- M3wThr33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I say ignore the naysayers and the reviews and try it yourself. What's the worse that could happen? You lose a day's worth of time you would have spent playing WOW?
- superultra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Go with Ubuntu instead.
- bebopredux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Linspire may not be "free" in the Linux sense but, give 'em credit. At least they are making Linux a viable alternative for people leery of other Linux distros. I can't deride a distro like this because it gets Linux into hands it otherwise would not. I can't tell my 73 aunt she needs to recompile the kernel to get her nVidia card recognized. "apt get" may be easy for you or I but, others have problems with it. I can understand that. IMO, anyone who takes the step of using Linspire is at least curious about Linux and that folks, is a good thing no matter what.
- kevjava, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't that big a deal -- Linspire doesn't make the bulk of its money selling the distro. They're hoping to get people to buy into the "Click 'N' Run" subscriptions for $40.00/yr.
- ChrisB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you'd rather not go through the checkout process, here's a torrent from the Linspire site:
http://tracker.linspire.com/torrents/linspire_5.0.59.torrent - markman07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I try to use the code I get a message -
"Coupon freespire expired on Aug 30, 2005 11:51 AM PST and is no longer valid" - redwire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not a big Linspire fan but it does give back to the community and it is aimed as a consumer operating system alot more then most distros and it does do a good job of it. Its not Debian, or Suse or Gentoo and its not trying to be, diffrent market aim.
Its a mom and pop OS and a stepping stone into the Linux world that even our more loved distros like Ubuntu can match for ease and familiarity in alot of areas. Yet. :) - DiGiTaLFX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares bout it breaking the whole free ethos. I'm downloading it just because its free right now! Always good to try things out and see whats different about them!
- Asystole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the heads up. I'll be trying this out in VMware.
- prowling-tiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They have been giving free copy's of linspire for a long time. Maybe because no one buys it, Its the worst distro of Linux. The OS may be free, But you still have to pay for individual programs that should be free.
- kindrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dunno. Is it really that bad, folks? Is the support GOOD support? Or do they blow you off? If it's decent support, then it's probably a good deal depending on the price of the subscription. Not all of us are real linux geeks. Some of us are just rooting for it and would love a developed, easy to use linux distro for beginners that works. If this is it, then job well done. Would I rather it be free? Always? Sure. But that doesn't mean it sucks for all of us. Personally I like my SuSE. But I think I'll try this on an older machine anyway.
- bhalo05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Linspire is distribution which tries to improve Linux desktop, something which is much needed. They employ open source developers and give back to the community. They charge for the service, the packaging, and the quality tests, what seems fair and nice to me. It's not my distribution of choice bue I don't see a problem with any of that. Developers need money too, you know...
- A-Dubb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Duel Booting with Linspire is actually incredibly easy if you follow the instructions. I was running this on a tri-boot system recently (XP, OSX, Linspire) and the only reason I got it (Back during another freebie coupon like this) is because I was lazy, and I needed a disrto of Debian for work. When you install, you have to uncomment and add to your sources.list in order to use apt-get. Other than that it has what you need to run a basic system and because it's just a fancy looking Debian, it's not hard to get it up and running for anything and everything you need through apt-get. Removing that Click-n-Run BS can be tedious, but I'm sure somebody out there wrote a guide for it, and because it's debian you can get community support from people other than Linspire.
All in all, it's beginner's distro, so stop raining on these people's parade. Let people try for themselves before you start saying something is crap because, that's just your opinion, not theirs. I recommend this to anyone who wants to try Linux out and see that it's not as scary as they it would be. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool
- VladDrac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone has their favorite distro, but I recommend Suse Professional 9.3

Here's a link to some ISOs:
http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownload/SUSE-LINUX-Professional-Download-46.html - mellowyllw6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's free. How can you complain? I'm testing it out right now.
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://tracker.linspire.com/torrents/linspire_5.0.59.torrent
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0aok
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn someone beat me to it.
- Arkaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, Linspire IS based on Debian.
- ChrisB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also the "freespire" coupon appears to give a $49.95 discount on the boxed version of Linspire, so you get it for $10. Not a bad deal if you were going to buy it anyway.
- EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not a fan of Linspire, but I hope they succeed for the reason of getting Linux into the hands of those who don't care what platform they're using. FWIW, I notice Tiger Direct is selling their house brand machines with Linspire now.
In the meantime, I'll continue using Ubuntu. It best suits my needs. - jhowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Waiting for your download to start.
You are number 382 in line"
Use Bit Torrent, really. - hidrox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just my experience but when I installed linspire 4.5 in my pc, It didnt even loaded my USB mouse, that is why I use PCLinuxOS, the Best linux distro according to me.
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the looks of the message on that site, along with my previous experiences with Linspire, they probably threatened legal action and wrote a friendly message for him to post on the front page of his site. Truth being, if you have free access to click-n-run (originally based on apt-get, iirc) you have 80% of the "amazing and fantastic" features of Linspire. Go use Ubuntu, it's completely free, noob friendly, and even has a GUI based package manager called Synaptic. Screw Linspire.
- codeoptimist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ Same as above for me. OOS?
- mattb5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every couple of months they seem to put out a FREE coupon. I go and download it, burn it onto a disc, and put that disc in my drawer and never look at it again. One of these days I'll have to try it out.
- EricBoyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let me let you guys in on a secret .... linspire sucks. Go and download ubuntu for free.
- outz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They charge $19/yr to 'click install' free software? oh yeh, i'll be trying this one out.
- MegaHyster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^and again....
- mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you must...
http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=linspire - Achra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Minix? Are you serious? I had a killer Minix box back in the day, 4.77mhz 8088 with dual 360k floppy drives.. Oh ya. Irc'n with Bitch-X and read'n mail with "mail". Badass.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what is the best version of linux to get if I wanna double boot it with windows? Also is it easy to double boot it?
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I review software for fairly major sites and I've received free copies of Xandros, Vidalinux and others. All you have to do is ask. However, if you tell them you need a full copy for review that you don't actually write, don't expect to hear from them again.
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The worst Linux distro"? Bwa-hahahah. Linspire is absolutely great for people who aren't techies, but don't want to shell out tons of money for MS products. The CNR warehouse works exactly as advertised - you want software, you click it, they transfer it to you and install it. It's a brilliant concept and one that lots of people are willing to pay a reasonable fee for.
Me, I use Ubuntu. But not everybody feels comfortable with running Linux command-line-style, nor should they be required to. Linspire found a niche and is filling it. Good for them. - scottkuhl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's what I think about the situation:
http://www.geekswithblogs.net/scottkuhl/archive/2005/08/31/PotMeetKettle.aspx - JayFyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They gave it away a year or so ago under the pretense of getting a free pc too. Something to do with a lawsuit against microsoft..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0is this minix? doubt it, therefore LAME OS
- thatedeguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0bottom line... It's $50 worth of software for free. legally.
I'm in.

http://www.distroofthemonth.com - frogstik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you're looking for a great distro of linux, get ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com -- it's great.
- tranix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Great newbie Linux...
http://www.arklinux.org/
also, it's the only distro so far that auto-detects my newer amd64 hardware. Warning, use 'expert' install option if you already have another OS installed on your HD. Otherwise it's trashed. - dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why is it that whenever you have to pay for something, it automatically becomes crap? Some of you people are nothing but a bunch of cheap bastards who hate anyone (except yourselves of course) who try to make money through a capitalistic system.
So quit with your "Linux should be free" mantras where you claim to be upholding an ideal or higher principle. Go ahead and say what you mean...."I'm a cheap piece of crap who steals all my computer parts from work and doesn't want to spend money on anything except comic books...ERRR....graphic novels and cigarettes and cheap booze. Anyone who tries to make money from their products is a capitalist pig who is trying to kill free speech, burn crosses and starve babies!"
Cheap pieces of crap! - mindsinker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Linspire...is crap. it doesn't even come with a compiler built in. Then they want a yearly subscription from you yearly for support, screw that. Linux should be free. Its crap just use another free distro. I'm glad I got my linspire for free when I used it I'd be pissed if I paid for that PoS.
