- TheZorch, on 06/10/2009, -4/+47Improvements in Linux technology such as this are inevitable and necessary. I still say there's then more innovation in Linux for the past 10 years than there has been in Windows.
- Culyt, on 06/10/2009, -0/+34Any major end user differences between Grub2 and Grub?
I'm still waiting for EFI style boot screens, preferably animated ones. I remember there was a graphical version of LILO that that breakout and other games in it. I understand Grub2 was going to support VGA, but it hasn't happened yet and probably won't for ages :(
I do like the fact that higher/widescreen VGA modes (like 1920x1200) are now supported, although I think thats more the framebuffer stuff in the Linux kernel rather than grub, it doesn't do the menu anyway.
The article says there is a grub gui, any screen shots around?
EDIT: Found some http://grub.gibibit.com/Themes - chubbstar, on 06/10/2009, -2/+36FINALLY.
- PsychoBrat, on 06/10/2009, -0/+26Before anyone comments on the current appearance: it will certainly be tweaked before the final release of Ubuntu 9.10. That's the easy bit -- making sure it's going to work just fine for everyone is the harder, and more important bit.
- rolf, on 06/10/2009, -0/+19I still remember lilo...
- PaulRay, on 06/10/2009, -0/+16I upgraded yesterday. Painless and it works nicely.
The instructions for testing it without committing hare here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Grub2Testing
There is a minor bug in Jaunty, so make sure to read all of the instructions. - horsepie, on 06/10/2009, -1/+16Alpha/Beta versions of OSS software in general start before 2.0 (e.g. 1.9) and work their way up to 2.0 for the final release. GNOME 2.22 started as 2.21 in testing.
- bombula, on 06/10/2009, -1/+15Be warned: GRUB will destroy any HP's recovery capability unless you FIRST make a copy of the MBR (Master Boot Record).
HP puts a key in the MBR to make sure you're not just trying to get a free copy of Windows by installing from bootleg recovery disks (or a ghost of the recovery partition). If you dual-boot Ubuntu or any other Linux distro without disabling GRUB, kiss your recovery capability goodbye. I spent a week trying every hack around, and nothing works. HP will not help you either. You will have to get a new copy of Windows and hunt down all the drivers, etc on your own.
And no, Linux distros do NOT warn you about this danger. - lapubell, on 06/10/2009, -0/+14I personally hate the fact that OEMs are not giving away discs anymore and just putting the recovery onto a hidden partition. First, I want all my disc space, not just most of it.
Second, if your hard drive physically crashes, then what good is a key on your MBR? Hard drives are just too volatile. At least with OS discs, you can make copies and use those if your computer crashes and your original discs are trashed.
Then again, running a Linux distro you don't have to worry about a lot of this stuff. Why should you ever need to put a key in your MBR? That just seems so... silly. - elmundio87, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13oh yeah, clearly your computer should waste time making the bootloader pretty for the whole 2 seconds you look at it.
typical mac user. - abhiroop, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13Have you seen the boot loader for windows? Its EXACTLY the same. This isn't the full OS...just a boot loader. Even the biggest tech Luddite can use this interface. All you have to do is scroll up and down!
- regularsteven, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12you're here to win friends!
- PsychoBrat, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12Nobody is claiming it's new. FTA:
"This is a very good idea, and users of all Linux distributions should replace their old GRUB boot loaders with the next-generation GRUB 2 one, if they didn't already. Why? Simply, because GRUB wasn't updated since 1996 and it doesn't have support for today's BIOSes."
Most distributions have simply stuck with GRUB 1 for this long because it still works in most cases, and any problems with an inadequately tested GRUB 2 could render users' systems un-bootable. Luckily Canonical (and some other distribution vendors) have taken the initiative to offer *optional* GRUB 2 packages for a while now, so they are now confident that it is safe to deploy on all new installations by default. - johnbellone, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11Shaving 2 seconds off a 20 second boot time is pretty darn good.
- paulsmith288, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10Will grub 2 improve boot speed?
I've noticed a slight pause between grub and usplash on a few new jaunty machines. (No idea if thats grub or something else) - lapubell, on 06/10/2009, -1/+9hey man, don't bash HP, they have some of the best hardware support for linux for all kinds of peripherals. seriously, all HP printers I have ever plugged into a linux box work like a charm.
watch your mouth. - warp99, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8I just switched to Grub2 and did notice a quicker transition from the bootloader to the splash screen, but it was only about 1-2 seconds faster. So to answer your question, yes that slight pause is gone.
- sooperdooper, on 06/12/2009, -0/+7I definitely prefer Lilo over Stitch
- warp99, on 06/10/2009, -0/+7Yes, next question.
- stmiller, on 06/10/2009, -1/+8I would rather Grub take the direction of the hackintosh boot loader. Look at these images (scroll down):
http://bit.ly/11sOsY - elmundio87, on 06/10/2009, -5/+12That picture claims to be GRUB 2, but the version is shown as 1.96
hmmmm - inactive, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6I definitely prefer GRUB over LILO
- tubaros, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5I just hope its a bit easier to work with out of the box. The program u can get at the moment to customise grub (move ub, windows around, remove entries etc) is great, but without that youre *****. So long as the fact that people take into account the fact that linux is rarely the only OS on a machine, and cater for that, its all good :-)
- niczar, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5Does it support LVM?
- warp99, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5It's going in that direction since you now have graphical options and custom menus available. See this earlier comment:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/GRUB_2_the_New_Boot_Loa ...
or just click this link
http://grub.gibibit.com/Themes - varchar255, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4With Dell, you can call/e-mail and ask them for the CD. Probably the same with other companies?
- sanford42, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4A point to ponder, johanvm...
That's just the text-based version of it. You can "pretty" it up with a splash screen to put behind it, alter the colors, and the like. - niczar, on 06/10/2009, -1/+5NEVAR FORGET
o/ll - inactive, on 06/10/2009, -2/+5Yes the old Grub with a blue box
- nenadsuperzmaj, on 06/11/2009, -0/+1I hope they make GRUB and kernel upgrading easier for noobs. The questions Ubuntu asks when upgrading kernel can be tricky for inexperienced users.
Nice to see this new stuff due for 9.10 :) - marvinaus, on 06/14/2009, -0/+1They do.
When a customer first turns on their notebook/desktop, a window pops up asking to burn a copy of recovery CDs/DVDs. Solves the MBR/BIOS thus GRUB problem.
If the customer fails to burn a copy of the recovery discs then their HDDs fails. THEN they can order them via HP repair agents but for a fee. From memory. - eugene2k, on 06/12/2009, -0/+1So HP doesn't give you the serial code for windows? The one that's usually written on the bottom of every laptop?
- FlyingCaveman, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1***** like that, that I didn't understand at the time, is the reason i switched to Linux. Thanks HP.:)
- WiseGuy1020, on 06/10/2009, -7/+7***** HP
- rpgmakr, on 06/11/2009, -2/+2Looks as ***** as the current one.
- WiseGuy1020, on 07/08/2009, -0/+0Great "peripherals" not "computers." Their laptops (one of which I am typing from) look flashy but suck ass.
"watch my mouth"
What the ***** you gonna do about it, tough guy? - pr0t3st, on 06/10/2009, -1/+1I haven't read or clicked on the article but I have to assume its the same thing as "SuperGRUB"."
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+0But, it's not. Like ssnford said, it's much more flexible and customizable. Ulike DOS was. Use your head for something other than banging and speaking about things you have no clue about.
- Meep3D, on 06/10/2009, -6/+1Amen. It always pissed me off that Ubuntu was the default in multi-boot, and the UI was so horrible on grub itself there was no real way of working out how to change it.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -19/+5GRUB 2 is new? EPIC FACEPALM.
That *****'s been stable for years now, geez. It's about bloody time. - johanvm, on 06/10/2009, -18/+1New? What about the looks? It looks like MS-DOS (28 years old)!
- RiotHeart, on 06/10/2009, -25/+4Just as I got rid of Ubuntu....
- johanvm, on 06/10/2009, -22/+1No, I haven't...
I don't use Windows, I use OS X.
I understand that GRUB isn,t the full OS,
but nevertheless: an end user of any PC/Mac should never have to deal with such an awful interface!
