Get a gparted iso: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ (if your distro has gparted replace this with "Boot up from your Live CD")
Select the harddrive to partition, make sure there's at least 5 GB of space for Linux (10 is recommended)
Boot from the Live CD of your choice.
Install.
Reboot, see if both operating systems are recognized.
If preferred, change "/boot/grub/menu.lst" and set the Windows partition to "makeactive". This means you boot to Windows, unless you specify Linux.
The other way around is a little harder, because Windows sucks at fancy pants "leaving the MBR intact" and "not sucking".
After installing Windows, boot from a Live CD.
Open a terminal, type "sudo grub"
-> root (hd0,0)
-> setup (hd0)
-> quit
-> exit
Boot into delicious restored GRUB.
