- vortemenene, on 11/26/2008, -4/+67As an ardent Ubuntu user and supporter, I say hats off to Fedora for such a visually appealing release!
- vinceislegend, on 11/26/2008, -1/+46One should never claim something is glitch-free.
- bpepple, on 11/25/2008, -1/+41Just a quick note about the review. Empathy isn't the default IM client for F10, we reverted back to Pidgin after the RC release since we felt Empathy wasn't quite ready yet (as also noted in the review).
- vortemenene, on 11/26/2008, -0/+37Why not study up on Linux distros before commenting?
- Auzy, on 11/26/2008, -6/+36I've been a big supporter of Ubuntu traditionally, (I'm one of the top contributor of ideas on Ubuntu brainstorm), and all I can say, is that I tried Fedora this morning, and it seems to be doing everything correct.
- I'd feel safe deploying it on large networks (LDAP support in ubuntu is still almost non-existent)
- Encryption is spot on
- Even the first impression (liveCD grub screen) makes you want to believe its better then even OSX in user friendliness.
There is no doubt about it. Fedora is miles ahead of ubuntu and every other distro I have tried. In fact, had good third party software been available, I would go as far as to say it is a better choice for home users then windows.
It even has the latest version of eclipse in the repos, ext4, and systemtap support (like dtrace). Its the first linux distro I've seen for ages that I believe may be competitive enough with other operating systems to stand a chance, and provided they can clear up the last few dodgy areas, linux may have a chance.
Also, the community is much better too. I found the ubuntu community cares more about an OS that runs on a 500mhz computer, then a good experience out of the box (which is rediculous) - pumafi, on 11/26/2008, -5/+31Some USA Mirrors(ISO Images):

http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/linux/releases/1 ... - maz2331, on 11/26/2008, -0/+23Uh, Fedora is backed by Red Hat, not Novell. Novell is responsible for SuSe.
- MagicBobert, on 11/26/2008, -0/+19Yum is actually quite tasty.
- HorseloverFat8, on 11/26/2008, -0/+18Another good thing about the Fedora 10 release that wasn't mention in the article is that 3 of Fedora's third party repositories have now been merged into one, called RPM Fusion. Just enable this repository to get MP3 support, DVD support, and the all important VLC media player. http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration
- i3lu, on 11/26/2008, -0/+16hehe... brimming.
- mmcgrath, on 11/26/2008, -0/+16Frequent updates serve an important role. Ubuntu and Fedora can take big risks during a release and if it doesn't pay off.. they can drastically change it in just 6 months. If the quick release cycle doesn't fit ones use case, there's RHEL/CentOS or Debian to use. Options are a wonderful thing.
- safetysealed, on 11/26/2008, -3/+18lol
I made an error. many apologies. got way too stoned and opened my mouth. disregard my initial comment. - skyshock1, on 11/26/2008, -1/+15As much as I like Ubuntu (been using since pre-Dapper), Fedora has always had my utmost respect, and will probably be my next distro (still a toss up b/w Fedora and Arch). Red Hat contributes a HUGE amount of code back to the Linux kernel and unfortunately Ubuntu... not so much.
I think I'll give the new Fedora a spin. - jxfallout, on 11/26/2008, -0/+14"Windows Vista is so secure I use it as my condom when having sex."
So I take it UAC doesn't kill the mood, eh?

- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/26/2008, -1/+10Maybe it's because they have bi-annual releases. No... no, that's too simple. There must be some other explanation! /s
- motang, on 11/25/2008, -1/+10I tested out Empathy on Xubuntu 8.10 and it wasn't ready IMO, but I am been very happy with Pidgin, and I wouldn't really want to change.
- LastDitchHero, on 11/26/2008, -0/+9Your post was fail on many different levels.
1. Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat
2. So Fedora while liking the help could probably find some way to survive w/o Red Hat
3. Even if you confused Fedora with Open SuSE that would still be epic fail as Open SuSE is still a community based distro with a similar relationship that Fedora and Red Hat share.
4. Some would argue with you on the Novell MS but that is just sprinkles compared to your fail. - maz2331, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8I have been running 9 for a while, and it seems okay stability-wise. Still, I will try out 10 now that the torrent has completed.
- init100, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7"although kernel 2.6.28 is where the next gen stuff is"
Kernel n+1 is always where the next-gen stuff is. - InfernoX, on 11/26/2008, -1/+8Nevermind, always helps to read documentation.
- goobfacey, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7Go for it if you have 64 bit arch.
- clevercasey, on 11/26/2008, -0/+7I have tried many linux distros in the past and have always gone back to Windows for one reason or another. However with this new release of Fedora...I am finally satisfied and see no real reason to switch back to Windows. Great job Fedora team!

"Tough *****, loser." - HorseloverFat8, on 11/26/2008, -1/+7You have a problem with each new release having a new number, that is higher by one than the previous release?

- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5I'm sticking with Ubuntu but good work!
- spectre51, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Bootcamp will allow you to partition the drive so you can install another OS. I haven't installed Ubuntu or Fedora on a Macbook but using bootcamp with vista worked great.
And Auzy sometimes people just wanna mess with an OS at native speed to learn it or see what its all about. I know I do. - HorseloverFat8, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5What the ***** are you on about?
- bytor4232, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Congrats Fedora Team on a job well done!
- bpopp, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5Because at least 80% of computer users don't know what a kernel is, and a large majority of linux users don't really care if it changes (as long as it doesn't break anything). Most people see the most utility from upgrades in those "silly packages".

- ricopicouk, on 11/26/2008, -0/+5This looks great, although kernel 2.6.28 is where the next gen stuff is.. still waiting for the final release of that.
- mooninite, on 11/26/2008, -1/+5Congrats on the release, Brian. You show how well an open community can work like a well oiled machine and put most software companies to shame.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4Nautilus has always been the default file manager in Fedora... it's part of Gnome. lol?
- Trel, on 11/26/2008, -0/+4If I remember, last time I used Fedora, first thing I did was
yum install apt - Auzy, on 11/26/2008, -2/+5I should also add that since they have a proper server package too, that many businesses may actually accept using redhat for their server.
Ubuntu they refused, because nobody wants a server where if the admin quits their job, its a nightmare for the new admin to work out the configuration of the server (Ubuntu server is basically a minimal Ubuntu client). And even if they do, its not easy to get ldap and all that working on Ubuntu - init100, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3"I dont know about you but 400MB sounds like alot of last minute changes."
Unless Ubuntu uses delta packages (I don't know, I use Fedora), the 400 MB are the complete packages, not just the changes. - init100, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3A shorter list:
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ - arcane81, on 11/26/2008, -5/+8I do have to admit, I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now because I like the package management with apt-get and the semi-polished user interface (non-geeky). plus the ability to setup samba / apache. After trying out Fedora 10 I have to admit, it sure is nice to see a default theme that is not brown. Ubuntu just lost one of my workstations to Fedora 10. In my opinion Fedoras dev cycle is much smoother and cleaner than Ubuntu's. I have seen only small minimal changes in the last few days. During the last few days of Ubuntu Ibex,I was downloading 400MB per day of updates. I dont know about you but 400MB sounds like alot of last minute changes.

"Yeah! Yeah! Fire! Fire!" - grg183, on 11/26/2008, -1/+4frequent releases are a big advantage over Windows. Instead of waiting 7 years to release a totally different OS (say Vista), most GNU/Linux distros release every 6 / 12 months and ensure a smooth yet feature rich upgrade and each major feature can be tested and reviewed in practice in a very short time. See how Vista totally failed because it was a completely redesigned and nothing tested in practice!
- ungamedplayer, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3I find it amusing that people make judgements on yum, because of x and y reasons, but never try it again since version N.
Things can be improved and often are. - VitaminH, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3My first incursion into linux was about a year and a half ago when I ended up dual booting my MacBook Pro to OS X and Ubuntu. The tutorials on Ubuntu's website were good and I had the trackpad working pretty well. It wasn't perfect and I still got some issues with "accidental trackpad input" (al la parts of my hand would brush it while I was typing and sometimes cause goofy things to happen - parts of text get highlighted which I would then type over before I realized it, etc) but overall it worked pretty well. So yes, it's very possible.
- fallore, on 11/26/2008, -0/+3Looks great. I might just have to try it.
