- nhnFreespirit, on 12/20/2007, -0/+28For Amarok2, we are completely redoing the last.fm support by actually integrating much of the back end of their official open source player. This way we can sync with that and always keep up to date with the last.fm protocol. That should keep this unfortunate situation form happening again. Another benefit is that we get access to many more cool last.fm features. :-)
- ricercia, on 04/21/2008, -0/+17Another fantastic release by the Amarok team with some useful fixes! :-) Shame last.fm skip, love and ban still don't work though :-(
- theprophet84, on 12/20/2007, -4/+19I am at work and I am trying to go to the Amarok website and it is blocked. I work for the Air Force, aka the man. Why would you block a website for an open-source media player. Because open source is terrorism.... I ***** hate my job.
- Paleo, on 12/20/2007, -0/+15Yet another great release :D
Now, let see if our new server can handle that digg effect properly :0) - chriscantu, on 12/20/2007, -1/+10Amarok and Jalad ... at Tanagra?
- Ellipsys, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6I have an iPhone, and this will be the FIRST alternate media player/transfer program that works with it besides iTunes. I hope that there is tons of development - I hate iTunes with a passion, and want to be able to transfer my songs, videos, files and podcasts using a 3rd party program, like people could with previous iPod versions. Can anyone using this an an iPhone give me an overview of the current state of support? Thanks! I know that AmaroK is going on me Eee when it arrives!
- oldgeek, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6Yes I get it. when the walls fell.
- meepus, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6Amarok 2.0 is going to be my only music player on Windows once it's out. I don't think there's a problem with installing KDE4 in order for it to work, because I have plenty of hard-drive space. I just want Amarok :)
- nhnFreespirit, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6Yes! It is based on the KDE4 libraries which are in turn based on Qt 4.
- KDAY12, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Awesome! I have been spending far too much time in Windows ever since I got my Ipod Touch...
- thepresenceusa, on 12/20/2007, -2/+6Thank goodness I switched to *nix last year. Amarok is so much better than the Windows players. No adware/spyware/BSODware. It doesn't get any better than that.
Seriously, though, how can Amarok pack so many features into a player without BSODware, when the Win Players come crippled with such hidden problems. For instance, RealPlayer for Win, a player I used to love, comes with some aspects crippled unless you buy the full version, but it bogs down your pc and connection with the ad downloads.
Thankfully, the ports like Helix/Realplayer for Linux aren't causing such a load on the system, but the Linux version is a little short on functionality to say the least. Amarok is a great alternative to such projects, and has become my player of choice. - IEatHamburgers, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4I can't believe I actually got that. I stopped watching that show a couple years ago.
- subgeniusd, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Since I happen to be blasting Satellite Party with Amarok at the moment I was motivated to donate $25.00 to the cause. They have PayPal so no reason not to join me in supporting this fabulous product. :D
- andycr512, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4Can't we see at least one useful comment from you?
- Peterix, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3Automatic download is already there. Right click the podcast -> Configure -> Automatically scan for updates + Download when available.
There's a very nice program for vidcasts called Miro. It should be available from the repositories...
Also, you could add support for running a video player from Amarok with this script: http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=4 ... (I haven't done this myself, but the score it got on kdeapps is pretty high) - farghal, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Oh lighten up! I'm Egyptian and I think it looks cool :-)
- MattBD, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Nice one! I use Amarok in Kubuntu, and I love Last.fm, so I really can't wait for Amarok2 now!
- lemur, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Is Amarok 2 going to use qt4?
- eean, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1You can already right-click on podcasts and launch an external program, eg a video player.
Automatic download has been a feature for a few years. - KDAY12, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Although, maybe I spoke to soon. Amorok uses ligpod, which still appears to be patchy:
http://www.gtkpod.org/todo.html - markey, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Just don't use it, that's my advice. It's deprecated anyway, btw. We have removed it in Amarok 2. None of our devs was using the player window thingie lately.
- ommadawn, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Still, the detached player window slows down composite window managers (i.e. compiz fusion) when open, so what about that?
- gettarat, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Awesome! I have been spending far too much time in Windows ever since I got my Ipod Touch...
http://pyramidsofgiza.org/ - Eliseo, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I hope they've fixed the PlayCount issue with the iPods. Amarok is great but it has ***** up my playcounts twice :(
- andycr512, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1I disagree with your criticisms, but you might try Banshee. It works as you describe.
- jordoex, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Actually, foobar2000 is pretty nice for windows, using a couple plugins, I got it looking reminiscent of amarok. Nice for dualbooting and listening to stuff whilst gaming. Musikcube and wxMusik are pretty nice too.
- mfearby, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1I don't have access to Linux at the moment, so I can't check for myself right now, but the screenshots for Banshee don't seem to suggest it works like iTunes (insofar as the mini-browser "genre/artist/album" columns at the top). It seems like yet another music library program overly fond of tree views to the left and search filters at the top (I have no objection to the search filters, but tree views are god-awful, especially with large music collections).
- pgm_01, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Double click on the blue guy in Amarok to load all of the music listed under that artist in the artist/album view (double click to load the tracks from the serch results, too). The Group By feature at the top left (funnel icon) allows you to change the way the music is sorted and displayed. I think that Amarok is the most powerful player when it comes to sorting and management and unlike Itunes it is not a resource hog.
- balazsbela, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure that it won't take much disk space since you will only need the libraries, not the whole kde4 :)
- jordoex, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0Video's going to be supported in Amarok2, since they'll have phonon that'll easily take care of it for them.
And the problem with Itunes is that the interface is just too awkward (IMO) and it's a memory hog. - creepingdeathv2, on 10/07/2008, -0/+0seems to me like you just were too impatient with trying out and biased towards itunes and against any other music player.
"What could be more easier than clicking once on your genre, then your artist, then the album, double-clicking on the first song, then have iTunes play everything in the album until it reaches the end?"
you have that provision, there is a group by button , when you click on collections. which gives you such options.
"
I found Amarok to be the most complicated and clicky music manager out there. Having to constantly search for things then drag them to the right-hand pane before they'll play is highly irritating. I actually like iTunes and how it will just keep playing the next song in the currently-filtered list without having to drag everything into another list first.
"
if you wish your entire collection to be in a single playlist as itunes does you can simply drag the entire collection at once , then you can use the playlist search feature to search for the genre/artist/bitrate/album/year...and what not...the same search can be done in collection too.
the best thing about amarok is the context tab you can rate, add mood, view lyrics , add labels , clouds , tags , view artist info from wikipedia , add your playlist to last.fm , view intelligently generated favourate tracks from the artist currently playing , other albums from the same artist and soooo many technical features such as choosing sound engine (there are many many engines for linux you know), choosing sound setup , upmixing , downmixing , distorting , using scripts written in qt/python to futher enhance the rich features of amarok . The list can go on and on that is why we have documents that enlist the features of an application. And quite frankly , itunes simply doesnt even provide 10% of the features availble to amarok.
So what actually happened to you was that you were simply overwhelmed by the options offered by amarok and failed to see the simplicity it offers, because you dont have to be a computer wiz to set it all up and learn it , it hardly takes 10minutes to get comfortable with it all . So next time before critisizing a product , try it out throughly with an open mind please.
Thank you.
c_d @ fedora 9 - linux-2.6.25.14-108.fc9 - creepingdeathv2, on 10/07/2008, -0/+0amarok is a real good player...my friends who can't use it because they run windows are envious of me!! hehe!!
they are already waiting eagerly for amarok 2 to be released for windows!! I installed amarok 1.92 beta recently and showed them some of the cool features....both they and I are impressed!! goooo!! amarok!!
c_d @ fedora 9 - linux-2.6.25.14-108.fc9 - mfearby, on 12/20/2007, -1/+1I recently installed Kubuntu and checked out Amarok to see if it would be a decent replacement for iTunes (thinking of ditching XP eventually rather than going to Vista) and I found Amarok to be the most complicated and clicky music manager out there. Having to constantly search for things then drag them to the right-hand pane before they'll play is highly irritating. I actually like iTunes and how it will just keep playing the next song in the currently-filtered list without having to drag everything into another list first.
The tree-view on the left and the flat view are very poor replacements for iTunes' mini-browser at the top. What could be more easier than clicking once on your genre, then your artist, then the album, double-clicking on the first song, then have iTunes play everything in the album until it reaches the end?
Is there a decent iTunes-like program for Linux that *doesn't* require me to create hundreds of playlists or drag stuff into a separate area all the time before they'll play? - jordoex, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0It's an aquired taste, but I eventually came to love it. Kinda like 3dsMax -> Blender.
- jordoex, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0GIMP'd or Krita'd (or as everyone else would call it, Photoshopped)
- SunAlex, on 09/02/2008, -0/+0Another great release by the Amarok team with some useful fixes!

- malsaher, on 12/20/2007, -5/+0How come you guys managed to put amarok's logo on the Gr8 Pyramids of Egypt ?
I live nearby and I swear this is never real, is it ? - momsshizzle, on 12/20/2007, -27/+2Yessssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not.
