- Kenzan, on 05/14/2008, -7/+98A run for it's money?
Both are Free Distros.
In any event, It's like comparing Win with Win. - estvir, on 05/14/2008, -13/+68Such a sparse article and gives little information as to how it gives Ubuntu a run for its money, no Digg. Wired writes rather horrible articles..
- SnowCrashv5, on 05/14/2008, -40/+93kinda sad the only way a fedora article can be dugg up is if it mentions how it stacks up to ubuntu in the article.
- schestowitz, on 05/14/2008, -7/+42The release of Fedora made FP.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -8/+34Check the front page.
- bumcheekcity, on 05/14/2008, -2/+28I note it's "Ubuntu" and not "Windows" in the title. That dig (!) aside, the article is crap. It's only about 4 paragraphs long, no real detail at all. Buried for just not being very good at all.
- thinman1189, on 05/14/2008, -3/+26The Ars article on Ubuntu had 10x the content. Buried for being a waste of time.
- irgeorge, on 05/14/2008, -1/+23MD5 checksums are for pussys. Live on the edge.
- ha1f, on 05/14/2008, -2/+22It's more sad that pointless comparison (this article is terrible btw) articles and release announcements front page easily while the OpenSSL fix/bug that makes Debian hilariously insecure doesn't even stand a chance.
- esoteric, on 05/14/2008, -3/+23Yeah its not bad other then the fact that nvidia drivers won't work with it yet ...
- DteK, on 05/14/2008, -5/+25I hardly think Fedora is chasing Ubuntu
- kaniz, on 05/14/2008, -1/+20How about a "run for market share" then? While money may not be involved, having a bit of competition is a good thing.
If Microsoft showed us anything - going too long without competition leads to stagnation and problems.
If both Fedora and Ubuntu are competing to be the "most end-user friendly Linux distro ever!", it'll mean good things for both distros, and the people using them. - buddyw, on 05/14/2008, -2/+16Ars always has 10x the content.
- Adelie, on 05/14/2008, -0/+13How about "Slashdot goes down for maintenance, Wired struggles to find no news"? or even better "New Fedora 9 better than bad article on Wired about it". Yay Fedora, boo digg for not electing a better story to the front page. Buried!
- Kamael, on 05/14/2008, -0/+13The USB install sounds nice, but I fail to see how this gives Ubuntu (or any Linux distribution for that matter) "a run for its money"
- Technoloki, on 05/14/2008, -0/+10Ahhhh, so that's why my computer went crazy monkey on me during the first boot. Had to go back to hardy.
- parax, on 05/14/2008, -0/+11I dunno what you're doing. Bad connection causing corrupted data transfers? In 3 years I've never had a problem with an MD5 checksum on Ubuntu. I don't even know how you could consider your faulty downloads a fault of Ubuntu, it's not like Canonical released bad files.
- slasc, on 05/14/2008, -1/+14I switched from Fedora to Ubuntu after the first time I saw Synaptic and Apt-get functioning in Ubuntu. This article mentions an "improved" package manager, but it doesn't really say by how much. Until it can allow me to get a package catagog quickly, and install a rpm or series of rpms without having to worry about "dependancy not found" due to conflicting repository crap, I'm not touching it again. (I was really tired of waiting 6 hours while Fedora tried to resolve dependancies and downloaded packages, only for it to tell me "You just wasted your time because we don't know where the f*** this random library is". Even worse when the files for that library and even that version of the library were already installed. It was ridiculous. Let's not even start on the ease of use for upgrading a distribution using the Update-Manager in Ubuntu. I've only run that once, but it worked. I wouldn't even attempt that on Fedora.
Have they completely corrected these issues? - Kamujin, on 05/14/2008, -0/+9OS X looks pretty, but the workflow is horribly inefficient to my needs. I spend too much time moving windows around and jumping across the screen to go from window to menu and back.
Its like the 1 button mouse on my MBP. Yeah, I can 2 finger click, but having a right mouse button is just much simpler and more efficient.
Sometimes "Think different" is nothing more then picking the losing paradigm. - PlutoPrime, on 05/14/2008, -0/+9what a waste of time. Do not want.. Do not read. The article author says nothing to backup the claims. It's pure flamebait/Fallacy
- melat0nin, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9Are you for real?
- KWhat, on 05/14/2008, -6/+16Even with yum, rpm is one of the worst package managers out there. I don't think Debian based distros need to worry.
- bieber, on 05/14/2008, -3/+10Wired writers make some horrible _blog entries_. Their magazine articles are, by and large, friggin awesome.
- whiteguysamurai, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9They don't go on to say how it does.
And what's true with fedora, is true with all linux, if you like it, you can just add it to ubuntu. - RWVolkl158, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9Having just installed Fedora 9 yesterday, I have to say it is very, very nice. In my opinion it feels much more polished than Ubuntu's latest release. First off it plays much nicer with my hardware from a clean install than any version of Ubuntu ever has (8.04 was actually the worst experience I've had with proper hardware detection/configuration for some reason...).
I've never liked Fedora's previous releases or Redhat for that matter, but 9 is very promising and worth a look for anyone looking to give another distro a try. Apart from the Nvidia driver issue at present it should be a very solid release - JAppi, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6Package management has improved tons in the latest version of Fedora.
First of all the speed of yum (the tool used to install RPMs) has increased significantly. Previous versions of yum were very slow as opposed to apt-get which significantly faster. Now they're about equivalent.
PackageKit. Great software. Hasn't been ported to Ubuntu. But it's awesome software. Handles software installation, updates, opening unknown filetypes.
Downside is that Nvidia Drivers don't work yet. Blame that on nvidia, not Fedora. - Jorin, on 05/14/2008, -0/+9From a beginner's perspective, should it be important for me to try other distros than Ubuntu? Ubuntu 8.04 has been pretty good on my laptop, so I'm wondering what the real difference would be if I gave Fedora a try. The thing that confuses me most about Linux isn't the OS -it's that no two people ever have the same opinion or experience when it comes to a particlar distro -let alone the many varieties of other distros to choose from- and the range of experiences goes from: "My laptop is now a brick. **** Linux." to "I have an orgasm every time my computer boots up." It's a bit hard to establish common ground with that. :)
- Phocion55, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5If Linux "failed to deliver", chances are you'd be Internet-less right now.
- Mechanicat, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5You should learn to use bittorrent friend.
- arobar, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8Unsolicited links that are not related to the content at hand... Yup, sure smells like spam to me.
- richbleak, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5The one constant across all of your attempts is your setup. I have downloaded Ubuntu desktop and server at least 5 times at different locations in the last 2 weeks and have never once had a problem with the result. Sounds to me like you either have a problem with your system or a fatal error between the seat and keyboard.
- RWVolkl158, on 05/14/2008, -0/+6Personally if you're happy with Ubuntu and it runs well on your hardware there isn't an extremely compelling reason to switch. Most people who go through a lot of different distros do it because they enjoy tinkering with their computers, or they've had problems with whatever distro(s) they've had installed in the past. Fedora really isn't THAT different from Ubuntu and both are pretty solid Linux distributions despite what some fanboy pissing contests might have you believe :)
- 0x1B, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Exactly what are you smoking? Linux has a "failure to deliver"?! You ever used Google to search for something? That all happened on Linux. I've been using it as my primary OS for the last 13 years, and it's been fine, no hype needed...
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5yeah too bad it doesnt work like that. the linux kernel is already monolithic enough as is
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5"Perhaps its our connection"
Roommates? - jjpertusch, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5how do you get anything done with all that rebooting!
- custangro, on 05/14/2008, -2/+7I had the same problems with Ubuntu...from ubuntu.com!
I just waited until they mailed me the disc.
-C - Zorkon, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5Just tried to install Fedora 9 on my HP dv2412ca laptop. The onboard keyboard and trackpad were not detected during install, requiring me to connect an external USB keyboard and mouse. The X-Server wouldn't start, forcing me to do a text-only install. Ubuntu 8.04 (and 7.10) managed to detect and use the onboard keyboard, trackpad and video card just fine.
So far, I'm not very impressed. Video card, OK I can understand that. But onboard keyboard and trackpad? C'mon already! - Zaromis, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Don't do the "user" thing and blame the source. If it were a problem with the source, there would have been a large amount of reports leading to articles and other postings about the issue. Hell, you would have been digging an article about how the distro download was broken. The only constant in all of your failed attempts is your computer / network.
- tocsy, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5OK, serious question here: as a (not too talented) ubuntu user, what reason would there be for me to switch to Fedora 9? I'm curious about the actual positives of switching over, as the article didn't really say.
- HonoredMule, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Those 0-dollar bills are MINE!
- teaguecl, on 05/14/2008, -0/+5This is your problem, not a problem with Ubuntu or Fedora. If you are unwilling to learn new concepts, then obviously you won't do well using any Linux as your desktop. In fact you won't do well at anything at all...
- TheWindBlows, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4after nearly 2 days.
- arobar, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Unless you used Ubuntu to dick around with your NTFS volume (which it should warn you about doing), then this is a coincidence. One OS won't touch the other.
- drakken33, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Having spent the day playing with Fedora 9 and been using Ubuntu 8.04 since it was released I have to agree. Fedora 9 does feel more polished.
However, I had a massive problem with networking. It worked from a fresh install but if I tried to change the hostname and changed the wrong setting my network card refused to work. I eventually found the right setting to change but couldn't find a fix for the problem so ended up installing Fedora 3 times. It's all working very well now thankfully. - mossblaser, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Twice
- bieber, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5Failure to deliver? Ubuntu's been delivering just fine for me, for about two years now...
- weizbox, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3hah... this is fun to see the way that people digg comments up/down. Generally on a Ubuntu article post, if you said something was working, you would be dugg up, and whoever said something wasn't working, would get dugg down. In this case your down to -1 for saying it DOES work, but in a Fedora-based article. Interesting how comments are dealt with from distro to distro on here ;)
