- boris92, on 12/10/2007, -0/+19I love mine :) and now that asus lets you upgrade the ram, this baby is going up to 2 gigs!!
yay - archiesteel, on 12/10/2007, -1/+16Never mind that it *is* possible to be a geek, earn a living using computers, feed your family and live a fulfilling lifestyle, how do you think you'd be posting your logical fallacies on internet forums if it weren't for geeks and nerds? Do you even realize how *geeky* it is for you to post on this thread under the name "databoy"?
- bballbackus, on 12/10/2007, -5/+19Web 1.0 FTW!
- skeen07, on 12/10/2007, -1/+15Where do I buy this laptop?
- smurf22, on 12/10/2007, -0/+12That is the entire screen.
- Mejogid, on 12/10/2007, -0/+12I think a better question is why are there site without ponies down the side?
- DerogArg, on 12/10/2007, -0/+12Why is there a pony on the side of this site?
- pakkman781, on 12/10/2007, -0/+11Hmm, seems that it didn't work... Oh, wait, I see, it is fueled by actual comment substance.
- opnickc, on 12/10/2007, -0/+11No, the left and right areas which you think are part of the screen are actually the speakers. It's using the entire screen.
- Ansible, on 12/10/2007, -3/+12Its not just the laptop. Linux is cool for all kinds of devices - mobile phones, media servers, routers, etc etc. Windows is simply not as versatile, and its becoming even less so. Vista is requiring more and more high performance hardware, and is clearly designed for new, high performance desktops and laptops. Linux, on the other hand, can run on both old and new stuff, both high power and low power hardware. Having a lot of devices that run on a similar operating system, that I don't have to buy and is constantly updated and enhanced, is hard to argue with.
- boris92, on 12/10/2007, -1/+10you're an idiot, and not just your average run of the mill idiot you're an epic idiot,
- AshamedAmerican, on 12/10/2007, -1/+9your point?

They backtracked on their original position; I have to say, I've been increasingly impressed by Asus lately. - harlowsmonkeys, on 12/10/2007, -1/+7Interesting observation in the headline, although the article itself seems to be focused on the more limited, budget end of the laptop spectrum. How about the high end? Maybe that is the place to concentrate.
Compare to Apple. They are doing extremely well in laptops, with reports of almost 20% share among new laptops, and note that Mac laptops are not budget models. And from laptops, they are spreading to the desktop.
I've seen it happen--someone gets a Mac laptop, because they know it is probably nicer than Windows, but they aren't ready to try to go 100% non-Windows. So, the laptop is where they experiment, because the laptop isn't required to do as much as the desktop, but it is a plus if it can. They like it, and figure out how to do more and more on the laptop, until they reach a point where they can do everything they need on a Mac. Then it is time for the desktop Mac.
Could this work for Linux? - qwertydvorak, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6the screen is the biggest problem i have with the eee pc. if it had at least 1024x768 resolution it would be a great small laptop.
- Kevin108, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6BestBuy.com, Amazon.com, eBay.com, etc. Full list at eeeuser.com
- ashytaka, on 12/10/2007, -0/+6Seriously, don't even talk about advances in computing, it might lead to other people learning about them, making them more popular and more likely to succeed and grow. Lets all just not ever say anything so no advancements can ever be made

- Ellipsys, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5The hype is because its tiny. Go to dynamism.com and look at all the other 12" or smaller notebooks with integrated graphics. 2000? 3000? How much do you want to spend on a subnotebook that is really going to be used for basic computing anyway. The Eee is 299,399,or 499 based on variant. Sure, I'd like a better screen too, and a Core 2 Duo processor, but then I'd be well over $1000 or even $2000. Asus all ready has a 11", $2500 notebook. The price is the key factor here. Its small, its relatively powerful for being so small, its durable, and it comes with linux installed! That's what the hype is about. If you need lots of storage, spend 50 or 100 on a SDHC card and get 16gb of storage that resides in the memory card slot.
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Yea, I thought the same thing at first, but if you look you can clearly see the sides are not part of the screen.
- skeen07, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5Hmm. This may be my christmas present this year. Looks pretty sweet.
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -6/+10you can't have both elitism and popularity. you can not be the "hacky os" and at the same time want to majority of desktop users. you will either be difficult to use or be friendly to use and get all the newbies too.
- edzilla, on 12/10/2007, -1/+5So? whoever said linux fans didn't want newbies?
- dezman2003, on 12/10/2007, -4/+8Nothing against linux but I run a website dedicated to the EEE and the most popular topics are installing XP on it and playing old school windows games.
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4That giant sheet of dot matrix paper isn't going to hold itself up.
- akkibaba, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4A 17 year-old girl from Hollywood, CA (US) who joined Digg on December 8th, 2007.
That explains the high-quality content of your posts. - z0mbie2099, on 12/10/2007, -4/+8Awaiting Ubuntu + Intel results.
- jbmartinez, on 12/10/2007, -1/+5Windows doesn't fix everything automatically. Indeed, my personal experience is that Ubuntu 7.10 is at least as easy to configure as Windows XP (secure wireless networking is one exception).
- neodorian, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3You realize that it is possible for different companies to do different things well. The Xbox360 is a fine console but that has little to do with laptops or OSes or mp3 players or whatever. I assume you're trolling but one company building a decent game console doesn't preclude another group, company of project from building a decent laptop or OS. In fact there are quite a few good laptops, mp3 players, and OSes out there. Luckily for the consumer, this competition leads to lots of choices and improved offerings.
- bdbr, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4This is exactly what I was thinking when someone posted yesterday about how Linux would win the low-end desktop. The low-end portable is a better fit - the hardware isn't going to be all over the map, and people will be satisfied without the huge choice of software and peripherals.
There's a lot of development work going on in the ultra-portable space, and right now a lot of it is with Linux. - aldenhg, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4Ubuntu is still on your hard drive if you use Wubi and it's really not that much different (once you're beyond the boot process) than any other installation of Ubuntu. The only thing you've really saved yourself from is partitioning your hard drive.
All Wubi does is install Ubuntu into a container file. The container file is essentially an extended partition that looks like a really large file to Windows. An entry is added to the Windows bootloader after installation that points to the container file and says "BOOT HERE". Wubi isn't like vitualization where you install and OS into a container file and run it on top of your main OS - it's in a container file, but being booted on it's own.
Answering your original question, Gutsy didn't break anything for me and has great power management. I had to tweak it a little bit to get it perfect, but as of yesterday everything works wonderfully and it was never worse than Feisty. - Mohdoo, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3They let you upgrade it? Source?
- jasmus, on 12/10/2007, -2/+5Gutsy broke a lot of ACPI stuff on my Asus laptop. I had to manually download and install an older kernel to get things like cpu scaling, screen brightness and battery monitor to work again. I believe it's a kernel issue, therefor hard to blame Ubuntu. It's stuff like this that forces me to keep windows installed on my laptop. Congrats to Ubuntu team though, Compiz Fusion works a treat out of the box on my ati 9100igp. Took me forever to get Beryl to run on it.
- inactive, on 12/10/2007, -3/+6Does anyone know if Gutsy adresses the power management issue? I haven't been on top of it really and I would like to know if I can take Linux out of wubi and actually put it on my hard drive
- lordshank, on 12/10/2007, -2/+4The Eee PC is on my ***** list for gadget buzzwords. Put a decent screen and storage in the thing and then maybe it is worth the hype.
- ctfoley, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2good point
- openartist, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2I just saw someone had loaded ubuntu with compiz on it and it seemed to run perfectly. I think you can find a video on youtube.
- exomni, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Maybe because ponies are ***** awesome?
- boris92, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2its just like any other laptop, so only the ram
- voyvf, on 12/10/2007, -2/+4Er, my notebook already runs Linux. No problems here.
- jkendel, on 12/10/2007, -1/+3Just thought I would throw a picture of my setup on here for everyone to judge. eeePC is Great!
http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xpyq0.jpg ... - andycr512, on 12/10/2007, -1/+2Yes, it fixed all major ACPI issues for me except those caused by the nVidia drivers.
- Coldkill, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1Just shut up! All you've done is troll.
- srg13, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1"You also have to take into consideration that its also up to software vendors to start creating installers (with simple instructions) for various Linux variants"
Or just making debs and rpms... Seriously, installing a .deb is as simple as double clicking it, and then pressing the 'Install' button. I haven't used a RPM based distro in a while, but I assume it's the same... - banmaster, on 12/10/2007, -1/+2Any notebook HAS to be able to do 1024 horizontally. If it can't do that then its essentially worthless for pretty much any web-based stuff.
