- Pseudorious, on 03/18/2009, -3/+34Thank God, PST imports from Outlook!
Though I love each new iteration, I think it's time to join the heretics and support more concentration on Gnome 3. - ptFoe, on 03/18/2009, -5/+35Solid improvements but they still haven't given the ability to have different wallpapers for the different workspaces. Or let Nautilus have transparent backgrounds there by allowing Compiz to control the wallpapers on the workspaces.
- Vadi0, on 03/19/2009, -1/+31They made Brasero default now I think. Before, Nautilus had its own burning app.
- bjs3171, on 03/19/2009, -3/+31haha. they releasaed Gnome on St. Patrick's Day?
- Khast, on 03/19/2009, -6/+32Keep going Gnome! Put some fire under MS and Apple for innovation.
- abbathdoom, on 03/19/2009, -1/+23Lets be honest, the changes here are minimal at best. This is good in that its evidence Gnome is really mature now, but its also evidence they need to start working on Gnome 3.0 sooner rather than later!
- evilgeorgew, on 03/19/2009, -6/+23I gave KDE a try again yesterday. I don't know why I keep doing that to myself...KDE makes me feel like I ate a few too many packages of marshmallow peeps.
- ed54, on 03/19/2009, -0/+17I care
- chadsmith729, on 03/19/2009, -5/+22Bradley, and Balance go back to Windows if you want to hate. Linux is to be open source and so some people like KDE opposed to GNOME and vice versa. There is no place in the linux community for the banter that goes on between the two desktop environments. Let's get to the top of the food chain then we can start to really banter with one another which one is better.
To me KDE 4 is a lot like Vista. Where GNOME is still a lot like XP. That's my opinion about it. It doesn't mean any hating needs to go on between the two parties. Personally I use GNOME, because for me it's laid out better and has the right programs that I need to do my daily work.
We are all here for one common purpose, people like you are not needed to help. - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -7/+23GUIs are for little girly men.
- manstein01, on 03/19/2009, -1/+17New disc burning application? Was there an issue with Brasero that I am not aware of?
- CalcProgrammer1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+16Yes, especially Samba shares need work, trying to get a Linux computer playing nice with Windows machines on a network can be really tough and I have had trouble accessing shared folders using Linux that I can see easily in Windows.
- srg13, on 03/19/2009, -0/+15I'm really liking the look of the new volume control applet - it's starting to look like PulseAudio may actually be more useful than Alsa with this release, with the per-application volumes and the easier input and output switching and such.
- jejeje666, on 03/19/2009, -0/+13A good MBA should know that doing things RIGHT should be a PRIORITY =D
- melonade, on 03/19/2009, -0/+12Well guess what! That's not irony.
- evilgeorgew, on 03/19/2009, -1/+13umm - you should give it a try. It sounds like you are making judgment based on screenshots and have never actually used gnome. With compiz and awn/cairo-dock etc you can make gnome look like what ever you want. Try making win 95 look and feel like OS X or Vista. This is all possible using gnome and GNU/Linux. Do a youtube search for compiz fusion. gnome is solid.
- bratterscain, on 03/19/2009, -3/+14Can I finally change the universal mousewheel speed? It's 2009 ffs.
- paulsmith288, on 03/19/2009, -0/+11there is more than enough M$ news on digg to keep you happy.
Or is it even worse that people are getting a choice about what software they use. The shock / horror. - Wandel, on 03/19/2009, -0/+11Both Windows and OS X are still using it...
- powatom, on 03/19/2009, -0/+11Gnome: Functionality.
Appearance is a different thing altogether. Vista's start menu is an absolute disgrace to both form and function. Gnome is far easier and quicker to use. - Vadi0, on 03/19/2009, -0/+11Try adding some gnome panel applets.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -6/+16I love Gnome, but to call innovative?!
- mrsteveman1, on 03/19/2009, -2/+12It's not so much that, its just i find KDE to be excessively complicated. Options are great, but a GUI is inherently limited as to the space available, and if you stuff every possible option in even when uber-geeks are the only ones who will ever care, the experience suffers.
Gnome doesn't do that which i respect, but they could use some KDE-isms, a bit more to control panels and widgets than a single flat window with one button or dropdown etc.
I think Gnome also suffers from "looks like ***** out of the box" syndrome, so does KDE3 stuff though it looks a little more like XP in some ways or it did in the past, so it is familiar. Ubuntu and the others need to do a better job making a beautiful usable desktop by default, make 80% of users happy and you win. - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+10Or in that case will it even be in 9.04????
- freezerburn666, on 03/19/2009, -5/+14so how do i get the new gnome on ibex? :D
- Elranzer, on 03/19/2009, -0/+9Windows 7's "superbar" is just Windows' taskbar with *some* of KDE's features (not all).
Seriously, Windows (even 7) is pretty behind the times when it comes to usability. Even Gnome kills it in features. - leamanc, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Cygwin is your friend.
- lilbugleboy09, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Wasn't Digg created to be a tech news site?
- zwaldowski, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Yes, Ubuntu is based around Gnome schedules so that the newest release will have the newest Gnome. They use the unstable/release-candidate versions of the newest version until then.
- cday119, on 03/19/2009, -3/+11Haha You know you're a nerd when you put an exclamation after Gnome 2.26 Release.
- chadsmith729, on 03/19/2009, -1/+9So happy to see Gnome came out with a new release. Keep up the great work!
- InorganicMatter, on 03/19/2009, -1/+9Not simpler. If they'd just fix Samba so that it works properly (like every other distro out there), we wouldn't have any problems, but they insist on using a half-baked implementation of GVFS.
- Youssif, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8A welcomed improvement in the Microsoft Exchange support. Keep the integration much easier ..
- motang, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8Very nice additions, looking forward to using them.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+7That was for 2.24, it was a Google SOC project, you think by 6 months now it would have been complete
- SniperZero, on 03/19/2009, -2/+9that already happened didn't you get the memo?
/s - fjsferreira, on 03/19/2009, -2/+9I wish linux never takes over the desktop! Let windows struggle with all of the malware, we're good as we are.
- BalancingAct, on 03/19/2009, -1/+8Those comments are sad.
- mohtasham, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6Hope to see it in Arch stable repository soon.
- init6, on 03/18/2009, -5/+11Ahhh...here comes another virtual machine I need to try!
- BalancingAct, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7Won't happen for a long long time, despite many of us wishing that it would sooner. It will be baby steps all the way
- evilgeorgew, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7'3rd party addons' ? What do you think a linux distro is?
- sirhomer, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6You can not install KDE Plasma on Windows though. Only the applications can be installed. I suggest you read up on Plasma though, it's a cool technology.
I think what he ment is the distinction between a "3rd party application" and "1st party application" in Linux is pretty irrelevant. Or even possible to make. - slymi2005, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6If I am not mistaken, Ubuntu is based off of Gnome's 6 month cycle so yes. Just did an update in 9.04 alpha 6 and it says I have gnome 2.26.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 03/19/2009, -0/+61991 was the year of the Linux desktop, did you not know that already?!?
- slymi2005, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6I agree, it looks nice but I keep coming back to gnome.
- ethana2, on 03/19/2009, -0/+6I'd wait for the Jaunty beta, actually. They usually have a bunch of bugs to fix in the .1 release anyways.
- seventhc, on 03/19/2009, -2/+7That can actually be done, you just have to know how to do it or search google.
http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&a ... - StatusWoe, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5missed edit by 3 sec:
once you set compiz to display the backgrounds you want you can go into gconf-editor and under apps -> nautilus -> preferences set show desktop to disabled.
There may be another way but this worked for me.
