- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -4/+39Who would've thought going from 2.16 to 2.18 would only bring about an incremental improvement...
- animalmuther76, on 07/30/2008, -5/+16yes the version numbers do kind of give it away
/sarcasm - schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Now with improved Tango iconset as well!
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/weblog.php/Artwork/Marathon - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good to see Baobab has a refresh button.
- MWeather, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9So which features were removed this time?
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I also like they way you can view your file system to now.
- Cbeck527, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I have heard that this was to be integraded in to Ubuntu 7.04, but is it possible to update in 6.10?
- zetec, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah, but the difference is that GNOME is free. Vista is $100~$300 worth of "no must-haves", GNOME is a quick (free) download of "no must-haves".
//just spent hours getting wpa_supplicant working with PEAP in Ubuntu 6.10 before finding out that the 7.04 release will cure all my woes. Argh, two weeks away! - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"This release also removes the file search feature from Baobab"
"There's bad news if you're an Ataxx fan, though. It was removed from GNOME" - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Ubuntu targets GNOME releases. GNOME has a 6 month release cycle, Ubuntu has a 6 month release cycle.
//edit - maybe in backports but upgrading a DE is no small feat. Better to just upgrade the whole system generally.// - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try it, it's not like you could never return to Gnome if you didn't like KDE...
- GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Probably when hell freezes over. That argument was getting political so Linus ended it by providing patches. I hope I'm wrong though but the GNOME devs have a reputation about this sort of thing.
- hamobu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gnome is a great desktop. When I started using Ubuntu, I was dissapointed with Gnome. It was simple with few menus and options, and after a few minutes I ran ouf things to see and play with. But now, after almost two years with gnome, I definetly get it. Gnome has caused me little problems and frustrations. Before, I would tweak and configure linux till it breaks. Now I have a job and a wife, and I definetly do not want to do that. I ran a web browser, listen to music, ocasionally open an excell spreadsheet in gnumeric, and it works most of the time (excell spreadsheet in gnumeric that is). Sometimes I find that there is something I would like to change but I can't. I could look for the app to fix it, but most of the time I just shrugg my sholders and move on.
Lets face it, most people that use linux, are computer type people that are looking for a toy to play with. They get dissapointed with gnome and the lack of razzle dazzle. But most people do not use computers as toys. They are actually looking to get something done. Gnome is perfect because it lets you forget that you are using gnome. Gnome is about usability, not about Gnome itself. - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6IMHO KDE is way more useful than Gnome, for the sheer amount of unburied functionality it offers. Add a composite manager like Beryl/Compiz/the merged project, tweak the appearance to your liking, and in the end it is on par with OSX. Save these configurations so you won't have to configure it again, and you're set.
- NinjaPlimsoles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Sounds great. I'm currently running Ubuntu Edgy with Gnome and Beryl. Is it really worth it going to KDE?
- etechonline2002, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that what you get for being a good Microsoft customer.
1. they take your cash for the console.
2. bend you over and wait.,,,,,for the right time to F@ck You in the @$$.
and you know the best part is that they love every min of it. - spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dot release = bug fixes. zzzzzzzzzzzz
- NinjaPlimsoles, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Lets hope GNOME 3.0 (+ pick your distro) will actually be decent enough to use as an alternative to Windows.
The Linux platform is awesome, it's these butt-ugly desktop environments like GNOME that ruin the experience!
What we need: Linux + Aqua - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Most of the improvements are general usability improvements imo. While the release isn't huge, it is a good release.
I am not sure what the linux.com writer expected in a 2.xx to 2.xx+1 release and he definitely doesn't tell us in the article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I knew you couldn't give a truthful answer, you know this was posted before yours. This is exactly why you're known as a joke around here. You're so ***** lame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This story-- submitted 4 days ago.
Your story-- submitted 3 days ago.
How is yours the original? Can you answer it without making some ***** story up? Doubtful. - jenkins86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This story is a dupe. It was already submitted several days ago:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/GNOME_2_18_Shows_Incremental_Improvement_2 - jenkins86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ispep: You clearly did not notice that I submitted this story 14 hours earlier!
I know you have trouble understanding how dupes work, but it's not a difficult concept. I find an interesting news story. I submit it to Digg. Somebody else comes along and sees the story I have submitted. They resubmit it. That means that their submission is the dupe. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ill digg to that!
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Well, that site has had some articles that are critical wrt Linux. Yesterday I received a message saying that Novell shareholders discuss the possibility of buying VA Software (Linux.com, NewsForge, Slashdot, etc). I hope it's not true. People have already been complaining about all the Get the Facts propaganda in these sites, which have lost their way.
- jenkins86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1ispep: You're correct. My story was submitted a number of hours before this one. Thus mine is the original, and this one is the dupe. It really makes me sick how some people will duplicate stories that I have already posted.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1blah blah blah, i'm jenkins86, everyone dupes my posts, i'm so mad. I post multiple dupes every day and know it, yet won't admit it. blah blah blah
- ntfs, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8Giant Notably Obnoxious Memory Eater
just kidding good work guys!! - subtle, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5I find myself becoming incrementally more bored ...
- cr1t, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Shock at a version increment od .02 shows only incremental improvement! And no must have option? Sounds like Vista

What is Digg?
