- sweeneyowns, on 12/19/2007, -1/+46a linux buffet if you will. all i really want is a app where i can input "sudo make me a sandwich" and actually have a sandwich appear on my desktop.
tada! - AntBing, on 12/19/2007, -1/+43Yeah, file this under the "No *****" section.
- JasonCox, on 12/19/2007, -5/+47BREAKING: Expect more applications for Windows and Mac as well.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -2/+36wow breaking news. An OS with surrounding distros/applications and 1000s of developers will release more applications? Please give us insight into your research techniques and methods.
- z0mbie2099, on 12/19/2007, -4/+36No, duh.
- oobuntu, on 12/19/2007, -2/+31a native linux photoshop would suffice...
- legendxx, on 12/19/2007, -1/+29For some reason I thought all linux app developers were going to take the year off.. thank god for this article!
- lolinyerface, on 12/19/2007, -1/+27For 2008 expect more things to happen.
- arjie, on 12/19/2007, -0/+22If you don't do that, you get told to "Make it yourself". However, there is an inherent danger in the command, a bug which randomly transforms the user into a sandwich.
- starsky51, on 12/19/2007, -0/+20http://xkcd.com/149/
- roosterjm2k2, on 12/19/2007, -0/+17If you think 2008 is looking good. You should see 2009...i bet there will once again, be MORE linux apps coming out...
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -3/+18IF only the Gimp was to photoshop what Open office is to Microsoft office...
- LocalScope, on 12/19/2007, -2/+16Expect another 6000 text editors.
- sparrowkc, on 12/19/2007, -1/+14Why does making a sandwich require root privileges?
- shakin, on 12/19/2007, -1/+13"Inferior" is subjective. I use OO Calc instead of Excel because Excel has terrible support for delimited text files. With Calc I can export to text files using any delimiter I want and import using any delimiter, including fixed width columns. Finally, Calc can properly export a CSV while Excel often screws it up.
My use case may not be the same as yours, but I can tell you for sure that Excel is garbage for my purpose. - capiCrimm, on 12/19/2007, -1/+13$ fsck /women && ./configure --ham && make sandwich
- Phair, on 12/19/2007, -8/+18For 2008 expect more Vista bashing FUDs and histerical Ubuntu digg's
- shredswithpiks, on 12/19/2007, -1/+10I dunno what other people are doing with office... but for all my college and work needs, open office works wonderfully and is 100% easier to deal with than microsoft.
gimp on the other hand... ugh... it could easily be a viable replacement to photoshop (at least for what I need) if someone would fix the color management issues - hyperair, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package girlfriend - newwatch51, on 12/19/2007, -2/+11Inferior but good enough. At least for me anyway.
- Zaggynl, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8If you have to ask why you need root priviledges, you're not getting root priviledges!
- tcpip4lyfe, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8In other news the sun will set tonight and come up tomorrow. Some people expect to sleep at night.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -3/+9atlest one thing will be constant both Linux and Mac wont see applications called games.
- camg188, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6That's why I use it for fake image editing.
- polyGone, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6*Cough CS3 *Cough
- cozmoz365, on 12/19/2007, -1/+6With sudo apt-get insall sandwich it will feed it to you too ;-)
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -13/+18it is. They both are inferior to the original.
- PlutoPrime, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6you know man.. I'm too sick and drugged up to breathe right now but I can't stop laughing. Your argument makes this whole article useless :)
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6i got dugg up? I was expecting that comment to go down faster then Paris hilton in her sex tapes.
- Jomwilli, on 12/19/2007, -1/+5This just in, expect more web sites to be built in 2008!
- MattBD, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Hope so, and let's hope for Dreamweaver and Flash as well.
- reginaldino, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4buried for being blatantly obvious
- zmjone2992, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4invalid bash command
- 89vision, on 12/19/2007, -1/+5That would be sudo apt-get install sandwich
- Khoji, on 12/19/2007, -2/+6"The growth of the Linux application space until now has been hampered by a lack of market share,"
Wrong. Linux market share is hampered by a lack of credible applications. There are plenty of excellent applications on Linux but almost all of them are server-side or geek-only. Linux on the desktop as a true alternative operating system will grow if and when you get applications as polished and capable as MS Office (no, Open Office isn't), Photoshop, Final Cut Pro or Coda, to mention just a few random examples. - thcobbs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4And with the compiz/Beryl add on you'll get a materialization animation a-la Star Trek: TNG
- chedabob, on 12/19/2007, -1/+5Looks good. I'd be happy with GIMP if it wasn't for that damn floating interface.
- baalzebub, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3blah, i prefer my Sony Playstation for games...
- wvdavis, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5That was lame. How does 7 or 8 (1 sentence) paragraphs make a story. digg needs a blog section.
- norman619, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5Games? Who plays games?
- djGentoo, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4And we can be sure that the ignorant little Windows fanboys still won't be bothered to actually look for Linux games. They really do exist. This might come as a shock to you, but what can I say? People who stick with misconceptions that might have been true a decade ago don't get very far in life.
- eskizo, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4More and better applications, just be sure you have a partition with window$ for gaming
- theOster, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4yeah i was uncertain as to the future of linux. i heard a rumor that half of the application initiatives were going to close doors and move to .NET.
- beck001, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3You just don't get it... Text editors are like the Light-Sabers of programming. Your hacker skills are not complete until after you create your own text editor. ;-)
- mitchlourens, on 12/19/2007, -2/+5puchase? I no like that.
- inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4you know the little industry that caters to the people who like interactive entertainment and is almost the size of Hollywood.
- stuffradio, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4I read an article a while back stating Adobe was going to make Photoshop native to linux sometime in 08/09
- shredswithpiks, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3umm... what?
- djGentoo, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Wow, the filter got it. For anyone curious about what I said, all I said was "Linsux" over and over. You didn't miss anything if you keep up with Mr. Generic Windows Fanboy's posts.
- newwatch51, on 12/19/2007, -4/+6No, I think Linux will simply fall off the face of the earth, and everyone will use Windows
