- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is related to Nvidia and not Sony. Nvidia releases drivers for their chipsets and only they does that. You can blame Sony all you want but it's up to Nvidia to make this release...no go and be biased somewhere else!
The only way Sony would be involved would be a joint release of them and Nvidia for the driver...but that hasn't happened in the Linux world as of yet! - googzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3neko - you're an ignorant ass.
learn a few things about how consoles work and how they are manufactured before you waste ppls time with your ignorant and biased SH1T. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sigh... another troll you wants to hold Sony accountable for everything. Go ahead and throw Linux on your 360 and see what it supports.
Sony didn't write Linux, they simply made it available. In fact, they have so far been doing a good job making their kernel changes available to the Linux community. But get with the program: they didn't personally invent and build all componentry in the PS3 so they will obviously be at the mercy of 3rd parties to a certain degree. And besides, what Sony has done is quite revolutionary in the console world - nobody else has done this yet, so don't come off the crybaby unless you can cite an officially endorsed Linux running any better on the competition. - alx242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@mejogid:
It runs via a hypervisor. This hypervisor reveals parts of the hardware as it sees fit. The same is done on the 360 except that the 360 does this even towards their own software developers, hmm trust? There has been no mentioning if the GPU is in fact hidden by the hypervisor or not. The only fact that has been presented is that one of the SPUs is hidden. The GPU is probably not hidden since that would mean that probably nothing would come out of the graphics chips (and people can still run the Xserver). However NVIDIA needs to release a driver that allows exclusive use of the 3D graphics for the chip in the PS3 and builds on the Cell based architecture. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It is NOT Nvidia's responsibility to release drivers for the PS3. This is because Linux on the PS3 doesn't actually run on the hardware as such - it runs on a virtualized layer provided by the hypervisor. This essentially means that an SPU and some RAM remains reserved for Sony's OS, and prevents Linux from becoming a viable gaming platform an the PS3 by allowing only extremely restricted access to the GPU.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"...comes with drivers for most of the important hardware, with the exception of the graphics processing unit, wireless networking (8.11bg), and SIXAXIS motion detection (regular button detection possible via wired USB cable)"
Sigh... I just knew Sony was going to do another half-assed job of it. They want to use Linux to promote their console as a fully-fledged computer, but unless it's going to work with all the hardware, it's not going to take off.
For bonus points, they could have preinstalled it, enabling a new generation of bedroom programmers to make some nice homebrew games. But no, it's Sony. One of their engineering levels clearly came up with the cool idea of allowing or even supporting Linux, and one of their higher level management circles must have neutered it in a paranoid attempt to protect their content.
