Let me guess... its an article that takes info from the official Ubuntu page about the new features:
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta#New%20 ...
...and adds a bunch more text, without adding any more significant information. Yup... that's pretty much it.... tho in some cases, they do go into a few more details (Gnome section is pretty decent).
Whats up with the 'Config-less X.Org' section at the end too. Hasn't this been a feature in Ubuntu (and a lot of distros) for some time now? I'm sure this 'Config-less' claim isn't true for everyone tho.. as I'm sure some people with less-supported hardware will still have to modify xorg for things like x360 controllers, some joysitcks, and even just to do something like tweak the nvidia settings that aren't accessible though the gui. - zwaldowski, on 10/26/2008, -1/+18Actually, yes! It's a Broadcom chip! Through collaboration between Dell and Broadcom, there's now a new native (non-ndiswrapper) driver for most consumer Broadcom chips. It'll appear in the Restricted Driver manager now just like a Conexant modem or NVIDIA card, all you need is an ethernet connection once to activate it.
- priegog, on 10/26/2008, -0/+17OK I´m gonna use digg to promote this. There´s a crytical bluetooth bug that needs to be adressed but isn't getting much attention. Intrepid testers, please check that this bug applies to you too and vote it. Basically what it is is that it won't allow you enter a manual passkey when pairing devices, and instead gives you a random one, and thus those bluetooth devices without a keyboard (GPS units, bluetooth headsets and headphones...) won't be able to be used.
The bug can be found at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284994 - scabbers, on 10/26/2008, -7/+18That's toilet paper, not wallpaper.
- zwaldowski, on 10/26/2008, -2/+11It's fixed now, jackass.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -3/+12xorg.conf doesn't need to plagued my life anymore?
I might finally install Ubuntu for good in that case. The minute I have to open xorg.conf though, I'm back in Windows... I hate that freaking file - thewump, on 10/26/2008, -0/+8No it didn't - it replaced it. xorg is no longer the center of the universe for Ubuntu, with device config now being taken care of by Hal. You might have had some issues like i did, but that was with the BETA - that's what it's for.
I'm using the Release Candidate now, and all is good. - Sublex, on 10/26/2008, -6/+13Everything you need to know: It's better than Windows or Mac.
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -0/+7Serves you right to get ***** labeled xtreme gamer. That ***** is nothing but snake oil and stuff half the price does as much if not more.
- ElectricKetchup, on 10/26/2008, -0/+7Yay Dell!
- ReidFleming, on 10/26/2008, -1/+7I don't think it would take any of that. What it needs is a few commercials. Here's a sample text:
"Would you like to run a computer without having to pay Microsoft or Apple for the privilege? For nearly everything that the average user does - internet, e-mail, chat, and office applications - you can use Ubuntu. Listen to these folks: 'I put the disk in my computer and one hour later, I was surfing the internet and IM-ing my friends'. " - ReidFleming, on 10/26/2008, -0/+6I'm not necessarily condoning how that was written but I think his (?) reaction was due to your posting a seemingly-knowledgeable question without knowing that you shouldn't post it. I'm not sure if that came out right but, essentially, you sound like you should have known enough to go find out if you even needed to write that.
- twiztidsinz, on 10/26/2008, -1/+6And Kubunutu's bluetooth is totally ***** so they'll have to use bluez-gnome on KDE.
Seriously.. what the ***** happened? talk about dropping the ball big time. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280997 - ReidFleming, on 10/26/2008, -1/+6You can make it have 'bling' if that's your thing. http://www.gnome-look.org/
- zwaldowski, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5As to your last paragraph... no. That's the new feature. :-D
- Kamujin, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Nothing ironic about it. Thats just standard operating procedure for Apple.
- MattBD, on 10/26/2008, -0/+5Yes, there is. Ardour, Rosegarden and Jokosher are all supposed to be good. You might want to try Ubuntu Studio instead of vanilla Ubuntu. The homepage is at http://ubuntustudio.org/
- DteK, on 10/26/2008, -2/+6yeah, why dont you just stick to your macbook
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4If you explain a little bit better what you're asking I'd be glad to help you out. Where is this downloadable from, what type of file is it, etc.
- thewump, on 10/26/2008, -1/+5All I can say is that I'm currently using the Release Candidate from Friday, and everything just works. NO tweaking on an HP laptop and I have: nvidia driver hardware acceleration, broadcom wireless modem working, built in webcam working, sound working, flash working, and even the holy grail of suspend and hibernate. Best release yet - and quick too.
- blackturtleus, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4Does anyone know if there is any video or music editing software available for Ubuntu? I love garageband on my Mac and iMovie is good enough to get by with, but I've never come across good video or music editing software on Linux. I have two PCs devoted to Linux (Ubuntu on one and Fedora on the other) and look forward to the day when I can do music and video editing on them!!!
- Kamujin, on 10/26/2008, -0/+4I understand your point, but there are many changes in the these release that are not so obvious.
I think the Ubuntu method is to have more frequently releases so major changes arrive more gradually with less negative impact. Additionally, its not uncommon to delay or skip a version if you don't desire the new features. - ElectricKetchup, on 10/26/2008, -1/+4I thought they already said that they were going to fix this as soon as the could after the release?!?
- solarwind24, on 10/26/2008, -1/+4What the heck? It actually looks pretty decent - compared to the former Ibex wallpaper (the one with circles)...
- cwcentral, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2Wait until Nov--openSuse and fedora have major releases.
I think with sax2, a much faster yast2, integrated/optimize versions of Gimp, OOo, yum, integrated virtual box, Mono 2.0, FOSS Java, and the web-based build service... openSuSE's going to take the cake for Linux in 2009, despite the Microsoft legal issues. That distro (11 and 11.1) looks way more polished than any debian distro I've seen in a long time. - hsurfer, on 10/27/2008, -0/+2don't try ubuntu 8.10 if you have an unsupported nvidia card (like my geforce 4mx)
- jetboyterp, on 10/26/2008, -0/+2Ubuntu/Linux question...
Anyone know how to get "RSS Owl" to run? It can be downloaded, but won't run.
??? - lopla, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1I love ubuntu 8.04 AMD64 but one thing and one thing only drives me insane and that is flash issues. My flash will work for 30mins or so then i start getting grey boxes instead. I have to restart my browser 2-3-4 times to get it working again, I have no idea why. I've tried uninstalls, re-installs same thing. Will 8.10 work better for flash?
- jetboyterp, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Downloadable from RSSOwl.org
There is a Linux version, but can't get it to run. It's an RSS feed.
I've tried the Ubuntu forums, and seems a couple others have this problem, but no one can seem to rectify it. - johndavidjack, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1Wait, there is MORE???
I thought the 6000 articles about Ubuntu covered just about everything... - Invid, on 10/26/2008, -1/+2"Is 'LANjackal' being offensive? Report it"
No...just stupid. - inactive, on 10/26/2008, -1/+2Thats ironic. You need Dell to help get apple hardware working on linux :p
- grungegbunny, on 10/26/2008, -0/+1mmm.. Gnome improvements.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/26/2008, -1/+2Bahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaha! What a TROLL!
- zwaldowski, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1Dell uses Broadcom chips, and they "pushed" Broadcom into developing a driver that works.
- KillerKellerjr, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1I guess I will be left behind by Ubuntu, I don't care if it's Nvidia's fault but its Ubuntu's problem, I too have a GeForce 4mx. I will stick with 8.04 but hopefully they fix the Nvidia issue or I'm off to another distro that will support my older Nvidia card. Very disappointing news as I may even go back to Windows XP since they still support it! Seriously get with the program here this is a major issue......
- Ademan, on 10/27/2008, -0/+1I don't understand PCLinuxOS users... they seem to be to Ubuntu as linux users are to Windows and OSX... They (the minority of vocal zealots) are constantly trying to tear down Ubuntu and save people from the "horrors" of Ubuntu with the light of PCLinuxOS. I just don't understand, users of other distros seem to be far less bitter about Ubuntu's success, and more likely to realize that though distros can be wildly different, we (linux users) are all in the same boat.
http://www.pclosmag.com/html/Issues/200709/page02. ...
This is my absolute favorite... As someone who enjoys trying different distros to try and find the best fit for myself, I was poking around the pclinuxos website and found this little gem (at the time the magazine was linked to directly if i remember correctly) Not only was it full of completely vague crap and an outcome that completely and utterly supported the intended message without any variance, but I had just read earlier that week, a test that linux magazine conducted (or linux format, I always get those two confused, and I only read them on the newsstands...) where they gave ubuntu to three people from different backgrounds (i believe there was a developer, a designer, and a casual user or something like that) and in a rather detailed fashion described the users experience, both good and bad, and the "verdict" was not nearly as dire as that pclosmag article would have you believe, in fact it was quite a positive article... Someone's pulling ***** out of their ass, and I think I know who... - pHreaksYcle, on 10/26/2008, -1/+2You're an *****.
- nmanguy, on 10/26/2008, -2/+2Good article MaximumPC.
- randumbusername, on 10/26/2008, -5/+5im critical of ubuntu and linux but secretly i cheer on both's success. step it up please. if people are going to be won over it's going to take a major overhaul, up front innovation, user friendliness, attractiveness and a platform third parties would develop for.
- Lucian0, on 10/26/2008, -3/+2Installed Ibex and it f'd up my xorg
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -3/+2Eh. Already using it.
- Horace, on 10/26/2008, -4/+3It's still poop colored.
- ExtraEye, on 10/26/2008, -3/+2I must say something. It's cool there's a new release every now and then so the system never grows old on you. On the other hand... There's hardly any progress with those releases. Some changes in the software and a small improvement/fix here and there. I'd say windows' service packs make about the same amount of change.
I wouldn't say to stop releasing new versions, but maybe it would be better to change the system more over longer periods of time (like once a year). - Disease, on 10/26/2008, -4/+2It doesn't tell me how to make my Broadcom 4318 work.
- kystorms, on 10/26/2008, -8/+5this is the BEST digg I have ever read , the most useful information THANKS!!!! :-)
- seandfeeney, on 10/26/2008, -4/+1AWW HELL NAW!
- inactive, on 10/26/2008, -4/+0Thought they had moved to http://www.tacky-look.org
But hurray for half ass, half finished OSX/Vista clone themes and icon sets.
To the point, the default 1995 appearance is about as far as most will ever bother and isn't cutting it. - LANjackal, on 10/26/2008, -6/+1Including the fact that 1)Doing anything more advanced than email and web browsing in Ubuntu is a hackathon 2) PCLinuxOS is a much more user-friendly distro 3)SUDO is even more annoying than UAC
