- rot97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7wow ive used this since i startered using firefox, but i didnt know i could write a blog post about it and submit it to digg.
- blackbelt88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5if you just start typing, as long as you haven't selected another text field, firefox will automatically start searching.
- jimmy8091, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Blog spam. Why not link to the FireFox documentation?
- danielrm26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, between holysaiyan1's and harmlessinc's comments, I think I'm going to admit that I was in the wrong.
My idea was simple -- good content should not be judged according to its source. I viewed this place like a garage sale, or an art expo. It's a place to come and look for things that catch your eye. It doesn't matter where the content comes from -- only whether or not it's useful.
I view blog-whoring as a concerted, constant effort to get hits on a blog (usually for ads), such that when the person posts their links or whatever -- *almost nobody gets anything from the content that was posted." It's there to flame and get hits. It's there to troll and get hits. It's just trash.
As such, I didn't see how posting valued content could ever fit into this category. If people like it, then it shouldn't matter where it comes from. It's a place for putting up content -- period.
But I now see that I missed a key point. That point is that the source *does* matter. If someone submits their own links it AUTOMATICALLY diminishes the value of the content. It's automatically considered suspect simply because it's being "pushed" by the source.
I can see that, and the last poster was correct that I should have already known this was the key point here -- not the content itself. It's unfortunate, but it's true.
So, I offer my apologies for "whoring". I may post an occasional link to my own stuff in the future, but I won't be using Digg to get reflections on my stuff the way I was before. I guess if I want something to be read I'll make it more official and submit it to a larger site the way conventional writers get their stuff published.
So, to harmlessinc, who ultimately turned out to be right, my apologies. It can assure you the goal was not to "spam"; and while I still don't feel my content was negative in any way, I do acknowledge that the method for delivery was ... suboptimal. :)
Later,
-Daniel - duelboot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You can also use ctrl-F. It'll do the same AND it will stay at the bottom of Firefox and not disappear like the '/' option does.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11I don't have any idea why I didn't know this before, but danielrm26 only ever posts links to his own blog.

Blog spam, marked as such. - zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2' does the same thing.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"people here on Digg are just too paranoid about Spam" - too much time reading the queue can do that.
"They shout that at everyone who posts his/her first post." - some do sure, I try only to shout at people who have 25+ posts all from their own site... like danielrm26 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny, this "cool feature" is actually fairly hated in Firefox user circles because well, it's annoying and not very convienent. Seriously, linking to your own blog is bad karma. It's called blog-whoring, and nobody likes it. (proof that the / key is nothing new or exciting http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=389071& and others, do a search)
Quit whining about it and just suck it up that you were a blog-whore. It's about as annoying as the people who submit the same Google Video or YouTube clips day after day, or submit the same politicrap sites all the time. Don't be such a noob. - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You point out an important point -- that using / to search will make the search bar disappear. I tend to use / to search because it is easier to type than Ctrl+F, but it's annoying that it disappears after a couple seconds of inactivity.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Digg is dangerous when there are only a few sources "
Judging by your submissions there is only one site, that's my primary complaint. If digg is so great, and you want to make it so much better try this, just once, link to something that isn't your own website. - popophobia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Agree with danielrm26, people here on Digg are just too paranoid about Spam. They shout that at everyone who posts his/her first post. Crazy.
Anyway, nice find, I didn't know that. - danielrm26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To be fair, I think I have two or three in there that aren't from my site, including "Why The Future Doesn't Need Us", and "Hope Is Our Last Defense" -- both are world-class pieces, but have been submitted to Digg before. I have gone to submit stories *many* times only to find that they've been submitted multiple times already.
But yeah, I suppose I could find my alltime favorites from my favorite authors and resubmit them (to get them in circulation again). Perhaps I'll do that. Hell, I was actually thinking of a blog post a while back where I made a list of all the "must reads" for geeks. "Why The Future Doesn't Need Us" is at the top of the list, by the way.
Anyway, I could make such a post and then submit it here, but you probably wouldn't appreciate that too much. Or perhaps I should do both -- make my post *and* submit the links seperately. Hmm.
Anyway, I think your heart's in the right place, you just have me all wrong. I enjoy reading, writing, and sharing ideas. Digg is a place to do that. Submitting your own ideas/tips shouldn't be discouraged unless it is negative in some way. Once someone crosses the line into spamming I agree they should be rocked, but I don't think I've come anywhere close to that line.
Cheers,
-Daniel - danielrm26, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Spam implies negative, dude. I'd venture to say that nothing I've posted here has bothered anyone. It's informational, and I don't make money off of my site. If you don't like my content then don't read it. But claiming someone is "spamming" just because they link to their own content is ludicrous.
This site is for posting (hopefully) useful content for others to read. It's stupid to claim that someone should not be able to post said useful content just because they happened to write it.
Anyway, I appreciate you trying to keep things clean here. I hate spam as well, but what I'm doing *is not*, in my opinion, spam. If you guys disagree please post and set me straight. If enough of you read what I've posted thus far and think it's crap, I'll stop doing it.
Cheers,
-Daniel - roostishaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, that's wierd. I discovered this last night when I though I had the terminal in 'focus'.
Cool shortcut. digg - traicer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1nice find. i didnt know that
- danielrm26, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Why not link to the FireFox documentation?"
Because I wanted people to come visit my site and make me rich. Oh, wait...I don't have any ads on my site, and I don't sell anything... Damn. I need a new business model.
Actually, it's because people will remember this more than they will being tossed a list of 50 cool things you can do with Firefox. I know that about people because I'm one of them. Relax, dude. - danielrm26, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Rot97,
Now you know. Digg could use more of this type of thing, actually. There is tons of cool stuff that each of us know, yet very few people actually put down on "paper" what thoughts they have. Too often they assume that everyone already has written about something, or it's already common knowledge.
Well, Digg provides the perfect outlet for people to put forth their own thoughts on things. If it's genuinely informational and not linked to some money generating system, people will appreciate the tip.
I get tons of good information off this site, and I care more about the content then I do the source. So if you have some other cool ideas, thoughts, or ways of doing things, feel free to write them up and submit them for scrutiny. If people don't find it useful they'll ignore it, and if they do you'll get a few diggs.
Give it a shot; Digg is dangerous when there are only a few sources and everyone just crosslinks to the same stuff. Don't be afraid to make your own content and see what others think of it.
Cheers,
-Daniel - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I didn't know that either. Cool digg.
- muirhejs2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0very nice little tip +digg
