- procopio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Is there a CLI interface command to access the RAM memory?
/pleonasm - felchdonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11That's the interface you use to work on the ATM machine. It lets you access the CPU unit.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12For an uber linux geek this is like porn.
- procopio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Do you need to type your PIN number to use it?
- mustnap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8that machine might have been using AC current
- posneg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yeah and his mom is a registered RN.
- dwbell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Here's one reason... to send an email from a bash script. Perhaps you have a cron script to backup files across your network and log the files that are backed up. You could use this to email the log file to yourself.
Here's another more evil reason. You could put a key logger on a linux machine and set a cron job to email you the key log. Oh that's a good one! - ClayDragon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7 Is it displayed on an LCD display?
- Fritzed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Or, you could install elinks CLI web browser from a package and just browse gmail.
- Tenlow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8You've never met a linux user, have you?
- dwbell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Because you can follow the steps once and have automated email
- sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5well, I don't know about lynx, but elinks works perfectly. Tried it not two seconds ago.
- rodrigo74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Was it written with BASIC code to parse HTML language through the VPN network on my PC computer? Please RSVP.
- PurgueFlantar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Wow cool! Gmail on my computer after only 22 pages of instructions! Yes, 22, check for yourself.
- DDRSkata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Awesome! I can use this to have someone send me the results to the VMA awards!
- sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4are you an *actual* retard?
- procopio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4G is for Google, thats sure. I wonder what the other letters stand for...
- lurksinshadow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I wouldn't do it, but Linux is about freedom of choice - dugg for that reason. Might be quite handy if you have multiple gmail users on your home network. Not long ago I used to use fetchmail for getting mail from gmail, this pop, and that pop, but then I decided it was simpler to just use gmail's pop access to get it all for me so I can access it from anywhere.
And yes, I don a tinfoil hat each time I get my mail. - crownedgriffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3TL;DR to the max.
- Fartag, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'm obviously retarded since I wrote this before realizing what the hell was going on (R.A.M. memory, just got it) Too late since I submitted already.. Oh well here it is:
With user level access you can access memory for processes you own at:
/proc/PID/mem (see man proc for tonnage of other things)
You can also access memory from any offset (from: man mem):
/dev/mem RAM (physical access)
/dev/kmem Kernel memory (virtual memory)
/dev/port Various I/O port access
Anything with basic read/write/seek should work on these things, (shell level cat,dd,od,... and system calls like open, read, lseek) - BlackAle, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8how pointless
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4For an uber troll this is like sex.
- dumbtech, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What's wrong with just using Mutt?
- sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2elinks, however, works perfectly. I just tried it. Even supports the mouse if you're using gnome-terminal (or whatever)
- splattnik, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is a bit old pulling pop-acounts so im not so amazed.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2This is just some geeky fun for other geeks....your mother doesn't have to go to this with her ubuntu box.
- LegendarySock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1So... this is considered NSFW then?
- nswint, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Good Mail Always Is Lucrative
- br0ther, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1mailx would be easier to use in the bashmailing than the setup for gmail.
- jbhannah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Not that they would know, not having anything to compare this to.
Original comment dugg because it's sad, but very, very true. Article dugg because it's awesome. - aaron.dunlap, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3what bothers me the most about this story is that the footer says he is the father of triplets... but there are only two daughters in the picture.... 0_o .... what the heck did they do with the other one???
- arizonagroove, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Obviously you just read the title and made a snap judgement.. This is not simply how to read Gmail via cli programs, it's an introduction to things like fetchmail and postfix and that's plenty useful to a lot of people.
- bananaguyc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Okay people, this actually is really lame. Yes, GMAIL is pretty cool and all since they do offer free POP access, but this tutorial actually applies to any standard POP e-mail account, not just GMAIL.
- mdkoch84, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2damn, and i thought i was a computer nerd.
- rodrigo74, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Maybe she was taking the picture? :P
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Geez! That's some very detailed page. Edits go back to May 4 15:34:47 EDT 2005.
- soleblazer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2yeah , its simple!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Ever tried using gmail with lynx? you can't, not anymore.
I even checked it out for you: http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2007/07/07/gmail-doesnt-support-lynx/ - skbenja, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Oh my God, you can read e-mail without using X? Wow. Fancy that. This story isn't 20 years old or anything...no digg.
- jrak, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I prefer to check my gmail like a real linux user... via emacs.
*wince* - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I financed my car for 3% APR.
It hits max horsepower at high RPMs.
Got my shoes at DSW Shoe Warehouse. - Aythun, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I wonder what GMAIL is an acronym of.
- ilovekubuntu, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Anyone heard of Mozilla Thunderbird v2? I started downloading gmail in about 1 min after installing it.
- discer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I go to try it in my ubuntu and my mother computer (she have 3 computer, 2 with windows and 1 with Xp)
- GaryS278, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1wow, why would anyone in their right mind follow all the steps in this article
- OropheR, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1Some diggers saw Linux, and digged it without watching.
- leksdraven, on 10/11/2007, -5/+0Buried. I'm a GUI kind of guy. So sorry that some people are stuck in the Stone Age.
- yurimxpxman, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4wtf? Who in their right mind would go to all that trouble when you can simply use lynx to check your gmail? Buried as lame.
- posneg, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4And people wonder why Linux adoption is so slow... "Now grandma, I'm going to send you a link so that you can login to Gmail. It's EASY!"

What is Digg?
