- TheCosmicFool, on 11/13/2007, -4/+38With a name like Werewolf.. I think the linux boys finally trying to appeal to the gamer crowds..
(The not so distant future) Q:"What are you running?" A:"Zombie Massacre edition" - inactive, on 11/08/2007, -4/+22Now THAT'S a cool codename.
- crossmr, on 11/02/2007, -1/+18what exactly is this a screenshot of? I've never really understood the point in releasing screenshots of new linux editions. Generally you can run the same front ends on any distribution you want if you want to go ahead and install it. So all they're really doing is showing off the default background and icons...
- Gman1223, on 10/31/2007, -4/+20I just installed the latest test release, and I must say that it's very good.
The theme isn't at all as bad as the screenshots make it out to be. Still, kinda ugly, but I like it a hell of a lot better than the main Ubuntu theme.
Its a lot more polished than F7 too. - twljagflba, on 11/08/2007, -0/+14compiz-fusion can be installed from the Fedora repository. Compiz ships with Fedora 8 and can be enabled through the "desktop effects".
- djlspider, on 11/05/2007, -1/+14For sure. I mean, I don't care how gutsy a gibbon is, put it up against a WEREWOLF? No contest.
- hockey, on 11/04/2007, -3/+16Fedora has werewolves, Ubuntu has gutsy gibbon's and hoary hedgehogs. . .Gentoo has a cow. . . a plain jane old cow. . . .named Larry.
/head asplode - Waiting2awake, on 11/03/2007, -1/+14Not only that, but I am currently using Fedora 6 - ZOD!! Kneel before ZOD!!
If for no other reason than the name - my linux rocks. - Waiting2awake, on 11/03/2007, -0/+13why?
- sveterv, on 11/03/2007, -0/+13and I'm going switch to Fedora 8, just after it's released, Now I'm on Ubuntu :) Choice is a beautiful thing!
- BrandonMills, on 11/03/2007, -1/+13With Fedora 7 and 8, it looks like they've finally acknowledged the need for user interface improvements, and are in the same league as Ubuntu when it comes to improvements.
- Waiting2awake, on 10/31/2007, -0/+10why?
- Waiting2awake, on 10/31/2007, -0/+10Nope, I can't. I prefer Fedora but I can't tell you why. I think it just seemed to work for me and I have no reason to move to another distro. That said, there is nothing wrong with trying new flavours, but I am a fairly basic type of person and as long as the thing is stable and does what I need - I am generally a happy penguin. If Ubuntu does what you want - why change?
- bourneagain, on 11/04/2007, -4/+14I'm pretty sure Sun's java stack IS open source already . . .
- tgui, on 11/03/2007, -0/+10Funny, you get dug down stating that YOU like the default Fedora theme better, not that you stated it IS better.
- dyous87, on 10/31/2007, -0/+9I've been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now. I also use fedora core 7 and I've used mandrake. Quite honestly I have no idea what you are talking about. If you think Windows XP is more "polished" and more configurable then you must not have even tried to configure your linux desktop and I dare say you know nothing about linux.
- Philluminati, on 11/03/2007, -3/+11does fedora have compiz fusion out of the box?
- mrmacky, on 11/03/2007, -0/+8I'm going to be honest here, it looks nothing like a Mac. In fact, it looks like a relatively standard Gnome desktop with a blue theme.
- DigitalJester, on 10/30/2007, -0/+7They took the Core bit off of the name of Fedora ;)
- dyous87, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7meh no one asked about apple...who cares.
- madvulcan, on 10/31/2007, -0/+7I can't give you reason why you should switch. The same way my friend can't really convince me to switch to Ubuntu from Fedora. I have all I need from Fedora, love it and know it. I say use what works for you. Maybe if you see something compelling from other distro, give it a try. I still try ubuntu out of curiosity when I have time, but my primary distro is still Fedora. Distro flame war is pointless. The whole point of opensource is that what's good in one distro can be ported to another, so everyone gets the benefit.
- bullhead2007, on 10/31/2007, -3/+9That would be totally sweet. Debian Master Chief edition. Ubuntu Bouncy Mario edition. Fedora Core Grand Theft Auto edition..
- seeis4cookie, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6They did that in Fedora 7 when they combined "core" and "extras"... makes more sense than peanut butter and jelly.
- mmcgrath, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6For one, you'll find a lot of little changes, like newer versions of software in Fedora vs Ubuntu, this is typical and you can find more examples on your own.
Ubuntu: apache-2.2.4
Fedora: apache-2.2.6 - thetayloreffect, on 10/30/2007, -0/+6The "theme" of the default XServer is a pretty silly thing to judge a distribution on. That being said, I'm glad to see Red Hat and Ubuntu pushing one and other in terms things like hardware management, and multi monitor support.
They are both great distributions, and both have a rabidly active community surrounding them. I wonder if this build has any enhancements in the battery life department (at the moment laptop battery life is one tally is an ever shrinking list of Windows Pro's over mainstream Linux desktops). - BrandonMills, on 10/30/2007, -0/+5Well yeah, it uses Gnome. Of course it looks like Ubuntu with a blue theme :)
- bpepple, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5Wrong. The Sun stack still contains binary plugs, which is what is being replaced in IcedTea with GNU Classpath code.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5If you're a real Fedora fan, celebrate this new release by pimping the outside of your machine with the stickers on http://nicubunu.blogspot.com/
- loconet, on 10/30/2007, -2/+6http://www.phoronix.com.nyud.net:8080/scan.php?pag ...
- dyous87, on 10/31/2007, -3/+7I wouldn't if I were you, Ubuntu 7.10 is great and I don't think you'd find Fedora 8 and better. Use what you are comfortable with.
- Mejogid, on 10/30/2007, -1/+5Of course there is - build options, kernel configuration, custom utilities, integration between packages all add up, and can certainly make a difference to battery life.
- richip, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3You'll find that most people won't directly compare the two since it's like comparing Red Delicious apples to Gala ones. I will, however, mention that you should look at Fedora's Release Notes and take stock of the direction that Fedora developers are taking their distribution to. Spend some time browsing the fedora-devel mailing list and you can see what drives its developers. In my case, the reason I like Fedora is because I admire and respect the people behind it. I run a consulting business and I am confident that Fedora is the right choice for me, both for pushing to customers as well as using it to run my entire home network (PVR, media center, servers, desktops and all).
- Tyr7BE, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4I thought cow was a Debian deal?
Anyway this pretty much shows that you don't need to take yourself seriously when developing world class software. These distros power a huge portion of the world's servers. There are entire data centers for megacorporations running red hat linux. Just because it's called werewolf doesn't make it perform any differently, just like naming Ubuntu's latest release 'Gusty Gibbon' doesn't make it any better or worse. - marcos89, on 11/09/2007, -3/+6loved the desktop icon set mixture..hate the new fedora theme.
- mmcgrath, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3Fedora has an updates-released repository, are you saying Ubuntu doesn't? There's lots of things Ubuntu could update, they just don't. And thats totally fine, not everyone needs the latest version, but for those that do, thats why Fedora is there.
- ja1217, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3No, Hungry Hungry Hippos would have been the best name ever. It would've beaten out Werewolf in my opinion.
- apoc2050, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4Looks like ... SUSE ... and Ubuntu ... and every other linux desktop that uses gnome. Sure it does looks nice and clean, but it is nothing new.
- fifthecho, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3I've only found one big reason that has some of my coworkers looking to switch to Fedora from Ubuntu - their configuration utilities.
The Red Hat/Fedora "system-config-*" utilities are the best out there.
I know of no other distribution that offers a stock utility to provide ADS integration for a Linux distro. - oomfoofoo, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2Why do fanboys always have to post that they use ubuntu or switched to ubuntu? No one cares.
- lsweet, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2This site covers information about all sorts of releases and usually includes reviews of certain flavors -- link is Fedora specific.
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=fedo ... - Macskeeball, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2The "in my opinion" or the "I think that" would still be implied in the latter. In my English classes I was taught to leave it off for that reason.
- SuperCheese, on 11/04/2007, -1/+3Fedora doesn't use the codenames for promotion though, unlike Ubuntu. It's more just thrown in there at the last minute to identify the release. They aren't trying to appeal to anyone in particular with it.
- muep, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2It has Nautilus as the default file manager. Metacity is not a file manager at all.
- KageSenshi, on 11/09/2007, -0/+2+1
me too! .. Fedora 8 is the first fedora release which I don't change its default GTK theme and wallpaper .. besides adjusting the color of Nodoko GTK theme to darker colors coz I hate bright screens .. - keyo, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2put the x in the ***** corner. Fedora is more of an enterprise distro, for big networks.
- chrismgtis, on 11/08/2007, -3/+5Those screenshots look better than any distro I've seen so far. Maybe someone is starting to realize their GUI looks like ass.
- arcticblue, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2Actually, there was a Hoary Hedgehog a few years ago when Ubuntu was still new.
- Youssif, on 11/01/2007, -1/+3I am thinking to switch back to fedora because the business needs not because that Ubuntu is bad, but when you come to Enterprise, the only good answer out there is Red hat, and to get familiar with it you better go with Fedora since it's the core of Red hat as you well know.
For me, Ubuntu is fun I will keep using it at home PC , but the next Linux distro on my laptop will be Fedora 8 for sure. It's time to back to business ! - mcrules, on 10/30/2007, -0/+2I think it was meant as a joke... note the "days" comment...
