- dcbrown07, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26The FireFTP Firefox add-on is another you may want to check out
http://fireftp.mozdev.org/ - fjc8, on 10/10/2007, -4/+23Runs on OS X, too.
Wonder if they fixed the slow SFTP performance? I'm lucky to get over 100kbytes/sec with FileZilla 2, but have no problem transferring 500+kbytes/sec with WinSCP. - TheNik, on 10/10/2007, -4/+20FileZilla was actually started in 2001. The Mozilla group wasn't around until 2003.
- goblindegook, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15The Mozilla engine and mascot both predate 2001, though. In spite of that, I'm convinced the reference is to Godzilla rather than anything else.
- Glimps, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15There's been a port of fileZilla for over a year now on Linux. Wasn't exactly the same, but it had the same logo and most of the functionality.
- n8willis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I definitely agree that it's confusing in this case. But on the other hand I don't think that Moz really deserves free reign of the -zilla suffix. They took it from someone else, after all, and they chose it in order to play off of its original meaning -- ie, 'super powered and unstoppable.'
On the other other hand, I do think that most of the *zilla names out there are addons for Firefox. So in most cases the name does give you a clue that it's at least related to a Mozilla app. - n8willis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It's news because it's no longer in beta.
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I am both depressed that someone would run a Windows FTP client under wine, and that people are digging you down for pointing it out.
Don't get me wrong, I use Filezilla in Windows too; and recommend it to people all the time... but there are much better alternatives in Linux, and there always have been. Hell lftp has filezilla beat feature wise and you probably already have it :) http://lftp.yar.ru/ - n8willis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11The Mozilla Foundation became a 501(c)(3) in 2003, but the named Mozilla project and Mozilla "organization" goes back to the late 90s -- see http://web.archive.org/web/*/mozilla.org -- and term/mascot itself dates back to at least 1994: http://www.jwz.org/gruntle/nscpdorm.html
- airencracken, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13Nice. Now I don't have to run it in wine.
- danboy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Seems silly to use a client like this when Nautilus has built in FTP. Kind of nice to just use your file manager to manage files.
- TonyB2006, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Am I the last remaining person who just uses "ftp" on the command line still?
- dijital, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Or.. it's news because there are people who haven't heard about it yet... I just celebrated our moon landing yesterday!
- voxel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah, I've been using FileZilla under Linux for a while now... But the windows version always felt more polished, so I'm really glad to hear that same usability will be in the linux version
- TonyB2006, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7What moon landing? *opens wikipedia* - *****, cool!
- inkubux, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8sftp://user@ftpaddress.com in nautilus FTW
- mtekk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You should be using gFTP if you using gnome, and KFTPgrabber if you use KDE... both use their respective desktop environment's widget tool kit (GTK and QT respectively) and will give a consistent look with themes. If I remember correctly FileZilla 3 is using wxWidgets, and thus will look better on Gnome as wxWidgets defaults to GTK in linux environments.
- 0x1B, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Have you seriously been running a Windows FTP client on Linux using Wine? Really? Holy sweet jesus that's sad. In a pathetic way, I mean.
- motang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Stop spamming bitch! This has nothing to with FileZilla.
- danboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6i don't get it. and i'm not trying to be a jerk here, I am a web developer and transfer files between my desktop and servers multiple times daily, Maybe I'm just not aware of the benefits using an additional piece of file transfer software. Does it do something awesome? like transfer files in a better way? Are you guy's touting choice? I like to have choice. It's good. I also like to use the best tool for the job and cut out extra steps wherever possible. So if there is some great benefit to having a separate program for handling FTP transfers I'd love to hear about it.
- jopsen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Agree, but I would say a few FTP clients, there's a lot... Why in the world would anyone want to use Filezilla over Konqueror, Nautilus or GFTP for that matter ???
- AlmostEvil, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah, I tried FileZilla 3 on my Macbook a bit ago. While a great FTP program the user interface on OS X looked totally non-native and butt ugly. I think cyberduck is still the all round best FTP GUI client for OS X. (I use Filezilla 2 on my windows desktop machine)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+11Technically Filezilla has been around since 2001, Mozilla foundation was founded in 2003. So they are not exactly jumping on the "ZILLA" bandwagon.
- hexydes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I totally know what you mean, dude. Having options sucks.
- cronot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4FireFTP is nice, but it doesn't do SFTP, and that's reason #1 I use Filezilla (most of the sites I administer use SFTP instead of FTP). Actually, I don't really like some aspects of Filezilla's interface, but there's nothing better available for free, so, whatever.
- thewump, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I thought "great" and then I realized that since getting SSHFS up and running, I have not TOUCHED an FTP client.
- santaclaws, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4>> My suspicion is that both major desktop environments want you to use their desktop file managers to do FTP. That, too, is acceptable only for minimal tasks. File managers always seem to want to open multiple windows, create thumbnails, hide extensions and ".dot files," and in general optimize the experience for visual inspection of the directory
He's obviously never gotten his head around konqueror. As a web browser it's deficient, but for managing files (and all sorts of network transfers) it's great. Bit of a learning curve, but worth it. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Yup. Thats why I only use IE.
/sarcasm - lament, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6worst logic ever. should I use IE for FTP as well - it works and it's native.
ugh. - Gzero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Yeah but the Linux port of Filezilla was always rather disappointing. Could never figure out how to show hidden files (so I could find .htaccess).
- neoform, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'm still waiting for FileZilla server to hit 1.0
- brianez21, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For fast transfers downwards, sure - but wget can't upload. And please use the nested reply - don't quote.
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sad sad sad that people are digging up your retarded statement :( Mozilla the engine is literally > 10 years old.
- johlin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Beer has always worked better for me.
- NedSlider, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Quote:
>>Am I the last remaining person who just uses "ftp" on the command line still?
Probably.
I prefer wget :) - init100, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Except that gFTP sucks. It crashes all the time.
- davidhildreth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1finally! now i can stop using Fugu
- ronin2040, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2out of curiousity, what do you recommend for a file server if not FTP? Keeping in mind that to me setting up a webserver just for file downloads is sort of out of the question--bigger pain in the ass, fewer benefits.
- bloodylip, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Same with fish:// in KDE. Ever since I discovered that, it's been the only way I transfer large amounts of files.
- n8willis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No, RC means release candidate; that's not beta. The project leaders determine that status change, not me. You can browse the old downloads to compare the changelogs on the betas to the roadmap. Once it's RC the milestones for release have been met.
- llbbl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It is a good program, the best Open Source FTP program for Windows.
The mac version has been out for about 6 months but it is really buggy compared to their windows release. I havent tried the Linux version. I wonder if it is as buggy as the mac version. - brianez21, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No - I use it all the time! Although lftp is a bit better when you have it available.
- init100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"using PuTTY's implementation of SSH"
That is what FileZilla should do too. The PuTTY implementation of the SSH protocol is excellent. - zouhair, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3lftp FTW
- DarkMeld, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yea Transmit for Mac is pretty good too. Make sure u try their widget. You drag and drop a file into the widget and it automatically uploads to a specified folder on a server.
- jasonwea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My favourite FTP client is Interarchy.
The local/remote views in Transmit are a bit dated. Why not drag to/from Finder? - HeroreV, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Ubuntu (at least Feisty) has a beta of FileZilla 3 in the repositories. I've been using it without any problems for quite a while. If you use Ubuntu, there's really no reason to be running FileZilla in Wine.
- CptnObvious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2IMHO using Konqueror is much easier, I can just drag and drop files and browse it like it were right on my filesystem. But hey, I can't complain about more linux software. ;)
- NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I really hope they fixed sftp too!
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6I've been running FileZilla 3 here on Linux for months, no problems. Why is this news?
