- MaHaGoN, on 11/20/2007, -0/+52Dugg for not only being the RC1 of KDE4, but also for not linking to some crappy blog.
- SBelyea, on 11/20/2007, -1/+29I'm really excited about Plasma (and quite honestly about the revamping of the icon set with the Oxygen icons) but I really hope that KDE remains as lightweight as possible. Personally, I'm quite alright running Xfce or using Fluxbox to improve my system responsiveness, but reading the comment about running KDE 4.0 on a P3 600Mhz box gives me hope that this new release will be relatively streamlined. Can't wait until the final version comes out (and until Amarok for windows comes out!)!
- jdhore1, on 11/20/2007, -0/+25QT4 is a lot more streamlined and optimized than QT3 is/was so i wouldn't be surprised if it ran decently on a P3 600. I'm personally a GNOME fan, but KDE4 is looking better and better every day.
- intent, on 11/20/2007, -1/+21I'm really excited about being able to run KDE and K programs on Windows and Mac OS X.
- basic0, on 11/20/2007, -4/+24How do you have a news release about a GRAPHICAL user INTERFACE with no images of the thing?
- GMorgan, on 11/20/2007, -0/+16Because it isn't just a GUI. It's a desktop environment, with bells and whistles. The interesting parts of KDE4:
-Aren't necessarily graphical.
-Aren't related directly to the user.
-Their only interface is in terms of application programming.
I can understand the confusion but KDE is much more than a few windows. Personally I'm most hyped about phonon which has nothing to do with graphics. - ostracize, on 11/20/2007, -1/+11Additional generic digger compliment!
- springo, on 11/20/2007, -1/+10We don't care that you don't care, so now please shut up.
- ru7hl3ss, on 11/20/2007, -2/+11So why bother posting, mate?
- jadrian, on 11/20/2007, -0/+7For those who don't want to install the release candidate, they can test it by running it from a CD.
OpenSUSE Live CD with KDE 4:
http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ - Dementual, on 01/27/2008, -0/+6That's great and all, but I'm waiting for something pretty to look at; where's that?
- Yogitw, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7Is there a windows version? (for serial, I thought there was going to be a port, and I'd like to play with it)
- GMorgan, on 11/20/2007, -0/+6I don't think there will be Windows ports of the API's until we see them reach some sort of stable release (some API's aren't even finished yet remember, two of them won't be seen until 4.1).
Remember early Windows releases will basically be a run time DLL (or maybe a few DLLs) that you drop into System32. Then it's a question of compiling applications against them.
The really exciting thing is this is going to be a fully portable API, without reservation, rather than a directly shell replacement (which is less interesting TBH). Also KDE continue to make programming easier. There's a reason a lot of people who use Gnome run KDE apps, those apps are simply better because the APIs have (in the past and now again in the future) been superior and made people's lives easier. - xkero, on 11/20/2007, -3/+8I hope we see Kubuntu packages for it. The Kubuntu team disappointed us big time with beta4!
- Visceral, on 11/20/2007, -1/+5The desktop environment itself will not be ported, the qt libraries will be so certain qt apps like Amarok, etc, can be cross-compiled to run on windows.
- baalzebub, on 11/20/2007, -9/+13groovy...
- Xsecrets, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4not all they completely missed the beta4 which was the last one before this one. we'll see If they catch this one.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -1/+5YES
- HonoredMule, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Agreement and reiteration!
...expanded with commentary. - RobotBuddha, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Good news, instructions are up at http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde4-rc1.php
Bad news: The packages are badly broken. kde-svn script is still slowly compiling away instead. - balance07, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4try again... there are no screenshots of 4.0 RC1 there
- univers3man, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Awesome. I'm waiting on reinstalling linux until this comes out, and it looks like it will be worth the wait.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Yeah, especially Kontact and KOffice (IMHO). Kontact stores mails in maildir format wich makes it basically Spotlight and Time Machine compatible by default (someone just needs to write a Spotlight Importer for maildir files, but no further changes are required).
- AnthonyA7, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Try using a search engine. There's a good one called "Google".
- dualscreenman, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4aseigo.blogspot.com

The developer's blogs contain lots of nice pics. I found most of my pretty pics through digg though. - Eldrick, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Is there any way to just get the wallpapers that we saw not too long ago on Digg?
- cquilliam, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Keep an eye on the kubuntu page, instructions have been posted for all the betas and prior, i'm sure they will post something soon.
- cyberwiz01, on 11/21/2007, -1/+4I have one of your kind in my front yard.
- scingram, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3Link to the wallpapers in downloadable form.
http://dot.kde.org/1195329269/ - NJHewitt, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Yep, those packages are available now :)
- Maegashira, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3actually there is a project assigned for that. you can visit it here and check for updates: http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Windows
doesn't seem to be ready though, but maybe next year? who knows. - mdshort, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Thats why we have VritualBox, Qemu, VMWare... you don't even have to waste time installing, you can run the livecd's straight from the virtual machines.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Wait for KDE 4.1. KDE 4.0 is meant to be a stable, but not so polished foundation for the KDE 4 release cycle.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2I will try it out because of the hype.. But I am loyal to XFCE..
- oobuntu, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2get reporting those bugs people in in for the 4.0 release!
here's a good kde bug summary page
http://bugs.kde.org/weekly-bug-summary.cgi - Farticus, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2I hope it works correctly with screen rotations on table PCs, the current version does not do a complete job and you need to hack things yourself.
- ldog, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Are you trolling, or can you tell me the name of the gnome applications that are better than k3b and amarok?
- grexeo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1How do you move Plasmoids?
- richbradshaw, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1I tried them out, they are borked though - some work OK-ish, most isn't great... Have a look...
http://digg.com/linux_unix/KDE_4_0_RC_1_running_on ... - PorcupineTree, on 11/20/2007, -1/+2I personally love KDE, although I'm unable to use Linux because it doesn't support my wireless card, even with NDISwrapper or Madwifi. KDE 4 will be released for Windows, although I've had problems installing the beta versions and haven't been successful (however, I'm a complete noob to this sort of thing). The instructions can be found at: http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/KDE4 ...
- bhigh24, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1http://www.kde-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=1x2 ...
not sure if this has what ur looking for, but there are alot of good wallpapers here. - jshabad00, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1When it is posted... it isn't there yet. 3.96 is what you want.
- ajforgue, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Yes.
- SteveMax, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1It's there, KDE-Four-Live.i686-0.7.iso
- jesusfranco, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde4-rc1.php
Works on Kubuntu, Ubuntu, and every other Ubuntu spin off, just make sure its Gusty. - angers, on 11/20/2007, -1/+2openSUSE Live CD for those of you that are interested in trying it out. there's also a screenshot
http://home.kde.org/~binner/kde-four-live/ - PorcupineTree, on 11/21/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I decided to give openSUSE a shot after I'd already had my wireless card installed. From what I've heard, D-link has released specifications on most of their cards for Ubuntu 7.10, with the expection of the one found on my specific card.
- inksmithy, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Wireless cards cost so little today that one particular card not working isn't really an excuse not to use it anymore. Go out and grab one after you have done a little research and get stuck in!
- clickwir, on 11/20/2007, -1/+2It's hard to judge how well KDE4 is when all I can see is the Live CD's. The last one had the task bar in the middle of the screen but you couldn't click on it there, you had to have the mouse at the bottom. Now the bar is at the bottom but things aren't on the bar. Ok, well the K is on the bar but it's not in the corner and the "tray" icons are at the top of the screen and the time finds a new home on the screen each time I reboot it.
Progress, yes..... perfection, no. Maybe it's just the live cd to blame but I'd really like to play with KDE 4 without dedicating my system to it. - knutert, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1The site seems to be down. Anyone got direct links to torrents?
