/2008, -3/+18To be honest ME tanked quite spectacularly. I never actually ran it (And I had every MS OS up to that point) In fact history is actively trying to repress the memory of it:P
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -8/+23Lol the first link is must read. Mary Jo Foley (Microsoft hater extraordinary) thinks Gartner is bat-***** crazy.
If anything it appears that the Microsoft hating blog'o'sphere is collapsing under its own weight. They are now in an arms race to make the most wild eyed and sensational criticisms as link bait for a diminishing add revenues, because their predictions about Vista were more wrong than Donald Rumsfelds predictions about the location of the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. - WinterWolf33, on 04/14/2008, -5/+19I don't think being "monolithic" is a problem...but it shouldn't be an excuse for poor security and stability.
- theaceoffire, on 04/14/2008, -3/+17A. While I don't agree that Wine is unusable in most cases, I strongly agree that MS could do it better... but they desperately want to avoid this so that everyone will HAVE to use their expensive OS to use legacy programs.
B. The issue isn't that MS will WANT to target it, it is that in the process of locking all the users into their system they have locked THEMSELVES into the same system.
If they do anything TOO different, all old programs break, and then old programs won't work on ANY new OS. Legacy programs/games/etc are a major reaason why people OWN microsoft OS's, so why spend $500 if you can get a great OS for free? - krewl, on 04/14/2008, -1/+14Linux may have to wait until next year, this is already "The year of bitching about Vista"
- Aleman360, on 04/14/2008, -2/+14Going forward, virtualization is the solution to the backwards compatibility problem, isn't it?
- wolferz, on 04/14/2008, -3/+15Funny the same thing works on windows xp, and vista, and 2000, and me... what's your point?
The software isn't needed to be able to type or use the mouse, the software is needed to control programmable keys and mouse features. My Logitech G7 is an 80 dollar 3 button mouse on Linux. It's a 80 dollar 8 programmable button mouse with 2000 dpi precision and the ability to switch dpi settings for fine tuned control from within games and other apps.... under Windows. The difference is there is no working Linux software to control the more advanced features. - theWrkncacnter, on 04/14/2008, -2/+14you could go to a social news site that's not about technology news
- HoratioHellpop, on 04/14/2008, -5/+17Funny ... i did the same thing last month. Using Vista.
- CC440, on 04/14/2008, -5/+16Vista has issues, but all Linux realeases have huge issues that will prevent them from beoming commonplace with the average user in the next few years. I have a Lenovo T60P which is a very common best-seller business laptop, and when I had a professional IT department attempt tp install Ubuntu my ATI card refused to work (no drivers), no bluetooth (no drivers), there is about 1/2 the options for desktop customization, compiz fusion is nice but doesn't play well with ATI, and overall the whole appearance and implementation felt like it was a free OS, not a polished and ready product. I'm sorry but Linux has a really long way to go before it can be acepted, most of this is due to companies no providing drivers, but it's still a huge issue.
- ennTOXX, on 04/14/2008, -2/+13Is there a way to bury everything you don't agree with or have interest in?... :||
- whereiseljefe, on 04/14/2008, -1/+12He's making a reference to Linux's kernel architecture, but even from that standpoint windows still wins the monolithic debate.
- mrsteveman1, on 04/14/2008, -0/+9The NT kernel is fine as far as i know, its the way services run, the security architecture, and the way they implement the APIs that cause problems.
Perfect point, if Microsoft would quit trying to use everything they make as a way to prop up windows, they would probably do well. They would have more resources, less to worry about, and a larger user base into the future.
They aren't going to do that, because someone at Microsoft is ***** retarded and is pushing them to expand endlessly into every market, just to prop up Windows.
BTW, Windows has had a POSIX environment since windows 2000. - inactive, on 04/14/2008, -13/+22How many of these ***** articles are going to be posted?
And in 5 years from now when Microsoft is doing just as good as always in the OS market, none of you will have the integiry to admit how ***** stupid you all were these past few days with all this wishful thinking crap.
Howdo I know? Because 5 years AGO you were all saying the same thing. According to idiots like you, Linux and OS should have at least 25% market share each by now. - xutopia, on 04/14/2008, -2/+11How could that be? We all know that Linux users don't have sex!
- jasmus, on 04/14/2008, -3/+12I bought a typewriter the other day... you see where I'm going.
- iofthestorm, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9Nah, that was last year, this year is turning into more of "People who have actually used Vista bitching about fanboys bitching about Vista."
- mrsteveman1, on 04/14/2008, -1/+9XP home, XP embedded, and WS2003 were all completely separate, in fact i know 2 of those were separate code bases.
Vista and WS2008 are the same code base, but i don't see MS having to limit one because of the other at all. - AlvesLopes, on 04/14/2008, -4/+12Same.
#1 this was written by a guy that thinks computers were invented so people could surf the web and meet chicks and watch porn
#2 Windows 7 will take at least 3y to arrive, does he really think manufacturers will wait 3 more years??
#3 Linux, Linux, Linux. Just another fanboy. If not Windows, why not Mac? Seriously, that just shows he is compleatly biased - pilobilus, on 04/14/2008, -2/+9I do cheerlead against Micro$oft most every chance I get, but I do not expect them to fall over, or Linux to gain anything like their kind of market share, any time soon. But guess what? Linux does not need massive commercial market share, it only needs enough user base to assure a healthy developer community, and decent support from hardware vendors. Progress has been excellent, and all we need for the OS to hit "mainstream commercial quality and convenience" is about another 1% of Microsoft's current user base to switch. (Psst! Wanna rock stable high performance operating system that comes with thousands of dollars worth of free software?)
- DarkShroud, on 04/14/2008, -17/+24Another stupid article from someone who is clueless about the real world. Vista is far more secure than XP. Every time MS beefs up security tons of people complain about it. Remember when SP2 was introduced for XP, the firewall and a few of the other security patches being fixed raised hell from people & companies. It's a never ending cycle every time something new comes out.
I'm not even going to talk about Linux.
Buried as lame. - oshu, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8"Isnt [sic] Linux (and every other OS) becoming more complex by the minute?"
I guess it all depends on what you mean by complex. Newer versions of linux distros generally run faster on the same hardware (new versions of Gnome and KDE are always improving speed).
"Doesn't Linux support 20-yr-old applications?"
Yes, but as these applications are generally open source, we just recompile, patch, or do whatever else is needed to keep a popular app supported. It isn't as if people are trying to install ancient binaries on modern linux systems.
"Weren't there massive headaches involved in moving to a new source control system for Linux because of the complexity?"
Any such issues were faced by the core kernel developers, not the community at large.
"Hasn't there been loud rumblings in the kernel development community about how desired new features get prioritized?"
Sure, but the beauty of open source is that people can and do customize the kernel to their own liking. The kernel released by kernel.org is just the starting point for most distros.
It is the entire ecosystem of proprietary closed source software combined with a poor structural design. that is making Windows a giant creaking mess. It is a interesting problem for MS. The market freaks out if their new version of Windows doesn't support the applications written for the previous version. This ties MS into supporting poor design derisions from old Windows versions for far too long. I have no doubt that if they could truly start from scratch, they could make an OS that is 100 times better then Windows Vista in terms of security, stability, and speed (even on older hardware), but they can't and that is their curse. - invinciblechunk, on 04/14/2008, -1/+8Supporting 20 years' worth of applications is the reason Windows is still doing well.
- atdigg, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Every year when Linux gains users is the year of Linux
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6I dont think it's fair to call people who havnt been exposed to linux morons. If anything you are all lazy because you dont spread the word enough.
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -4/+10This is so 2 days ago.
- schnikies79, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6If it is software only. It doesn't work too well when the software directly communicates with external hardware or a pci/isa/whatever card.
- HoratioHellpop, on 04/14/2008, -2/+8You're comparing a $40-50 billion dollar company with software that runs on 75-80% of the worlds desktop and server computers to a video game company.
Brilliant. - iplayyouandme, on 04/14/2008, -4/+10Did Gartner even mention Linux? No. They did mention OS X and the iPhone.
Windows is 'collapsing,' Gartner analysts warn
"Apple introduced its iPhone running OS X, but Microsoft requires a different product on handhelds because Windows Vista is too large, which makes application development, support and the user experience all more difficult," according to Silver and MacDonald.

The true threat...
Apple's OS Edge Is a Threat to Microsoft
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr ...
Linux is a great OS fore sure. But it's lacks the easy of use that consumers crave and the mainstream support of mission critical software titles for many industries. Linux is great for geeks and business with big IT departments who want to deploy a server, but again, it's still a no-go for consumers and as a business desktop. - Zargon, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6Gartner is sooooooo full of it and has been for years. I used to hear how they were respected and intelligent but trust me, they are not!
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6***** all you guys, I bought a ti-83 calculator and never looked back.
- afx1, on 04/14/2008, -1/+7which one gave me herpes?
- BOFH2, on 04/14/2008, -0/+6OS2 Warp
- carpespasm, on 04/14/2008, -2/+7you could make a case for that in that there's a history of 10+ years of old software to keep running, but it's also much easier to trim back a linux system since it's much much much more modular than windows has ever been. When you need to run old software you don't have to build a runtime emulator layer then pile it onto the new layer you'd like to run things on, you just run them in parallel so both can do what they need to.
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -3/+8and windows is responsible for your colon cancer
- inactive, on 04/14/2008, -10/+15piss poor flamebait attempt ?. If so it wont work, every who is everyone knows that on good authority that windows users spend all their time setting up their distro and cant play most the latest games without dualbooting to linux.
- Meatshield, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6Trolltech's QT Designer is cross platform and WYSIWYG, making it very easy to use. I use the Linux version with no problems whatsoever.
And if you're referring to Visual Studio, try NetBeans. VERY similar to VS. - scy1192, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5those discs are loaded with crapware and drivers for 95/98
- noseeme, on 04/14/2008, -0/+5That's funny, because Linux is the classic example of a monolithic kernel (although it obviously works quite well!)
- Khast, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6Not to be a pain. But not everyone can afford to buy all new hardware just to keep up to standards. In the good old days, you installed the OS and GUI....everything else was just an *option* Why can't it go back. I don't see the necessity of installing every god damned option in the OS, if I am never going to use it.
Automatically install:
OS
GUI
Basic tools/utilities
Option to install:
games
GUI effects
Misc programs
Demo *****
anything else not mentioned - KevinJim, on 04/14/2008, -1/+6I'm a Linux user. I'm very happy with what I have and I also know that Microsoft isn't going to be destroyed by Linux. Linux is an OS, Microsoft is a company... Microsoft is going to be something like AMD ( or Creative, choose one company that you liked once and hate ever since ) because of Google. Google is going only up because the understand that companies pay, users don't ! Windows is just their ***** operating system. I don't care what it takes for you to understand that a company can NOT stay at the top for so many years. There's a time for downfall. While Google, Intel, IBM supporting Linux because it's good for their business and it's not controlled by a company with a monkey as its head ( that last one is not a euphemism ).
