- TheRemoteViewer, on 11/13/2007, -3/+25No, the problem is 90% of those games suck ass and those that don't suck ass tend to be niche games like Nethack and OpenTTD. No one seems interested in producing art assets for open source games so the community is in a perpetual bind.
- wisedude, on 11/13/2007, -4/+22Everybody knows linux has a plethora of completely free games. The problem is, those are the only games it DOES have
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/12/2007, -0/+11Linux + Wine = Games
I run Fedora 7 and I play Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike, and World of Warcraft regularly this way, and I didn't need to be a computer expert to set it up either.
Also, there are plenty of fun Linux exclusives already (Battle for Wesnoth anyone?). Just because you don't know about them does not mean they don't exist.
Lastly, setting your user icon to the Windows logo doesn't make you cool nor does it lend weight to your opinions concerning Linux - nastri83, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9I like the extra comma in the description. It made my day.
- ubergeek09, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9Use Cedega to play Windows games, or just set up a dual boot system. Their are hardly any retail Linux games the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Quake 4, Doom 3, UT3, and Quake Wars.
- joshma, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9Although it's nice seeing Linux getting games, Linux isn't really lacking those right now. It needs GOOD games, games developed not by volunteers with other things to do but full-time graphic artists and programmers with no lives. Those are the games I prefer to play. :)
- aaronm67, on 11/12/2007, -0/+7I don't know...Tremulous is a genuinely fun, fairly popular, non-niche game that runs natively on Linux.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7I'm sure that Vista users are having lots of fun troubleshooting drivers.
- meed, on 11/11/2007, -0/+5Does anyone know if it includes the windows emulators to play windows based games too?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6I'm playing FF3 with ZSNES right now. Why re-invent the wheel?
- Stonekeeper, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Tremulous FTW!
- i4mt3hwin, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4Needs some UT3 when it comes out for linux
- daftman, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4> The real problem is the lack of DirectX on Linux since nobody develops for OpenGL anymore.
What do you think Sony, Nintendo use for their graphics? DirectX?
Please the only DirectX games that you see are those on Microsoft platform. Playstation series, Wii, Mac, Linux all uses OpenGL. I am very certain that the number of games on those platforms would outnumber those on Microsoft. - init100, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Nobody develops for OpenGL anymore? Then how do all these games on the PS3, PS2, Wii, etc, work? They all use OpenGL.
- djGentoo, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3Word. Completely addicted to Trem. And don't forget Sauerbraten and OpenArena.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3I actually get better frame rates with Wine than I do in Windows.
And, um, Wine runs DirectX... that's sort of the point. - jrseney, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2Haha yeh I was thinking that too... might have trouble re-distributing commercial games, even though all you need a cd-key to play (wouldn't be free).
Besides, I'm sure UT3 is gonna be huge and take up a DVD by itself... - jrseney, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2Worse than quake 1? Actually the graphics are really good, just not realistic. From website:
"Visually, we try to cater to the fast game play Warsow provides. To keep the focus on competitive gaming, visibility is an important aspect in Warsow. Using a celshaded, cartoon-like style on the maps, textures, and models we try to combine good visibility, suitable for competitive gameplay, with having a unique, attractive and personal style. We try to keep the graphic effects minimalistic, clear and visible."
Also,
"It is based on the Qfusion 3D engine (a modification of the Quake 2 GPL engine)"
And,
"The base gameplay is focussed around the art of movement, meaning moving, speed and tricks play a big part in the gameplay. Besides this, mapcontrol, aim, teamplay and fragging skills play their role too."
And finally, from one of their recent (and frequent) news updates,
"While still playing around with some advanced renderer features like bumpmapping, normalmapping and specularmapping. We are also looking to improve the visual quality of Warsow in other departments."
I must also mention that after playing this game for awhile and getting a feel for the movement, UT feels so sloooow. :-D - int19h, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Warsow, Wesnoth and Frets on fire are pretty fun and high quality too. Try them :)
- ubergeek09, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't say it's one of the best free FPS games around but it certainly is fun.
- schestowitz, on 11/12/2007, -6/+8Cool. Looks like about 200 games. These Fedora have at least 2 competitors though, e.g. http://live.linux-gamers.net/ .
- missingnoh4x, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, NetHack is awesome.
- int19h, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Of course you can expect Wine to be as efficient. Wine Is Not an Emulator but a re-implementation of windows. Wine also supports DirectX. :)
- cawfee, on 11/11/2007, -1/+3That's some intensely pretty cover art.
- g33b33, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Um, all those games are from the Dark Ages. Call of Duty 4 on Linux and I will gladly swap.
- hornsworth, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1There's always TA Spring, which is a truly excellent RTS game, the only problem being it is entangled in its Total Annihilation roots (the community would rather build on TA content than the decent completely free mods that exist). Give it a try!
- rahulsundaram, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1It includes no shareware games as such. Just free and open source games.
- mbthompson, on 11/12/2007, -2/+3The problem isn't a lack of games for Linux. The problem is the piss-poor quality of those games, i.e. Tux Racer.
- daftman, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1No the problem is that the game industry has move to a state where if you don't go 3D, have pixel shading graphics, explosive sound effects, it's consider a ***** game. Remember people, game take alot of money to make and to produce and usually free games only have a small group of developers with a very small budget. More often they have to do their own artwork and 3d models.
The problem does not exist ONLY on Linux but also other platforms as well. Go and find other "good" free games on Windows or Mac without pirating. You simply can't.
Sadly this is the way that the game industry is headed. Just like the Hollywood industry where only the big budget movie with nice special effects and big actors will only be considered "good". Free movies with unknown actors or in this case free games without expensive artwork, 3d models will ALWAYS be considered ***** to you people. - computergod, on 11/13/2007, -4/+5Linux is good for a lot of things, games are not one of them. WineX is great for playing windows games, but you can't expect it to be as efficient as playing them on Windows. The real problem is the lack of DirectX on Linux since nobody develops for OpenGL anymore.
- cawfee, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2I wish they'd at least come up with a decent Final Fantasy 3 / Breath Of Fire-esque sprite RPG that doesn't need much in the way of pretty graphichs but at least offers bounds of gameplay. Of course no spare-time game developer team will ever top the biggest hits out there, but with a little effort in the right place, a lot can be achieved.
- i4mt3hwin, on 11/11/2007, -1/+2err, i forgot that this list is for open source/free games and such, UT3 is still going to cost money. At least it's a game for linux though.
- missingnoh4x, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Last I checked, NetHack was a little under 2 megs. Who needs a live DVD for tha - Wait, there's other games on there? Bah, who needs anything else?
- rahulsundaram, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1It includes wine. The other emulators are commercial, proprietary and not included.
- rahulsundaram, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Strange comment especially since Linux and free software by itself is developed in large part due to volunteers
- hadak, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1who said anything about free? i'll gladly pay for a game that's released natively for linux.
quake wars, anyone? - missingnoh4x, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1If you're going to mention Frets on Fire, don't forget Stepmania.
- cplusplus, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Grubby Games makes 'em
http://www.grubbygames.com/order.php - kolakutusu, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0But you can't expect it to be as efficient as playing them on Windows.Needs a live DVD for that .Wait, there's other games on there. Bah, who needs anything else?
Fedora have at least 2 competitors though.
Thanks,

http://www.bid-directory.net - Jawshie, on 11/11/2007, -0/+0I see some of you saying get Cedega or Wine... all the Linux games suck... blahblah. The problem is that we shouldn't HAVE to use Cedega or Wine. Hopefully the push of Dell and gPC will get more developers looking towards the real operating system.
OpenGL 2 is just as good in my opinion as DX. I wish some people would open their eyes and move away from their pagan OSs. - Visceral, on 11/11/2007, -2/+2Is this a joke? That game looks worse than quake 1. Buried for lame.
- shanesemler, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1Linux lacks Photoshop and Illustrator. Gimp and Inkscape, as nice as they are, are no substitute for pro software. Really. Plus, as an artist who has dealt with programmers, I can say it's no treat. They treat artist like *****. They think Gimp filters make them artist so what do they need an artist for? When someone has a low opinion of what you do, why waste time doing something for them, for free?
- slipturtle, on 08/18/2008, -0/+0thanks so much for posting this. it was a huge timesaver. Farm frenzy 2 http://www.squidoo.com/farm-frenzy-2
- ravat, on 11/30/2007, -0/+0Is it possible to include video accelerator [Nvidia 7600]?
That works fine with lg-linux-live 0.92, but I didn't find anything in Fedora 8 games DVD [one game won't run cause of missing accel.]
Google didn't give me any help. Is there a official forum for Fedora 8 Games DVD? - bobviously, on 06/04/2008, -0/+0I think what wisedude is lamenting is that games aren't automatically ported for Linux too. The game makers don't have to write exclusively for Linux, only create an alternative version for Linux. Given that, better software for porting seems to be what is needed. Not being a pro on the differences of DirectX and OpenGL, or whatever Linux capable graphics libraries are out there, I don't know how tough of an assignment this is. I know it wouldn't be easy, but I have to believe that this is the real problem in the current environment.
