- schestowitz, on 12/20/2007, -3/+29Very nice alternative to all those bash scripts and cron jobs. It looks very polished.
- raynevandunem, on 12/20/2007, -0/+10Yes, just with a more basic GUI.
Someone might construct a more Time Machine-like, customizable interface for it (or for flyback http://code.google.com/p/flyback/ ) in the future using GTK+/OpenGL/Cairo+SVG/Clutter ( http://clutter-project.org/ ), but I'm not holding my breath. - sjmulder, on 12/20/2007, -1/+9Now it just needs to be a three-click instead of a three-page solution: right click a disk, click 'use as backup disk', click 'comfirm'.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/20/2007, -2/+10That look slick. I never thought about getting a huge drive just for back ups.
- awhiteflame, on 12/20/2007, -2/+9Or Time Machine.app.
- aldenhg, on 12/20/2007, -1/+8I'm continually appalled at how few people have good backups. I make an entire image of my hard drive every few weeks and I save really important stuff in a special gmail account. I know that this isn't a perfect system, but I see people on a near daily basis whose computers have crapped out for one reason or another and end up paying out the ass for data recovery. Easy, no-hassle backup solutions like this (or like TrueImage Home on the Windows side) are the only way your average Joe will back up anything.
- limbikity, on 12/20/2007, -2/+8right. so this is pretty much the linux version of timemachine, correct? (i'm not saying either way about which came first/is better/pwns more)
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5What? No floppy RAID?
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5You're definitely on the right track, but with that you're still hiding it behind a contextual menu.
- antitab, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5This is, quite literally, Time Machine sans stars. The mechanism is exactly the same: hard-links to files that have changed since the last backup. A slick GL interface integrating Tracker or Beagle to search the backup archive would be pretty simple to create and directly imitate Time Machine. Not bad. As a Mac user keeping close tabs on the rest of the *nix world, it will be interesting to see where this goes.
- deformation, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4aha, and what launchpad has to do with backing up your system?
- fatsobob, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Though this program is available to be used with other distros besides Ubuntu, it has some conflicting deps and was CLEARLY made to run with Ubuntu.
- yetAnotherCroc, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4Wow, that looks nice
I'm getting it right now! Have been looking for a good backup solution for my ubuntu box - inactive, on 12/20/2007, -6/+9Dude - no one gives a *****....
- pierrelourens, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3Good solution to the back up problem plaguing so many people :)
- hyperair, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3The futzing around the terminal can be done via GUI just so you know. It's just not shown in the article.
- guyvdb, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3and how many kidneys did you sell to pay for that?
- Hermmunster, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Doesn't work for me. Followed the instructions to the letter. Guess that's why it is still in beta.
- raynevandunem, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Not to sound like a "me-too" type, but there is an unofficial project to make a home server operating system based on Ubuntu. http://ubuntuhomeserver.org/
I don't know if they've gotten off the ground with their idea since they started earlier this year, but the idea for a home-oriented server system that can handle backups of data from the numerous computing devices in the home area, whether it is based on Windows or on Ubuntu(/other *nix), is promising.
I hope, personally, that Apple releases an "iServe" that can serve as a compliment for Time Machine next year. Such a device has been requested since at least 2002. http://notd.blogs.com/notd/2002/11/xserve_minus_is ... http://www.newrowley.com/2006/12/an_apple_home_ser ... - CookieOfFortune, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1One should cut them some slack, they don't even have support for KDE.
- TannerLD, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I installed this once (long ago from the thread in the ubuntu forums), and it successfully backed things up, but I never could figure out how to restore things. I hung out in the irc channel on freenode, but after a bit that died. Not sure if there is any development on this anymore.
- simd, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Was the plug-in produced by Microsoft?
- salinemist, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1You're also at the bleeding edge of what MS gets "just right".
- axcess99, on 12/20/2007, -4/+5And lacking specialized UI's for database type files like storage for Mail.app Addressbook.app and how Apple deals with those in a friendly way.
Imagine trying to recover an email for thunderbird by having to guess which email file or worse, only having the option of restoring an entire mbox file. No clue if the email is in it, very hard to dig the email out and merge it into your current one etc...
correct me if i'm wrong and TVault does this nicely or TMachine doesnt
I'm not knocking TV at all, looks good - jcaino, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Might have to give this a try. Tried snapshots with FreeBSD 6.2 but timezone change + custom software = no fun + lots of manual file checks.
- prammy, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1So was deluge and gtkwifi if I recall correctly. Give them some time, I am sure we will see releases for other distributions.
- angrykeyboarder, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Yeah, who needs a backup drive. Just back up to 350 DVDs (one at a time...).
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I won't argue it takes extra steps, but most of the steps is just the initial installation/setup process. Since it doesn't come with the OS by default, it can't be as simple as 3 clicks. After initial configuration, the process is much simpler.
- LinuxGalore, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Ive been using kbackup for two years now, very easy to use
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php/KBackup?c ... - shownoregrets, on 12/20/2007, -0/+0http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=474973
they had this a while ago - soso33, on 11/17/2008, -0/+0

- partsguy74, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1Something as basic as a backup utility should come with the OS. That's my point. Apple / Next took a very robust, but very technical server OS, and turned it into a "grandmother friendly" OS. Linux has even more going for it, in terms of stability, developer knowledge, etc. Canonical and other companies utilizing the Linux Kernel need to bring in usability experts. Hell, hire some inexperienced grandmothers and grandfathers, sit them in front of Ubuntu and actually listen to their feedback.
- renegadeafk, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1are you retarded?
- TomKarpik, on 12/20/2007, -4/+3No, this is a three-page Linux beta solution, complete with futzing around on the command line and customizing a bunch of garbage in order to make it work.
Time Machine is a "plug the drive in" solution. - mercurysquad, on 12/20/2007, -3/+2Yup I have a cron-based subversion script which backs up the entire home folder. TimeVault seems good but the interface is still a bit complicated for your average grandma.
- TomKarpik, on 12/21/2007, -2/+0Wonderful.
Call me back when I can just plug the drive in. - partsguy74, on 12/20/2007, -4/+2While I would love for Linux to become a viable alternative O.S., this program proves that Linux needs a "Steve Jobs" equivelant. 3 pages of instructions to do what OSX can do with a couple clicks of the "Mighty Mouse". Now, I say this while typing on a Vista laptop, which also has a decent backup utility which takes about 3 clicks also.
- rotten777, on 12/20/2007, -4/+2No source for the latest version? What do us AMD64 users do? :(
- stefan24, on 12/20/2007, -4/+1this is just time machine without the glitz?
as amazing as spaces in mac os x 10.5 ? - kalmi, on 12/20/2007, -5/+1compiz + timevault => time machine?
Wow would start then... - Soulhuntre, on 12/20/2007, -12/+7I use Windows Home Server for this on a 2TB drive array with a plug-in that backs up the critical bits to Amazon's S3 cloud. Its fast, integrated into the OS and the hardware and kicks ass. The headless box I run it on has a nice LED that lets me know the health of the drives and all my backup jobs.
Sometimes, MS gets it just right :) - Kyouto, on 12/20/2007, -7/+1"Launchpad is offline for scheduled maintenance. We should be back soon."
Not something I wanna see when I'm doing something as important as backing up my system.... - postaldave, on 12/20/2007, -17/+5get a real cpu?
