- LostOverThere, on 01/27/2009, -0/+59KDE and GNOME developers are not at war with each other like the community generally thinks. Many of the developers are good friends with each other.
- LlamaKing, on 01/26/2009, -2/+40This just keeps getting better and better with each release.
- ThantiK, on 01/27/2009, -1/+27I honestly think they need to get KDE 4.2 into "the mainstream" before Windows 7 comes out so we can truly gauge the enthusiasm of people trying the stuff out vs Windows 7 astroturfers.
- mcbutterbuns, on 01/27/2009, -0/+23I've been using KDE 4.2 built from SVN for about a month now. Its been flawless. I'm surprised at how stable it has been as well. There have only been a few minor crashes. Its miles ahead of 4.1 and light years beyond 4.0.
That's not to say that there can't be improvements to it but for what I use it for (coding and basic desktop usage) its just as good as the 3.5 series if not better.
Tomorrow's release is gonna be a good day! - inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+20This whole KDE vs Gnome thing is as pointless as a rivalry between Tea drinkers and Coffee drinkers.
Let's celebrate the joy of Linux all together. - bryantee, on 01/27/2009, -1/+17Still prefer GNOME because of the simple aesthetics. But that Step app (edu.kde.org) looks awesome! So does Marble.
- clickwir, on 01/26/2009, -0/+17It is coming along quite well. I'm rocking 4.1.4 right now and there are still lots of things missing and quirks here and there.
4.2 Will probably be I recommend people start using KDE4. Before 4.2, I'd almost consider it beta. - Frostek, on 01/27/2009, -1/+17I agree completely. Unless someone drinks coffee, in which case they can go to Hell... ;-)
- ehamberg, on 01/27/2009, -0/+15they didn't. :-)
konqueror is still there, and i still use it both as my browser and file manager. - Codename, on 01/27/2009, -2/+17Sooo, what interfaces are you talking about that look like the Windows interface? How is GNOME overdone? Next thing you know you're gonna say XFCE is a heavy interface.
- lendrick, on 01/27/2009, -0/+13I'm not sure I remember anyone saying that about KDE 4.0. 4.1 was a start, but really, 4.2 is just starting to reach feature parity with 3.5 (although it's still a got a few rough spots).
This was a lot of suffering, but I think in the end, KDE will be better for it. - coldkill3r, on 01/27/2009, -0/+13I just upgraded to kde 4.2 this afternoon in opensuse, and I'm loving it.
- smotpoker, on 01/27/2009, -0/+124.x is really pretty awesome, a lot of people just hate because the added modularity also added some bugs. I fully agree that there are some bugs but most I've seen are completely trivial and/or cosmetic.
I upgraded my sister's kubuntu system about a month ago to Intrepid (with KDE4). So far the only real issue has been taskbar entries "disappearing" while OO.o is open. Once it closes they show up again though and they are still accessible via non-taskbar methods (alt+tab or minimizing/moving whatever windows are in the way).
BTW, I know they say Kubuntu isn't the best distro to try KDE on but it worked fine with previous versions of Kubuntu and I figured I should go ahead and try KDE4 on it before migrating her to an entirely new distro - LostOverThere, on 01/27/2009, -0/+11Nothing wrong with being gay or an atheist. Though its incredibly sad about the HIV. I feel for him.
- alexiadeath, on 01/27/2009, -0/+11try it, you will be surprised. As a long time KDE user I spent last two KDE 4 relases exiled in gnome myself, but KDE 4.2 is neat. now if they would only fix kwin to play nice with GIMP...
- coldkill3r, on 01/27/2009, -0/+9Ehh? Who cares? As long as he can code, that's all that matters.
- alexiadeath, on 01/27/2009, -1/+11universal things are good for nothing. I actually like Dolphin as file manager. One of my long time annoyances with KDE has been the multiuse of konqueror for both web and filemanager. It does a decent job, but not a good one. And yes, you can still use it.
- CrunchyWater, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8Slackware, Arch and Gentoo are aimed at power users who like to tweak everything manually, and Debian (stable, at least) does not have the latest KDE 4.2 packages yet.
Kubuntu and SUSE are both desktop distros aimed at a much broader audience, and apply all kinds of customizations to make the desktop experience smoother out of the box. To suggest that users of Kubuntu and SUSE try power user distros to get a 'better' KDE (or Gnome) experience is just being ridiculous and unhelpful. - starsky51, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8I don't think "the mainstream" know what kde is and that's the point thantik is making.
- jellygraph, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8Torvalds
- ScottyDelicious, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8So, to summarize, you dunno quite a few things? Thank you for your detailed report of your experience with whatever it was.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8I wanted to try 4.0 too but as everyone and their dog at the time said it wasn't ready I decided to wait until my distro of choice made the switch.
I'm now on 4.1.4 and while I still experience some peculiar crashes and still itch for some of the missing KDE 3.5 functionality I find the improvements over 3-series more than compensate for these.
Roll on, 4.2! - inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8 So sad on the HIV.
- Jareth86, on 01/27/2009, -0/+8Then we can't trust him; he hates America! Quick fellow patriots, to Alaska! (runs into a wall)
- kouchan21, on 01/27/2009, -3/+9Why did they drop konqueror for dolphin btw? What is so wrong with a file manager that can double as a browser?
- bdonline, on 01/27/2009, -0/+6Although Jason didn't elaborate on what exactly he liked in the new release, his post is worthy of appreciation.
Being critical is important, but criticizing for the sake of it is wrong. One shouldn't forget that the eventual goal is to have viable alternatives in the end. For this both GNOME and KDE have to continually improve. Occasional posts appreciating good aspects of each do help in this regard. - inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+5And you care, why? I think that's great! Sept for the HIV part, sadly.
- addehh, on 01/27/2009, -0/+6I don't know, that worked pretty well for Windows.
Oh wait .. - Swivelstick, on 01/27/2009, -0/+6And I'm not kidding when I call you a really sad lowlife *****.
- Shadic, on 01/27/2009, -0/+6It's the blog owned by the man that the Digg submission is about, you buffoon.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+5I read somewhere (possibly the developer of the Lancelot Menu) that once the developers get this massive bug-squashing/stability release out the door, the 'feature freeze' comes off so people can start coding some new stuff using the platform - I can't wait to see what people come up with!
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+5....a kid who also develops for KDE's main 'competition' as a desktop environment, Gnome, hence it holds appeal for people interested in KDE 4.2.
And it's just a shucks-darn nice thing to hear a dev on the 'other side' say. Makes Linux users feel warm and familial. - AlesDigg, on 01/27/2009, -0/+4logged into digg just to bury your comment
- Vadi0, on 01/27/2009, -2/+7A Gnome dev saying that "KDE 4.2 rocks" is praise - doesn't mean that it's "omg, it's way better, I'm ditching Gnome and you should too!". It's a compliment to your competition!
(which still did not finish their HIG: http://wiki.openusability.org/guidelines/index.php ... Not sure what guidelines are they going by while designing.) - nebloof, on 01/27/2009, -0/+5As one of the quotes from the website goes... don't look back! The only thing I miss is the customizability that KDE 3 has. But I also understand KDE 4 is pretty much new, and we'll probably get all the custom apps and everything in time like KDE 3 did.
- Kragnerac, on 01/27/2009, -0/+4...and what relevance does this personal information pertain to being that he is a GNOME developer who happens to enjoy a competing desktop environment and congratulates the team who substantiated it?
- kouchan21, on 01/27/2009, -0/+5yeah I'm using both actually, but dolphin is the default one. I was wondering why they push the latter.
What I miss with dolphin is the possibility to split the screen in more than 2 parts. - kleverness, on 01/27/2009, -0/+4Currently Amarok 2.0.1 is quite stable and feature rich, very nice. Although there's plenty room for improvements, it's just a matter of time. And K3b is not ready yet, but k3b kde3 version works perfectly on my kde4 environment.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -0/+3Actually, I heard that Kubuntu wasn't the best KDE distro out there too, so looked at MEPIS and Mandriva - both offered significant advantages over Kubuntu but were also easy to use and accessible. In fact, probably more so.
- Sammi84, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3Don't know why you're getting dugg down. You should be allowed to have that opinion.
- Coestar, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2so what?
- CorpBy, on 01/27/2009, -0/+3Try to install 180.xx drivers. KDE had some performance problems with Geforce 8x, but nvidia already fixed it at latest drivers
- setset, on 01/27/2009, -1/+4Well said bro!
- nunopinheiro, on 01/27/2009, -0/+3and you can also do the icons ons the desktop thing all over again.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Usability Is the right address
- johnnyzero, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2The reason I ditched KDE when they released a hideous 4.0 and didn't just go back to 3.5 is because 3.5 is not forking and continuing development based on the features of the 3.x release.
4.0 made some very significant changes and as far as I know, they are not trying to reproduce the 3.x desktop at all.
It really has to do with the mid to long term development goals of the KDE team. I switched to Gnome because there were only a few small features missing that made me use KDE instead, and with 4.0 those few small features missing paled in comparison to the complete revamp and change from 3.x, and now I can just keep using Gnome as it progresses and when they do a complete and total revamp of their UI and dev goals, I'll reconsider KDE again :P - StupotAce, on 01/27/2009, -1/+3If you hated KDE 4.0, then why didn't you keep using KDE3.5 ? I don't understand anybody who says that they preferred KDE3.5, but had to switch to gnome because of KDE4. Just keep using KDE3.5 if you preferred that over gnome.
- jellygraph, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2i agree, i love konqueror
- stoanhart, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2He recently switched to Gnome, because he hates the 4 series of KDE so far. Saw it on Slashdot a few days ago.
- inactive, on 01/27/2009, -3/+5I am not a fan, I've always found using KDE to be a trying experience.
