- DeathJux, on 10/10/2007, -2/+60Wait a second, FREE Linux distro???
- burkay, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12YESS!!! After all those years, they decided to give it away for free. There are rumors that they will even release the source code of the whole system. Although not believable, it is quite intriguing.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6What about the ones that look exactly like OSX or XP or Vista? If you like one of them, then your argument is false. If you don't like one of them then you hate all OS design and your just, well....not geek enough for digg.
- kaph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The title says, "Free Linux distro targets smartphones". Just in case you missed it. I was thinking the same as DeathJux.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Any supported smartphone, which at this moment, the list is pretty short. But, expect it to grow very, very fast; all they need to do is get Linux to boot on the phone and get all of the require libraries built for that phone's architecture (and most of the "smartphones" are using ARM, so they're already there).
Also noteworthy is Poky's lack of a dialer, so using it as the main OS on your smartphone might not be everything you hoped... - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They're actually all not that different.
Ubuntu's Mobile and Embedded Initiative uses Maemo, Nokia's UI frameworks (think of it as "Mobile GNOME").
Poky uses an interface called "Sato", and most of its distribution is based on OpenEmbedded.
OpenMoko has its own UI interface (which is actually "OpenMoko"), but its distribution (also paradoxically called OpenMoko) is also based on OpenEmbedded.
And the Google Phone will likely use one of the above (and definitely OpenEmbedded).
Things to note: All of the above use GTK+ as their widget system, and applications that run in one framework are generally generic GTK+ applications (unless you want to add UI icons or tray icons, and that's where the different UI APIs break down). It's great to see this many people working on these things together, and things are already "standard enough" that you can port a desktop application to one of the different frameworks in a few hours if you know what you're doing (a bit longer for OpenMoko as right now there's literally no documentation on anything, and you'll spend most of your time reading through the OpenMokoUI library learning things). They all use standard Linux libraries and utilities (DBus, GStreamer, [Maemo uses Cairo, the rest don't for speed concerns], etc, etc), but each is built a little differently for different classes of device: Poky is more suited towards PDAs, OpenMoko is the phone platform, Maemo is for "Internet Tablets" (and very soon, low-powered sub-laptops/UMPCs/MIDs). - theworldisround, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This looks a million times better than OpenMoko's current GUI.
- shad0walker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I personally prefer Openmoko's look, i know they can all be themed but it might have something to do with seeing the screens on an actual phone that tips it for me.
- tonaros, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I just want my Google phone.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3is supporting outlook considered a feature or a bug ?
- n00854180t, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No AT&T and open software > iPhone.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Google's phone is Linux-based and it'll probably 'cannibalize' quite a few phones, Linux included.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I offer site licenses for Slackware as low as $995. It may make sense if you find yourself buying lots of Slackware licenses.
- Borniet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Can it be installed on any smartphone?
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Does FREE mean I don't have to pay for it? Cuz that guy in Chinatown has been charging me a pretty penny for Slackware licenses as of late. I mean, its worth it, but I think it'd be really cool if it were free, you know?
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I will sell them to you for 15% less than your chinatown contact.
- anselmthecrack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Not long and we get that stuff combined with multi-touch x-servers and the ipods are for the museums ;-)
- allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It doees look pretty impressive...
- ekravchenko, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3looks great! Very flashy :)
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1e-d-s (evolution-data-server) does, so "yes" (with the normal caveats applied).
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't care what you think it looks like. As long as it does what I want. (which it does not)
I am not interested in the artistic opinions of every tom, dick and harry. especially when they have no artistic sense to begin with. - Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I really can't believe they're all using Gtk+, I love my Gtk+ and use it whenever i need to do some GUI work, but for the love of God the GObject type system alone probably adds so much cruft that I can't imagine it would perform well at all in an embedded environment. (GObject in my opinion is simultaneously Gtk+'s greatest strength and it's greatest weakness)
- autoatsakiklis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think we need some standard. We have:
OpenMoko
Ubuntu mobile/intel mobile
Poky
Google phone
and they all are different enough and create problems if you want your app to run on all phones. - jm1234567890, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1But does it sync with outlook?
- blackomegax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1looks better than WM6, when can i install it on my HTC dash?
- MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hey, thanks for the info! I'll be sure to do some shopping I've been putting off after I drop my kids off at school on my way to work.
- inspiradventure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0The release looks well but for right now I am going to stick with more established OS releases. Best of the luck to the development team.
- gmgartner, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Nice! I want a smart phone now.
- stevem99, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Rounded title barrrzzzzz went out eons ago with OS 10.5 like.. oh wait.. they are still working on that concept..
- sint4x, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3Graphically EVERY phone is dated other than the iPhone. To me, this is second place.
- yish, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I'm waiting to see 'Free smartphone distro targets linux users'. Until then, not news.
- kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2OpenMoko
- cbeach, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2In the wake of the iPhone interface, these screenshots look incredibly dated.
- Gggarth, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0I want this on my DS ! :)
- nehalp100, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0i hope we'll be seeing this on the iphone
- nanostream, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1You are the man.
- nanostream, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1You are the man.
- Veeoh, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2queue the idiots who will say:-
surely GNU/Linux?
Anal retentive idjits - rento, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2Screenshots not impressive, although I am sure loads of hard work has gone into it. Why would you change it from symbian or even Windows mobile? The only thing you CAN do with it it's saying to your pals "hey look I got Linux on my mobile" (and of course hide the fact that it doesn't work as well as the previous software). The latter is a compelling reason to Digg-it
- Himself, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1iphone users may now choose 切腹
- cbeach, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1Sorry, but "nice screenshots" -- No Linux desktop design or theme has ever impressed me. Dated and amateurish design is not digg-worthy.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+0"A general strike has been proposed for 9/11/07. No work, school or shopping"
Digg is a joke. - anshuman, on 10/10/2007, -17/+1it says free SMARTPHONE linux distro, Quickly name one more distro for mobile...common..quickly...... ..........................
