- aidanr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Since when is true combat elite open source?? i can't find any news anouncements on the web site about it going open source, marked as inaccurate
things can be free without being open source you know - immrlizard, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Nethack is the most overrated game ever.
- searayman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Lucky for you when i downloaded it a 0.49 a while ago i decided to upload it to mediafire just in case i had to re-download it for some reason fast. So here is the link:

Enjoy! - searayman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17yes, it pretty much is only multiplayer
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17If you run a mac and don't know what to do with a dmg file you are in trouble my friend.
- nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17[buriedcomment]
why do i get the feeling, that right after the article talking about the end of linux gaming, every hardcore linux user spent most of their days trying to find a counterexample...
[/buriedcomment] - molten, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14As far as i'm aware, this game isn't even open source. From FAQ on the forum:
"TCE is closed source. The engine subject has been discussed already, and the developement team has stated several times that they intend to continue in the W:ET engine as a closed source project. If you think you can contribute models/maps/textures of the same quality of the TC:E standards, feel free to contact the team through the Contact Form." - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yeah, and people keep shooting other people with guns and stuff.
- herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12torrent?
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10You need Enemy Territory to play this.

The latest update
http://download.activision.com/enemyterritory/ET_Patch_2_60.exe - hermeneutic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I have been playing this game for over a year. It easily beats any paid software FPS I have played (Counterstrike etc.). The action and intensity are awesome. It's way better than the ET engine that it's based on - the new version .49 is way better. The free climb elements and the patented lean to shoot action make this game interesting and unpredictable. The community is great and tight knit.
Download it, you will enjoy it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Google cache:

The CMS system broke down from the traffic, the site's images are still up and working. - Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Damn and it was even the *nix version! Thank you for the link!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's off and on working, or at least it was when I caught it, it might be completely down now.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Hunt The Wumpus FTW

This is the Windows Version... - Rayor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I thought ET had holes that you fell into and couldn't get out of.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Buelldozer missed the joke.
- dec0ded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://www.truecombatelite.com/ seems to still be working, its the North American site..
- berwiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just hit 'refresh'. For some reason (probably traffic) I get "Error: 400" messages, but if you hit refresh a couple times, the page will show up.
It is annoying, but the site isn't totally down. - V4l1n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A slight technical note, if you have problems with random stops, you may need to disable wallmarks (due to a bug), You can do it either through the menus, or by typing "/cg_marktime 0" in to the console (available by pressing '~'.
The game also needs more memory than is the default for wolfenstein, so I always run it (out of console) by typing "et +set fs_game tcetest +seta seta com_hunkMegs 512 +seta com_zoneMegs 64 +seta seta com_soundMegs 64 +seta cg_marktime 0"
I highly reccomend the .zip for linux, as I couldn't get the .run to work for me. you just need to cd into the enemy-territory directory and unzip the .zip.
You can find all the installers at http://dragons-perch.net/tce/ (an official mirror hosted by me) - tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4TCEstat went opensource. Not TC:E
TCEstat is just some scripts for your clans website to display your in game statistics.
This game is NOT open source and has no plans to be open. This does not make it bad, but it does abuse digg's love of OSS in order to have it reach the front page.
Edit: aidanr beat me too it. - ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A couple of questions:
1) What is "patented" about the lean to shoot? Is it just like every other lean to shoot in every other game? or is there something truly unique. If so, what is it?
2) How limited is freeclimb? Is it essentially like making a lot of surfaces a ladder so people can climb all over now? It sounds neat, but I'm curious how it affects map balance and the logistics of it.
Note: I'm not trying to bash the game or anything, I'm actually really excited about going home and trying it out, I am just quite curious about some of the advertised features. - hermeneutic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Since it is a small group of developers, they actually use a server with shared bandwidth hence the lousy quality. They are trying to raise money to get a dedicated server. This project has been far too low on the radar (no money for promotion) for too long.
Great that DIGG picked this up! - TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Listen, I like Wiili.org too and what it proposes to do, but don't spam.
- robio376, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually they do have a Windows Version...
- metalhead3767, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use this torrent for Linux. The site's downloads are down:
http://liflg-tracker.death-row.org/torrents/true.combat.elite_0.49-english-2.run.torrent - seattle98104, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hooray, now i don't have to spend all day playing tremulous!!
- toodamfast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4its a great game.
- dgh1973, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's kinda why this mod (for wolfenstein: enemy territory) is free to.
- hermeneutic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@molten - You are correct. The source for the game is closed, but the game itself is free, (as is ET). Hence the confusion. Many, many in the community wish it was open source as the latest update for this was over a year late.
But hey, it's free. - intheory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've been playing for just at a year now. TC:E is a good game, similar to CS in a number of ways, but without the "earn money/buy weapons" part. Weapons upgrades are based on your kill ratios, which is a nice element added to the game. If you like CS you'll like this. It is really not at all like Wolfenstein:ET. Other than that there are guns.
.49 is a huge improvement, visually and audibly, from .48. There are some issues, but this is basically beta software and the issues are more gameplay related than performance related, IMHO. I haven't had any issues with stability or sound in .49, after a clean install of .49 and Wolfenstein:ET 2.60. The gameplay issues seem to be related to sights and hitzones. Otherwise Objective and Kills modes seem to be terrific. I haven't played any CTF games so I can't comment on that. There are some server issues, such as being able to find a server running .49, but that will probably get worked out rather quickly.
The developers are very much dedicated to realism, and spend an inordinate amount of time on the weapon models and textures. Dynamic lighting has been added in .49 and it is pretty amazing. I'd agree with other commenters that this game has been too low on the radar for too long. What with BF2142 sucking as much as it does I'll be playing a lot more of this game now. Good to know some diggers will be trying it out. - Foma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ditto. Marked as inaccurate. Free as in beer != free as in speech.
- QBranch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And you can get your Mac version of Wolfie here:
http://returntocastlewolfenstein.filefront.com/file/Enemy_Territory_Mac;44985 - tito13kfm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4digg - Sensationalist headlines, misleading descriptions, dupe central.
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Click it, open it, and drag the contents to the applications folder. Then make a shortcut to it on the dock if you want. Methinks you are new to OSX.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's neither free software nor open source. It's just freeware. Inaccurate title.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Combat:_Elite - friend18, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Are they universal apps?
- custerfluck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Been playing this for a while now only free as in beer.
it would have progressed much faster if it was open sourced. - aviazn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean for Intel Macs? No, sadly, they're PPC only.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The urban settings are pretty cool, and the levels look well designed. And the fact that it was based of Wolfenstein, means that it should have pretty good controls. +digg
- hermeneutic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@intheory are you in a TC:E clan?
I'm in [SeF] - they run .49 on all servers.
There are several modes of game play:
1. Bodycount - kill or be killed
2. Capture the Flag - I don't think this was implemented in .49 but I could be wrong
3. Objective - plant/defuse - pretty much like CS. This is the most common. - GeneralAntilles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sort of reminescent of TacOps on UT99 before it went to ***** except with ironsights (which are always a nice addition). More or less (mostly less) makes up for Red Orchestra having been killed off on Mac.
- BaltazarZoltar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dgh1973 :
Best . . . Reply . . . Ever . . .
(I am not the "omg lolz" guy, but this reply really is hilarious) - friend18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are wolfie and true combat elite universal apps?
- bob12321, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4INTERNAL SERVER ERROR
