- hpfilter, on 12/31/2007, -4/+56The beauty of Linux is that you're not tied to one desktop environment, or even to one distribution. You're free to have the system that works best for you.
Exactly - autoatsakiklis, on 12/31/2007, -8/+49Do you realize that you are comparing desktop environment to an operating system?
- MWeather, on 12/31/2007, -0/+33Then you'll be happy to know that KDE is coming to Windows.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+25I'm waiting for KDE 4.1...
But I know I probably won't be able to and will switch a few days after 4 comes out. - Kragnerac, on 12/31/2007, -1/+23I simply can't wait until January 11.
- Jak08, on 12/31/2007, -0/+22It's because it is my birthday isn't it. I knew there was people who celebrated my birthday just because I'm awesome :)
- Vician, on 12/31/2007, -9/+29While I jump around from OS to OS quite a bit, I've always preferred Gnome's desktop environment when I'm running Linux. There's nothing really wrong with KDE; however, it has too many options and configuration/customization nonsense. Which, obviously, is a point in its favor for the crowd that likes that. But, for me, take that and add it to the fact I dislike most of KDE's own programs, it's just not for me. I'm, most likely, in that small subset of power users who don't like to fiddle, just like things to work and then be on my way. On the other hand, I don't mind using Windows Vista either and prefer using Windows/Linux to OS X, so I'm probably wrong in the eyes of the majority of the Digg user base...
- lickmyback, on 12/31/2007, -3/+22I would like to be a complete fanboy fascist for a second and say that once KDE 4 is released, Linux will have a complete monopoly over sexy looking desktops. Gnome 2.20 and KDE 4 (properly configured) both look way better than Leopard or Vista.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -6/+24dunno why but you seem stupid
- subxero37, on 12/31/2007, -1/+19I agree with the whole K-theme point. It's nice for a few things, but it's a little much when almost every entry in the KDE menu begins with K.
And I like Xfce, although it's been quite some time since I've used it... - hendzen, on 12/31/2007, -12/+30Personally, I can't stand KDE or Gnome. Both seem bloated. And KDE really has to forgo that whole K-naming scheme; it's just plain annoying/stupid. The desktop environment I do like is xfce. Minimal bloat, tiny overhead, basically negates everything bad about CLI linux(not user-friendly) and everything about GUI linux(waste of resources).
- subxero37, on 12/31/2007, -2/+20You give people with the name Steven a bad reputation. (Like myself...)
- phaed, on 12/31/2007, -3/+20Easiest is not always best.
- eFiniTi, on 12/31/2007, -0/+16The general mindset (at least with some of the KDE developers) is to shy away from the K naming scheme. That's why the names sound a lot cooler now, like Dolphin and Oxygen.
- LucasVB, on 12/31/2007, -4/+17Admit it. People just like to fight. And for things as pathetic as possible.
- balazsbela, on 12/31/2007, -1/+13There is
- Ademan, on 12/31/2007, -6/+17If a desktop environment has the power to make you feel stupid you probably ARE stupid...
- Schpariel, on 12/31/2007, -0/+11KDE isn't bloated, it's actually somewhere between Xfce and GNOME in memory usage. The problem is that most distros don't package it efficiently (fitting the entire kdepim suite in 1 package!). You should try KDEmod ( http://kdemod.ath.cx ), a fully-modular, bleeding-edge KDE, it gives you the minimalism of Xfce and the functionality of KDE.
- Elranzer, on 12/31/2007, -0/+10Windows Vista widgits are rip-offs of Mac OS X's Dashboard which in itself is a rip-off of Konfabulator (now Yahoo! Widgits). The KDE widgits are based off the OSX Dashboard scheme and one of the goals was for widgits to be cross-platform compatible between Mac and Linux/KDE.
- Ademan, on 12/31/2007, -1/+11mmm xfce...but really, there's nothing wrong with GNOME or KDE either...
- protium, on 12/31/2007, -1/+10your mom is easier. "oooooh"
- tybris, on 12/31/2007, -3/+12Still not dropping Xfce.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 12/31/2007, -3/+12Well, most of the time it is, but Windows is not easy to use and far from the best.
- skyteria, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9Dugg because Jak08 is awesome.
- marx2k, on 12/31/2007, -2/+10Do you realize that you severely underestimate the knowledge of the average KDE user and overestimate the intelligence of the average WIndows user? KDE targets Linux users, who typically know what a desktop environment is and what an OS is.
- bowens44, on 12/31/2007, -1/+9No it isn't.
- CurtHowland, on 12/31/2007, -1/+8Heck, I've got KDE, GNOME, XFCE, OLWM, WindowLab, TWM and two or three more all available on my Debian system, without conflicts at all. In fact, if I "switch users" using KDM to log in, I can have a KDE session running on tty7, and GNOME running on tty8 at the same time.
I've never understood the whole "desktop wars" thing. Use what you like. - penno, on 12/31/2007, -3/+10my the trolls are out tonight
- natenovs, on 12/31/2007, -3/+9that (properly configured) part is a big problem
- RobotBuddha, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6And it's coming along pretty well from what I've seen. There's even an actual executable that can be used to install the whole thing instead of needing to go through the hoops of compilation.
- oobuntu, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7actually, the K-names can be quite useful sometimes if you want to choose a QT-app. e.g. if i'm running KDE, do i choose Kftpgrapper or Gftp?
it was a long time before i realised Opera was a QT app. Far less bloaty on RAM than firefox for KDE users. - balazsbela, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6"Unfortunately Linux currently lacks widgets completely"
Try the kde app superkaramba, there are a lot of widgets for it. - RobotBuddha, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7Depends what you use it for. I've never seen anything kde can do that windows can't, but for me it usually requires a very large amount of 3rd party programs to be installed first. Kde just does them out of the box on almost any operating system, even windows.
- peestandingup, on 12/31/2007, -2/+7I agree, but its a blessing & a curse.
- blatantninja, on 12/31/2007, -0/+5Great review. As someone that is about to jump into Linux, I've been very confused as to what comes with what, and while I still have some learning to do, this cleared up a lot of questions!
- subgeniusd, on 12/31/2007, -1/+6Please turn off your computer. Forever.
- marx2k, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5I have no problems running Gnome apps in KDE and vice-versa
- Vician, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4Well, as much as I agree with you on Mr. Torvald in general, I suppose he's important simply because the Linux movement needs its figurehead. Microsoft has its Bill Gates, Apple its Steve Jobs, and Linux, wether good or bad, gets Linus Torvald. Then again, I vote we all just sex up Tux more. I wonder what desktop would a penguin use?
- akilleen, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4And that is the beauty of Linux.
- ioannusdeverani, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3@marx2k excellent point
- ha1f, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Have you seen the way they talk about Windows?
- mrBitch, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Windows "just works" ? Do you even use Windows for anything except playing games ?
( disclosure : after 15 years of using Microsoft products to code & develop, I now KNOW Windows does NOT " just work " )
Linux ( and all other *nix OS, including OSX ) will absolutely own and completely dominate all IT based market sectors within the next 5 years.
FTA ( comments section ) - BobCFC says it best ( wrt Open Source ) :
" We OWN the supercomputing space, 7 out of the top 10 supercomputers run Linux. (other 3 run unix). I don't think windows is in the top 50.
We OWN the embedded space, things like Netgear adsl routers/gateways, TIVO, SatNav, Mobile Phones.
We OWN the internet server space, GOOGLE, AMAZON, PAYPAL etc all run on Linux. You use Linux everyday unless you live in a cave.
We OWN the third world. So what if 800million plus run windows, the planet is 6billion+ and growing. You think China is going to be beholden to MS? You think Brazil is going to grow it's fledgling industry (which barely has dialup) on vista? You think Africa can even afford to buy software?
We OWN the new sub $400 notebook space. ASUS eeePC? Prices will only come down further too. When the OS and Office become more than cost of the hardware things change.
We OWN the science space. You think NASA runs on windows?
We OWN the secret space. You think NSA runs on windows?
We OWN the distributed space. PIXAR makes all their films on Linux. You think SHREK was made on windows render farms?
We OWN the geek/early adopter space. Compiz Fusion baby.
Businesses and average Joes are late adopters and are stuck in the world of malware and viruses and DRM and forced upgrade policies and restriction.
But those business who have embraced open-source do not shout it from the roof tops because they would give up their competitive advantage. Why would they find an edge and then broadcast it to their rivals? " - inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3hardware problem...
- Zaggynl, on 12/31/2007, -3/+6fluxbox!
- MattBD, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3That would be really good if that were the case because there's a BBC Radio Last FM widget that lets you listen to BBC Radio 1, 2, 6 Music or 1XTra and scrobble it to your profile and it's currently only available for Mac OS X Dashboard and Yahoo! Widgets. If I could run the Dashboard one (which is apparently the more mature and reliable of the two) in KDE4 that would be great.
- subgeniusd, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Been away for awhile? You can reply directly like I just did to you.....@joannusdeverani :P
- gn0stik, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3You ruined it jackass.
- gn0stik, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2How much ADAM do these Plasmoids cost? And how much EVE does it take to use them? Also, I hope there's an INCINERATE one, so I can torch stupid posters from across the internet.
- MattBD, on 12/31/2007, -1/+3Oops, I completely forgot about superkaramba. Thanks for pointing that out.
- gn0stik, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2The reason there's so much configurability with KDE is that development wise it's very mature. Anyone can choose to ignore the options, however they are there for those who want them. It's still just as stable and user friendly as gnome.
