- Roger, on 11/01/2007, -7/+21"Perfect" must have a different definition with the Ubuntu crowd.
- schestowitz, on 11/02/2007, -1/+14Ubuntu Studio has a really nice default theme, which depending on taste, makes it more attractive than Ubuntu (to the eye anyway). Is it already known what theme will replace Human in 8.04? The Wiki suggests that brown/orange will be no more.
- twtmc, on 11/02/2007, -2/+12Yes, I am going to go out, buy windows vista for $500, put it in the drive, and find out my system is not compatible with vista. So, I am going to have to get a new computer. I do. It has vista home premium on it. But no worries, I bought vista! Alright, it's finally installed after blue screening 20 times. Oh *****! What's this? The proper drivers aren't available? Guess I need to go online and find them. Oh *****! There's no driver for my NIC card! Guess I will have to use my ubuntu computer that had all the drivers right out of the box to go get them. Okay, I now have drivers, time to play some games........*****. My games aren't compatible! Oh, no worries, here are the vista patches for them online! Now let's get some of those sweet, sweet games playing!!!......It's frozen. Oh well, I will just restart. Oooooo pretty colors! I'll just sign in here......*****! blue screen! Guess I paid $500 for nothing then.
There's the thing about Ubuntu. Even if you don't like it, you really didn't lose any money on it because you didn't pay for anything. And it eats up hard drives? Better tell my 5 year old ubuntu hard drive that! I guess it didn't get the memo. Ubuntu (and soooo many other fabulous linux distributions) also has more quality, open source (therefore free) software than windows, all available at the click of a button through Synaptic Package Manager. And thanks to 7.10, we have 99% of the drivers we need. I have installed it on about 2 dozen computers so far, and only 1 had a sound card that wasn't supported out of the box. I have never had a copy of windows work right out of the box without any installation of drivers. - tiax, on 11/01/2007, -0/+7actually, it's Howtoforge that uses "the perfect X" all over the place.
- andycr512, on 11/02/2007, -3/+9It's better than the alternative - I have to spend 8 hours getting Windows set up with drivers, development tools, etc before it's usable for my work. Going into synaptic, checking off build-essential, sun-java5, and a few development libraries, downloading Eclipse, clicking apply, and waiting a couple minutes certainly beats it.
- paku, on 11/01/2007, -3/+8I would replace that comment about Vista with XP instead. You Microsoft viral marketing slaves should probably try to be more subtle.
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5I don't get it..
- andycr512, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5There isn't one to my knowledge, but the development tools are so easy to set up there isn't much need. It takes about 5 minutes to grab build-essential and a few development libraries along with an IDE.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5Its not perfect, but it is a major step forward in making a Linux Desktop as usable out of the box for people interested in a desktop system or workstation configuration like this. Sure the i-Linux apps aren't going to be outshowing iLife '08 anytime soon much the less the pro apps by Adobe and Apple, but the fact that Ubuntu can do something at least competitive to some of the market's needs right now is promising for the future.
- Xlr8ed, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5I love Ubuntu, but how exactly is this 7 page guide making it "as usable out of the box for people"....it's 7 freaking pages of installing things....
- saifatlast, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3No. It was entirely non-obvious what was meant by that.
- Xlr8ed, on 11/01/2007, -3/+6Really misleading title......It's only accurate if you daily work is media creation, and then the guide still comes up a bit short.
- Gambra, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4Well that's kind of taking into consideration with the STUDIO bit, no?
- srg13, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3"Let Vista configure everything you need and away you go"
I've not experienced this - I have to run around to all my hardware manufacturers websites to download the drivers. With Linux on the the other hand, all my devices are installed out of the box, except for my graphics card, which I have to click 'Enable' in the Restricted Drivers manager.
"Or go with Ubuntu. Download the ISO, burn it, attempt to install (you might get lucky) and then spend a month configuring your operating system, obtaining drivers and tweaks you need to make it work properly. Poor hardware support, no quality software, and an endless supply of hard drives needed - because the OS will shorten the life of your drive like nothing ever seen before. :)"
Never had this experience either. In fact, I can't remember having one install fail.. See above for your 'bad hardware support' argument. When I say ALL my hardware works out of the box, I mean it - including my digital camera, wireless card, printer, sound card etc. I've never had to go looking for drivers, like I do with Windows either... Configuration and tweaking takes a little while, but it's around the same time it takes for Windows - and I get a much more personalized system - exactly how I like it.
And what the hell are you on about with the hard drive thing? How is that possible at all? Anyway, the _only_ hard drives I've ever had fail were in a Windows box, but they were poor quality anyway (never buying Maxtor again)... - inactive, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4It amazes me every time I see someone using a real-time kernel for non-appliance multimedia application. While a realtime kernel may have a place in the OS that drives a keyboard or a guitar filter, it is not necessary for production work at all. In fact, it's more a detriment to such work than anything.
- Gambra, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4Where's the proof that the OS will shorten the life span??
- rtjin, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Why-oh-why for H. sake do you Ubuntu fanbloggers always want to show the installation screenshots? It's always the same 10-20 minute exercise. It's about the desktop isn't it?
- srg13, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3"More BS, and by this statement I doubt you ever even used Vista.
...Vistas automatic driver search doesnt even compare to ubuntu, which is a pain in teh ass to find drivers for."
By that last statement, I doubt you've ever used Ubuntu (or at least a recent version) before - gummih, on 11/01/2007, -1/+4I hope it'll be called Rooter?
- cramstick, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2@beastlykings, 'Speaker for the Dead' by Orson Scott Card
@people feeling smug cause they get the reference, sorry for letting him on the joke =) - pinniger, on 11/01/2007, -2/+4does anybody know if there is a version of ubuntu like this only for developers, not media creation?
- sark666, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2The clock is how xp and linux differ in displaying time from gmt. Basically you'll reboot from one to the other and the time will keep changing. Not even sure if it's still an issue with the latest ubuntu but it used to be. And blaming ubuntu is technically incorrect, I forget the details as I dealt with it a couple of years ago, but supposedly, microsoft does time differently than everyone else. Like unix system going back years and years. Anyway, it's a quick fix, I can't recall search the ubuntu forums if you even still encounter that problem.
On installing yes you can have both. Just defrag your xp partition first before you let the partition editor in the ubuntu install have at your harddrive. If you're really paranoid, install something like partition expert in windows and shrink your ntfs part, and create a ext3 and a swap partition yourself. I'd say the bare minimum you should make the ext3 is 5 gigs (2 gigs required for the ubuntu install) and make the swap around 500 megs. More/less for the swap depending on the amount of ram you have, but 500 is pretty safe.
If, you run the ubuntu installer and see your existing partition labeled as 'unknown' instead of 'ntfs'. Stop right there, you have something wrong with your partition table (even if it seems problem free in windows). Investigate into fixing that problem first. Partition problems are the stuff of nightmares sometimes.
And as they always say, backup yo ***** before mucking with partitions, but I never do, and (knock on wood) haven't had any data loss yet. - cramstick, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2with regards to the clock issues, linux and windows just handle the system clock in different ways - windows always keeps the system clock at local time, whereas linux keeps the system clock at UTC and uses zone-information to work out the local time, the idea being that it doesn't matter where this UTC source comes from (system clock, network, etc.).
but linux will actually use either method (has to else it couldn't co-exist with windows), if i remember correctly there's an option on gnome's clock that says "System clock at local-time" or something. so the problem should be easily resolved, anyway. - mathmanjeffy, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2Nice reference (even if very few get it).
- zeroduck, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3After a few minutes of looking.. it sounds like the real time kernel is optional. A RT kernel is seriously not what you want to be looking at for a workstation. In terms of being able to process a lot of data (which you are going to want to do in media creation), RT is just not the right option for you.
RT is a great option for industrial automation, but I seriously doubt that you're going to use this distro for serious jobs. - takkuso, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2When he sets up the part to "Partition disks," is that allowing for dual booting? I wonder because he mentions later when talking about the clock "If there are other operating systems (i.e. windows)"
I'm an XP user who wants to try Ubuntu, but having never used it before, I'm wary of jumping straight in and overwriting XP only to find I don't like it and have lost everything.
A dual boot would be perfect. - cnosal, on 11/02/2007, -2/+4This is the exact same as http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_ubun ... from the same site, they just replaced the images with ubuntu studio skins.
- TLMonster, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I am still wating for something to work with.....
- zebbers, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1Ditto. It loads faster and is a breeze to setup. I would say the best app in the repos.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2I was referring more to the other dozens of bundled apps plus the ability to install all of these 3rd party addons very easily.
- paku, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1VirtualBox (apt-get install virtualbox) was more stable and handled desktop resizing better than vmware. I also like the "Shared Folder" feature, and the fact that it's easier to install/remove.
- AngryPenguin47, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1All you have to do is partition some space for ubuntu and install it, it wont touch XP. It will even give you an entry in the bootloader automagically for Windows.

- MWeather, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2"Why would you buy Vista if your system wasn't compatible in the first place?"
Because the sticker on the machine said it was compatible. It lied. - 000dom000, on 11/01/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't call it extending it for everyday work, depends what you do. All this is kinda basic stuff as well. Nothing that I haven't seen before. And what up with the endless supply of screenshots? Make a video for gods sake if you wanna show EVERYTHING you did.
- MWeather, on 11/01/2007, -1/+2"Why would you buy Vista if your system wasn't compatible in the first place?"
Because the sticker on the machine said it was compatible. It lied. - cstrippie, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1And off we go again feeding the troll....
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -2/+2"Yes, I am going to go out, buy windows vista for $500, put it in the drive, and find out my system is not compatible with vista."
-Why would you buy Vista if your system wasn't compatible in the first place?
"Alright, it's finally installed after blue screening 20 times."
-BS. I've installed vista on numerous computers, and although it wasn't as fast as installing ubuntu, it was a lot easier than installing XP. The whole process took about 20 minutes, and Ive yet to see a BSOD on any of the 20 or so machines I've installed it on.
"Oh *****! What's this? The proper drivers aren't available? Guess I need to go online and find them."
-More BS, and by this statement I doubt you ever even used Vista. It's automatically found EVERY driver on every computer I've installed it on. Even with XP I always had to go find drivers, and Vistas automatic driver search doesnt even compare to ubuntu, which is a pain in teh ass to find drivers for. - JustinJS, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1I would so use Ubuntu but there is one thing that it doesn't have that I need this is Skype with video support.
If it ever gets this I will switch forever, but until then im stuck with windows :( - inactive, on 11/01/2007, -2/+2oh dear... anyone get a mirror?
- MeatBiProduct, on 11/01/2007, -1/+1Linux and out of the box support doesn't exist. Either that or you purchased hardware from a safe hardware list. Original poster is right. Vista Ultimate is seemless and guess what, all the adobe software runs flawless.
If you bought vista and still had to run around for drivers you obviously didn't check windows update as that crap is integrated out of the box. maybe not for cheap hardware (which no one should use anyway) but all major brands are supported. I.E. nvidia, ATI, logitech, Asus, etc. etc.
I've had installs fail for Xubuntu and Ubuntu 7.x - then again I had horrible times installing XP / XP SP1 / XP SP2 - but this was generally on other peoples computers with cheap hardware. - prevajanje, on 11/01/2007, -0/+0still waiting for applications for linux to reach a critical mass (for me)
- Lingur, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Adobe Reader? Really? Is it the same bloated software as it is in Windows?
- digitalghost1, on 11/01/2007, -1/+0Text installer! I guess that takes care of Alternate CD as well.
- piesforyou, on 11/01/2007, -3/+1Human is a bit... zune.
- Mockylock, on 11/01/2007, -3/+1And I'm sure there are many alternatives to the 50 ***** programs used by any given company, for linux (without some dumbass port).
"Perfect"... ***** you. - markrrrrrrrrrr, on 11/01/2007, -9/+4I installed Ubuntu on my year old Acer lap top and it is _dead_in_the_water_ . I really don't have time to spend a week fiddling with it to get the wifi working. I wish I had never heard of Ubuntu.
- Bossakungen, on 11/01/2007, -6/+0Gotta love Ubuntu!
