- jenshik, on 12/24/2007, -5/+38Wow, it has Ubuntu AND Firefox 3 in the title.
When I wake up, this story will be all over the front page. - martalli, on 12/24/2007, -2/+22Bryce would be happier with firefox if he realized he isn't paying for it, and no one is forcing him to use the beta software. With all the spelling errors, he can hardly be using firefox, or his post would have been glowing red as he typed it...
- armo, on 12/24/2007, -2/+18No, not just you, I'm pleased to say it is a lot faster. I for one was fed up of seeing:
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."
on the comments pages here. Now I just need my extensions back... - sirhomer, on 12/24/2007, -0/+15You mean I have to manually download software in Windows? Are you serious? You expect my grandma to do that? No wonder Windows users get so many viruses and spyware. Sorry I don't think Windows will ever ready for the mainstream until it gets proper package management.
- Argus2m, on 12/24/2007, -3/+16Is it just me or is FF3b2 running faster then FF2
- Mejogid, on 12/24/2007, -3/+13Guys... he just copied HungarianHuman's epic fail:
http://www.digg.com/software/Mozilla_Announces_Wea ... - leszek, on 12/24/2007, -1/+10Don't forget that maybe some slowness was caused by your extensions which are disabled now.
- zwaldowski, on 12/24/2007, -1/+10These instructions are NOT good for Ubuntu updates.
- Remmy, on 12/24/2007, -5/+12Please don't drink and digg.
- Balla79, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6You have to. You noticed the "sudo" before the commands?
- sqrt7744, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6They shouldn't be putting the directory in /usr/lib but instead /opt/firefox3 or similar. All you really have to do though is extract the archive somewhere, say in your home dir, and double click the firefox icon. It really isn't tricky and doesn't need any how-to or guide.
- MWeather, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6You can install ff3 and ff2 side by side. The article tells you how.
- arekarek, on 12/24/2007, -0/+6Man. This is beta. Meant for testing. There's no reason to put it anywhere outside /home.
I just downloaded it. Backed my old profile up. Unpacked. And double clicked "firefox". Anyone who needs tutorials to do such things shouldn't be using betas. - sonicjosh, on 12/24/2007, -0/+5What I Do:
Download
Extract
Double click 'firefox'
Run
Later... create launcher - Vektuz, on 12/24/2007, -0/+5These instructions might wreck future updates. Extract it to another folder instead - it runs fine out of any folder, really.
- sirhomer, on 12/24/2007, -0/+4It's good practice to place all manually installed packages in the /opt directory... apt-get pretty much ignores that directory, so it's a good way to avoid possible problems in the future especially with upgrading.
- andycr512, on 12/24/2007, -0/+4No, actually, we don't. Download beta, extract, double-click firefox. This is a method that keeps it up to date. If you're a GUI freak, you can do it all without touching a command line.
- sonicjosh, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3How to do it in linux:
1. Download
2. Run
3. (optional) Create Launcher - Balla79, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3In Linux there are many ways to skin a cat. You don't have to do exactly what Steve or whoever your "God" is.
- cawpin, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3Or you could just change the location of your Firefox profile with the built in profile manager.
firefox -ProfileManager
The capitalization matters.
I haven't tried it in gutsy but apparently Ubuntu 7.10 broke the link so you have to use: firefox -a asdf. - kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+3I get that error sometimes too with FF2, The only extension I run is Adblock plus.
- inactive, on 12/24/2007, -2/+5Cha-ching!
- motang, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2I have been running FF 3.0 Beta 2 on my laptop for almost a week now on Ubuntu 7.10 and I must say way better than FF 2.0.x. It is integrated very well into the GNOME desktop environment, look great, and is fast. I am also loving the new smart bookmarking system.
- armo, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4That depends what you want really. Personally, I like having separate launchers for Firefox 2 and the development version.
- Phocion55, on 12/24/2007, -2/+4This has all the characteristics of HungarianHuman or whatever his name is.
- mercurysquad, on 12/24/2007, -1/+3It's the other way round. It's easier to have FF3 separate from FF2, this guide shows you how to replace (upgrade) FF2 with FF3 by creating a symlink.
- xspinkickx, on 12/24/2007, -0/+2the way that should of been done unarchive the contents to /opt/ folder, and then depending linked your plugins frolder from the ubuntu install to the one in your opt folder, and if need be link the executable to your /usr/bin folder, either rename the firefox executable in /usr/bin/ or call the linked executable firefox3
The instructions provided in the article are bad. - wiihuck, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1followed word for word and it didn't work. would love for it to work.
- BrotherGA2, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1I'm a mac user, but I nearly prefer Linux.
You are just a troll though. - sonicjosh, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1This is MUCH fater on Linux than FF 2.x.x.x; much better with digg comments also ^_^.
- glinsvad, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1Here’s to alcohol, the cause of - and solution to - all life’s problems. Well, that and spending too much time on digg
- ninja0, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1you could copy the plugin folder to the new firefox3 folder :P
thats what i did, all works great. - yogiincork, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1lool ;)
either he is a genius or a retard.... - tvanwyk, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1But who uses Totem? That plugin is a useless piece of crap.
Use Mplayer. I don't know how it works with Firefox 3 specificclly, but anything has to be better than Totem. - ninja0, on 12/25/2007, -0/+1firefox is also big on windows too you know. Of all the mac user I know of (which isn't a lot by all means), they prefer safari.
But I still like my firefox, running beta 1 right now actually. - tvanwyk, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Sudo is not admin.
Ubuntu fanboys don't realize that, apparently. By default, Ubuntu doesn't even have the root account enabled. Which is incidentally quite dumb, but that's another topic entirely. - bariswheel, on 12/24/2007, -1/+2http://www.ubuntugeek.com/howto-install-firefox-3- ...
- tvanwyk, on 01/11/2008, -0/+1Hmm. Guess you ***** up.
- inactive, on 12/24/2007, -3/+3It's a shame you were apparently just copying some other reject's comment, because I was about to say...
................. ,,,,,,,,,,,,, ;;;;;;; :::: """""""
Punctuation marks. Feel free to use them in your post. - kazamx, on 12/24/2007, -2/+2Upgrading is easy. The bit that needs a guild is making sure you have 2 versions of FF, one standard and one beta.
- aldableep3, on 12/24/2007, -2/+2heh.. so true..
- netdroid9, on 12/24/2007, -4/+4Odd, never seen that kind of error before 0.o. Could be a Greasemonkey script acting up...
- grilkip, on 12/25/2007, -1/+1Nah, they're talking about PrettyMuchBryce who copied a comment from a more or less infamous troll.
- bsmang, on 12/24/2007, -1/+1Interesting. Mine magically updated to beta 2 on its own. I didn't even realize it until I just looked up and saw that the window label now says 2 instead of 1 on it. Those darn kids.
- specialK16, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1Really? Well I'm moving now. The reasin I always use Opera is because Firefox usually takes a while to startup on my ubuntu machine.
- MBHoy, on 12/24/2007, -3/+2Look through the rest of the blog, it's all original content too. I put effort into my posts. This is NOT a copy, in any way, shape or form.
- cawpin, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1Hey, I'm gonna submit a duplicate too and then put it in the comments of the original.
- frontporsche, on 12/24/2007, -2/+1Oops, this was meant to be a reply to PJBovoNox.
- inactive, on 12/24/2007, -3/+2Symlinks...
- mahler, on 12/24/2007, -3/+2"Now I just need my extensions back..."
In the old days, I used to love testing beta-versions.
But now I've gotten attached to my add-ons, and I don't want to switch until I get all of them working.
Too bad FF2 and FF3 use the same location to store your profile.
This means I can't install them both on the same machine.
Does anybody know an easy workaround for this? -
