- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Nice... I really like the thumbnails in the theme customization. It's a lot better than clicking on an item and seeing what changes.
Merging the different applets into one was a good idea too in my opinion. - tuxerware, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Ubuntu 7.10 isn't out of beta yet, when it's finally released it will use GNOME 2.20.
- xtlosx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15I saw a major speedup from gnome 2.16 -> 2.19 ...... If it gets any faster, that will be even better! I love gnome!
- muep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Gnome just isn't made for those who wish to tweak everything. They have sensible defaults. One can replace many Gnome programs with others, though.
If you want to be able to configure everything, go ahead and use KDE. I like Gnome's simplicity and mostly use it, even though I tend to try KDE every now and then. - Theli, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I personally like KDE more than GNOME, but I can certainly see why a lot of people would prefer the latter.
- jbus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The speed at which GNOME runs is relative to the hardware you are running it on as well as the distro and file system. Though GNOME has a reputation for being slightly more sluggish, I don't feel there is any major difference in speed between KDE and GNOME. One thing you can do to speed up responsiveness of both KDE, GNOME (or any other DE) is to use Compiz Fusion as your window manager. This will take the load of window management off your CPU and put it on your GPU, thus increasing overall system performance and responsiveness.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Discredit to you for thinking that Gnome is handicapped in any real way. I have KDE and Gnome installed. They both work great, and do what I need. Whats the problem here?
- cvp1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Works fine here...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I wish gnome would let you choose a font for the panels on the desktop than using the application font.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What are you talking about. The Linux Desktop is about choice, and there are tons of different open/save dialogs to choose from:

You know what Linux users say, if you don't like the open/save dialog, use a different application. - 16777216, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3GNOME color chooser lets you change the panel font.

When the people will understand that 'to each his own'? - Mejogid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Erm, that'd be England, the country that contains Greenwich, and so is in the Greenwich Mean Time time zone.
- Sabretou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Thanks, I'll try Compiz. GNOME used to run slow for me, but when I tried KDE,it was relatively much faster (although it crashed more often). I was wondering if there is going to be a general increase in speed.
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what specifically did you notice? anything measurable?
i wonder if there is anything in the changelog that might explain it? - anshuman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You are right on money about speed. it really is getting faster :)
- robdiggity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"When the people will understand that 'to each his own'?" - My guess is "people" might start as soon as you do...
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...Which is currenty in GMT+1 (British Summer Time).
- oobuntu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1that's funny. gnome used to crash a lot on me, so i switched to KDE and found it stable for the last 18 months or more since i switched
admittedly i also switched because of baghira http://baghira.sourceforge.net/
(note that it doesn't seem to work well with beryl, so try it at your own risk) - warkro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The site is down so here's the direct link to the screencast.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1125713145851335579 - deadbaby, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1After almost 10 years of using GNOME I am still confused by the GNOME preferences menu. This is a good start but I'd like to see something similar to the OSX System Preferences app.
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1KDE reduces grammatical skillz!!
lookup "too" - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0QT (which kde is based on) tends to be faster than GTK (which is what Gnome uses), I used to love gnome, but the lack of customization (easily at least), the slowness of gtk, and the "users are dumb" philosophy of the developers made me switch.
- anshuman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1the same things can to be done easily , but i understand can get tricky for NEW user .
http://linuxtruthiness.blogspot.com/2007/08/changing-cursor.html - Sabretou, on 10/10/2007, -9/+5Looks and nice and convenient, but is this version of GNOME going to be faster? The sluggishness is the only reason I had to ditch it. :(
- mlblac02, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2But you still can't change the awful layout of the file open/save dialog...?
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1Surely you mean GMT+1? What country is actually in GMT at the moment?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2What is cool is that Ubuntu 7.10 is using Gnome 2.19.2
- robdiggity, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2I wish I had a nickel for every time I have read a post that starts with "I wish gnome would let you..." People still use gnome? I must admit that is one of the rare times I have seen a response to such a post that didn't consist of some guy shouting down the OP. Credit to 16777216. And credit to fatas for continuing to plod on with gnome.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -13/+1Whoops. Web site is b0rked (WordPress error) @ 6 past midnight GMT.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -22/+6KDE is a far superior desktop. Gnome has to many handicaps.
