- saturn5, on 04/25/2008, -2/+7Last time I checked Linux was already very popular on servers. But have fun with your "Ubuntu server revolution" anyway.
- dualscreenman, on 04/25/2008, -1/+5These points may be advantageous to Ubuntu in the long run and may or may not help it gain more server market share, but they aren't strong enough to be considered a "revolution". Large improvement on Ubuntu's part would be considered a revolution. Mistakes by competitors aren't.
Oh, and Vista has nothing to do with servers, afaik. - Dunnix, on 04/25/2008, -3/+7"1. The Windows Vista Debacle:"
Thought we were talking servers here... Lame - Planets, on 04/25/2008, -1/+4Even after reading your article, I don't see why it starts today, or tomorrow or next month, or 5 years ago.
- skrowl, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3Linux zealots NEVER pass up a chance to hate on Vista. You know that.
- Philluminati, on 04/25/2008, -1/+3What the article says is possible I guess but I'm not entirely convinced. For example number two says "Both Linux providers bet heavily on the server. Red Hat completely ignored the desktop for years. Novell had some success on corporate desktops, but continues to ignore consumer systems."
With the nature of open source and high interoperability why would Ubuntu's desktop popularity overwhelm corporates into choosing Ubuntu for the servers rather than Red Hat or Suse? Is Ubuntu server additions as mature as Red Hat systems? You know one of Red Hat's strengths is not just an OS with support - but if you write an enterprise Java server (think middle tier stuff) they will support the whole software stack as well (so Tomcat, Apache etc).
The "server consolidation" is an interesting point but again, I'm not really sure how convinced I am. People may offer it to stand out from the competition but that doesn't guarantee it success. What Ubuntu has going for it, is the large amount of popularity on the desktop. Using Ubuntu everywhere may be appealing, so it could happen. I'm 50 / 50 on this one! - weizbox, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1also... why would you even want to use it on your server if you already said that 'Vista Server is so much better'..... why would you want to, in your opinion, downgrade? doesn't seem to make much sense...
- weizbox, on 04/25/2008, -0/+1what printer do you have?
If you manage a server it shouldn't be too hard for someone with your skills to get it working ;) - weizbox, on 04/25/2008, -1/+2Revolution? Some people try to make the littlest things sound so epic.
No more sensationalism, please.
