- NihilFist, on 10/17/2007, -7/+39Finally a front page story about a Linux OS, that is NOT Ubuntu! Don't get me wrong, I got nothing against Ubuntu, but whatever Ubuntu can do, any other Linux distro can do.
- czimmerman, on 10/10/2007, -3/+31You know, Fedora was one of the first distributions that I really got started with, but I got to say, in my eyes (and in the eyes of many) it got pushed aside when Ubuntu appeared almost out of nowhere. However, with this new set of tools, it makes me really excited to take a look at Fedora 8. Good job!
- schestowitz, on 10/17/2007, -0/+18> Fedora is based on RHEL.
No, RHEL takes a lot from Fedora. You got it backwards. - Compukid, on 10/17/2007, -0/+17Come on people, This has nothing to do with which Distro is better. Back to the topic at hand, This is interesting. I use Google Docs for some simple word process and spreadsheets. What I like about it is I can start something on one of my 2 desktops at home, and continue with my work laptop or work desktop. (Yes I have all these PC's and I use them all) so having an on-line desktop that helps me to connect or view some of these on-line apps will help. I am running Fedora 7 on my work desktop, I will look into upgrading
- geminitojanus, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13I love lamp.
- maz2331, on 10/17/2007, -0/+11I like Fedora 7.
- BrandonMills, on 10/17/2007, -6/+16Fedora is based on RHEL. RHEL is the kind of distribution a company will pay you to know. Ubuntu as a corporate OS is pretty much a joke. As a user OS, it's dandy, which is what it's meant for. Just don't confuse it with what you run your server on or the clients you push out to your corporate labs.
Besides that, Fedora 7 is actually really up there with Ubuntu in terms of ease-of-use. ( I didn't think Fedora 6 really was. ) - KibibyteBrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Yes. I was a Fedora user who switched to Ubuntu namely because I wanted to help out with the project and such. Now I am thinking of switching back. It just seems to be better organized and more geared toward innovation rather than just progressing the Linux Desktop system to be competitive with Windows and OSX.
Fedora is probably the most rock solid mainstream Linux I have ever used that still offered most of the features that other distros had. Also, when it comes to customizing the disto for use on headless sytem/custom setups, everything is documented in some way. I ran into big trouble with Ubuntu in that respect. - Coldkill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Just shut up! You've been trolling every Linux topic with your stupidity
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Don't feed the trolls. Block him and move on.
- RandaII, on 11/08/2007, -4/+11Your company must be looking for trouble then. any respectiable company would use suse or redhat. Paid support will save your ass one day.
- mmcgrath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Actually this is very misleading and unfortunate. If you get involved in Fedora you'll realize that Red Hat really uses it as more of a compass for RHEL. Sure, Red Hat's emerging technologies group puts things into Fedora first but a lot of people and companies are doing that. Fedora's release cycle makes it the ideal place to test new technology of any kind because no matter what happens you can make drastic changes to it in just 6 months. Fedora was the first distro to really get any virtualization support and it had it YEARS ago.
The fact that Red Hat chooses to base RHEL off of Fedora is more of a tribute to Fedora then anything. Red Hat doesn't have to base their code off of Fedora. - trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Canonical offers paid support for Ubuntu.
- mvent2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually last time it was superior stability, better usability and more ease of use. The only spinning cube around here is your head.
- KungFuJesus, on 10/17/2007, -3/+7Ubuntu is based off of debian, one of the best server distros
- w00ters, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Hooray for Active Desktop!
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I agree with all of your comment except calling tinkers 'retards'. Just because they like to play around and customise their machines does not make them retards. I'd say if they are capable of doing it successfully then by definition they are NOT retards.
That said, RomeyRome appears to be a retard, because he thinks Ubuntu is just for n00bs. On that point, you are correct. - stockjones, on 10/18/2007, -0/+2So the big diff between Suse and Red Hat "Enterprise" in the linux world relates to support? Ubuntu offers paid support.
- kevmaster, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4One thing that the Fedora Desktop had that Ubuntu did not, was a good tool to visually change the display settings. Cloning, Twinview, Adjusting Frequencies, etc. But now, Ubuntu has it too:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Gutsy_goodness_i ... - KungFuJesus, on 10/18/2007, -1/+3Ubuntu has paid support, dude
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Only retards like you like fixing drivers issues and compiling the kernel. The rest of us just want things to work. Most people want to spend time doing work on the system not working to fix the system.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah yeah :p Sorry, should have double-checked my post :)
- doopy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have been using Redhat since version 6.0 then I started using Fedora. I tried many other linux distro including Suse and Ubanto however I always end up using Fedora distro as it is more stable and reliable.
We are also using Redhat in our ocmpany and some backup computer running Fedora.
I will always recommend Redhat or Fedora for servers. - ungamedplayer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, I don't think he does. I'm reading it and it makes sense and seems true to me, perhaps you'd like to elaborate on what is the horse and cart in this example.
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Fedora was ORIGINALLY based on RHEL, because that's where its fork() started. But since the community got involved, RHEL has taken much from Fedora.
- chuckyc130, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I take that quite offensive, even if i turn 15 in a couple of months.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5As is Fedora. They both however also have other audiences.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, for *most* uses of the Linux distros, there are corresponding Red Hat distros that match the Fedora releases. Wanna be amused? Watch the RHEL 5 installer. Some packages still retain the FC6 package names.
- wariola, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm an Ubuntu user since 6.06 LTS and was running 7.04 before this announcement came along. Have nothing against Ubuntu, in fact love it alot and the first Linux distro that really "Just Works" (Fedora Core 6 and Suse Linux 10.1 is a joke to run as a desktop pc some time ago). Now however with openSUSE 10.3 (not be confused with Novell $LED) and Fedora 7 & 8 I'm looking to move to a new distro. Now I'm running openSUSE 10.3 but will absolutely upgrade to Fedora 8 once its stable... already tested the Fedora 8 Test 3 though... just for a change of scene... Will check out Gutsy too... Looks fantastic for now...
- sybesis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what are you talking about....?
- HonoredMule, on 11/08/2007, -3/+4Twelve years running and doing just fine, thanks. Our primary resource is competent people, not systems to support, contain, and neuter incompetent people.
- Zoiked, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Don't get me wrong, Ubuntu is a great desktop; but isn't better then other distros. I hope Fedora is stepping up the game because I really like Fedora but some features I wish I had in Ubuntu aren't in Fedora.
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Personally, I can't stand anything that's a fork of Red Hat. This is because I've been spoiled by apt/aptitude, the Ubuntu/Debian community, and the openness of the Ubuntu/Debian system. I despise the RPM system, very very much. And the Fedora community is by far one of the worst I've ever had experience with. I once asked a simple question about broadcom drivers and didn't get a response for a week. Once I finally did get a response, it was someone else asking the same question (a bump, if you will). Never got answered. Meanwhile, asking that question in the Debian/Ubuntu forums, I got a quick and helpful response that same day. RH/Fedora/Derivs just can't compare.
- mmcgrath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Uhhh, Red Hat is a company. not an operating system. Please send me the link to the question you asked (be it on bugzilla or a mailing list) I'd be curious to see it. Yes. I'm calling you out.
- tech10171968, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"yeah man u said it ubuntus gonna kick linux ass"
Quite possibly one of the most idiotic statements I've ever read on Digg. How old are you, 14? - oedenfield, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've been waiting for this... maybe a Google distro that has all of their apps as the defaults.
- brettalton, on 06/21/2008, -0/+1So then why does it matter what distro is talked about? If Fedora can do what Ubuntu can, then they're interchangeable, aren't they?
- dcherryholmes, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Sun seems to take Ubuntu seriously. I support about $45K of revenue a day on Ubuntu servers (LTS, of course).
- cristiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Cloud computing" is a conspiracy designed to show you more ads. I simply love it!
- iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I use Ubuntu at home as my server, and as my desktop. So far, no troubles. And using 6.06, I get Long Term Support on my Server install.
Ubuntu, if I'm not mistaken, is also working on a certification much like RHCE. - iceschade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Oh lawd! Does anyone else here understand where they got the name "BigBoard?" Because I'm going to feel totally ubergeek if I'm the only one.
- tpfennig, on 12/24/2007, -0/+0The real name should be "Big Bloat"
- mmcgrath, on 10/17/2007, -1/+1No, Fedora and RHEL were both based on RH9
- gmhafiz, on 10/17/2007, -4/+3pclinuxos was on the front page news a while ago.
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -2/+0Cheapest and the best data recovery service in the world.

Ever wondered why "ubuntu"s (using SUSE, FYI) have better grammar? We have this little thing called a "spelling checker". It's built into Firefox. You should try it! - buggu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0That's a really poor implementation of Vista's Side Bar, and a whole lot useless to boot. What's the use of giving all that information one line space in the board when you work space is still going to be your internet browser? It's just taking a whole lot of useless space.
- dcherryholmes, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Sun seems to take Ubuntu seriously. I support about $45K of revenue a day on Ubuntu servers (LTS, of course).
