--------------------------
This release is a snapshot of development code. Although it is
buildable and usable, it is primarily intended for testing and hacking
purposes. GNOME uses odd minor version numbers to indicate
development status." - secleinteer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Is there any reason that every dev release of GNOME hits the front page of Digg? Most end users aren't interested in beta code; it would be much more helpful to post just the final version.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I assume you mean a list of what was removed... this is a Gnome release.

"Gnome Released!"
It's all in the wording. And the number of exclamation points!
People only read story titles. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Gnome guys are not currently planning a 3.0, not even in the far future. Gnome 3.0 will come when GTK3 comes out, and the GTK guys see no need to change it so drastically.
- thtroyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ubuntu releases are synced with Gnome releases.
If you want it on 'your Ubuntu', upgrade to the next version (which will be Feisty Fawn -- don't try it till beta/RC though). - Peterh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7check out the network manager applet... it's not officially part of gnome (that I know of) but it's great for handling wireless.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It won't be until whatever is after Edgy (6.10) that we see GNOME 2.18. It's a major enough component that they won't roll it in until the next Ubuntu release.
- Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Have you actually used GNOME? Don't bash ***** you haven't used. I thought GNOME would suck forever, but then one day I tried it and now I think it is awesome (even though I still prefer ratpoison for my wm)

Look there, they have what's planned for 2.18 and 2.20 - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here ya go:
http://live.gnome.org/TwoPointSeventeen/ReleaseNotes - kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What's new or what will be the new features for 2.18?
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, they won't go to 3.0 until they decide that there has been enough change in the way that they design apps, or some new paradigm for the desktop comes out, that it warrants the X.0 jump. That's what happened with 2.0; GTK got a massive API change, and they changed how they design their apps. The Gnome Human Interface Guidelines came out of that too.
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That PR needs less humor and more information, such as what is in this release.
- oobuntu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Can't wait"?
I've checked the roadmap, 2.18 isn't exactly earth-shattering - which of these features were you particularly eager for? - drag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Is there any reason that every dev release of GNOME hits the front page of Digg? Seeing how this is digg I would hazard to guess that people saw the article, cared about the development release and the code and decided to digg it up.
As far as I know I don't think there is a gnome fanboy in control of the digg counting mechanism. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3It would be nice to have a neat gui for wireless WPA connectivity. After a week I have WPA up and running and stable.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Can't wait for 2.18. I love GNOME, it's clean and highly customizable, and it looks better than KDE. I like KDE too, I'm not bashing it by any means at all, I just prefer GNOME.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been using Feisty on my other laptop since it first came out and it works great. Im using Kubuntu though, so I dont have a rock solid kde release as opposed to a gnome beta.
- x3nos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Potentially deprecate Legacy (Non-HAL) Battery Applet from GNOME Applet? As power manager has applet for this already"
That's what I am holding out for. Can't wait!
/*sarcasm*/ - x3nos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Xenogis
Agreed - I came over as a long time KDE and Xfce user to Gnome about 3 months ago. I thought one day "meh. I have nothing better to do, lets try Gnome" And things actually worked. I remember pre 2.x releases being so nasty and full of bugs, nothing ever worked. But besides Xfce this has actually become my second most used desktop in *nix. - shuffle2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2raftysworld: heh my thoughts exactly
- thtroyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@drizek
Just a precaution. I have no doubt many have run Feisty without issues for a while now, but I've noticed that Ubuntu unstable is usually fairly safe once it hits beta or so. Before that, it can be pretty shaky for the masses. - r3tex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of course, it's good with prerelease snapshots.
It's so that "geeks" (the original target audience of this site) can follow up on technology development.
*sigh* ..... but you're right ...
If UNIX / Linux / GNU / BSD / everything == Ubuntu for you, then stuff like this is probably not so interesting. - sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Have you actually used GNOME? Don't bash ***** you haven't used. I thought GNOME would suck forever, but then one day I tried it and now I think it is awesome (even though I still prefer ratpoison for my wm"
Ahh, the old assumption that if you don't like something, you must not have tried it and procede with accusations from there Quit. I did try it, several times, most recently with version 2.16. Quite frankly, it's an inferior desktop to KDE and XFCE. it's both more resource hungry and slower than either. That fact is a paradox. considering how feature poor of desktop it is, offering few customization options. Further, it treats the users like they had the brain the size walnut infested with a fungus that stunted the poor nut's growth. For example, in the menus I might see an application labled "Movie Player" or something to that effect. Which movie player? I usually have several. I might see "web browser." Isn't that so bloody helpful? I have Opera, Konqueror, Firefox, Seamonkey, Dillo, Ephinany, Galeon, and Lynx for ***** and giggles.
Customization in Gnome is terrible. Yes, it was easy to get themes through Gnome Arts, but what if you just want to tweak the color of a title bar? The text color is a little to close to the title bar color, for example. You have to change the entire color theme, for what I can tell.
In short, Gnome has been moving in the wrong direction for years. Removing features and stripping down the interface is not usablity. In fact, it's the opposite. - sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Screw higs and GTK versions. They just haven't on enough features to remove to warrant a 3.0 release yet
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ive tried network manager on three laptops and it only works on one of them. That app is great, but it needs some work.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Ubuntu releases are synced with Gnome releases."
No, they're not. They're every six months, if a Gnome is released or not. Dapper took longer to ensure greater stability. - sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Potentally deprecate gnome-cd-player from gnome-utils as Rhythmbox now can do Audio CD Playback [BaptisteMilleMathias: AFAIK Rhythmbox in not part of GNOME Desktop and was not proposed, I think Sound-Juicer is the application to use]
That's another great added feature to Gnome 2.18! I'm waiting with baited breath! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4do you know whr the new features are listed. ..
- pronto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Meh, Xfce is better then gnome and kde... more customizable :
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5KDE 4 will have major issues, wait for KDE 4.1 at least
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2wow, I have to get this onto my ubuntu!
(well, maybe in march when it's released and is stable) - xaxxon, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4OMFG GNOME 2.18.0 FTW!
Seriously. The fifth development release on the way to 2.18.0? Imagine how much work it would be if they ever wanted to do a 3.0.0! - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I'm sure digg will have every ***** a KDE developer takes on the front page until it's released (which will also most likely be on the front page), just like every other popular piece of software.
- gaagaale, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6when will KDE 4.0 will be released. I prefer KDE.

What is Digg?
