Gallery: Rise of the Open Source at LinuxWorld
wired.com — LinuxWorld is the E3 for many open source visionaries, tinkerers and zealots who rally around the communal ethos of open software. This year's conference is especially charged. As more open source projects like Firefox go mainstream, it's an exciting time for the GNU gurus to show the rest of the world the light.

- thenns7, on 08/07/2008, -5/+0but do they have crisys?
- rodrigo74, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3Like pretty much everything that comes from Wired, this article has some nice pics but very little substance.
- deadmoo, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1And the substance that is there isn't even accurate. Its 7200 rpm not 720 rpm. Its FreeBSD 7.0 not PC-PSD 7.0. And it also has troll like descriptions like "A lost businessman is lulled to sleep by a barrage of geekery, jargon and woefully optimistic philosophies about open software's transformative potential."
- directrix13, on 08/07/2008, -1/+0Wired hates Linux people.
- xerox, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2"From 7.0 version, PC-BSD will follow the same numeration, as FreeBSD. PC-BSD 7.0 will include KDE4.1."

- chrish01, on 08/07/2008, -1/+1LinuxWorld is the worst opensource convention out there. The only saving grace is that the .org pavilion has some good folks.
The companies who show up are rarely free and opensource and mostly just want to take advantage of the community. I guess thats a given though since someone like Larry Augustine started it. He seems to ***** up everything he touches.- mikelanghorst, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1This is my third year attending, and the conference is definitely getting worse. They added in the "NGDC" or Next Generation Data Center, which is more focused on virtualization and grid computing taking up a large portion of the expo floor. Many of the distros are no longer in attendance. RedHat hasn't been here for the last 3 years at least since I've been coming. Novell and IBM were here in force in 2006 & 2007 yet are nowhere to be found this year. Other than those in the .org pavillion the only commercial distro that is here is Canonical.
Also their wireless connectivity in the sessions is horrendous. Really shouldn't be that difficult.
