- Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26:-) I use Linux and thats all that matters to me.
- sdubois92, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20You can have both Windows and Linux on your computer. And when it boots, you choose which one to load. I would recomend Ubuntu for first time use.
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -1/+13"I use Linux and thats all that matters to me."
Maybe if you're an accomplished programmer with tons of free time. For me, the more people that use Linux the better, as it leads to more development and support and a better overall experience. The fact that I can google "Ubuntu [a problem I'm having]" and get an answer is what led me to finally move away from Windows. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15The entire business industry.
And @samadam, stop trolling. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Major corporations placing their trust in an open-source OS is huge. People translate their worktime computing experiences to their personal lives, and if they enjoy Linux at work, they may be more apt to use it at home. More Linux = less Windows. Personally, I refuse to use any flavor of Windows in my house because I've spent nearly twenty years fighting it trying to get something done at work. I employ OS X and have recently been learning my way around Ubuntu, and will be putting YDL on my PS3 this weekend.
Also, how's that Digg username working out for you there, buddy? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Ford cars and McD's hamburgers are not free. Linux is.
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm reaping the benefits.
My Gentoo box runs smoothly, unencumbered by the crapware that Windows seems to get. Tell that to my Windows installation, on which Ad-aware caught 98 items, despite my continual maintenance of a firewall, anti-virus, anti-adware, and ant-spyware scanners.
Sounds like a benefit to me.
(Side note: Before you responde, yes, any system can get bogged down if the user is stupid. But, assuming user competency, Linux wins). - bejayel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@samadam
Not much reassuring needed. Since i switched to linux i havent had a virus. No random computer activity. No spyware or adware. No ***** web browser. No need for constant backups cause i never knew what was going to happen.
Yup, i gave up alot. - unruled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4actually McDonalds already uses linux... at least in the netherlands
can't get my phone to send the pic through IR :/
anyway, its used on the screens they have running the adverts. - mr1337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sorry for comment jacking.
Duggmirror caught it.
http://duggmirror.com/linux_unix/Everyone_Uses_Linux/ - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You must be a busy boy, since you're obviously employed by all of these companies (Palm, Nokia, etc.) and know exactly what OS' are being run in their day-to-day operations.
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They're not free, but I'll bet their cheaper and provide better service because of it...
Okay, maybe not Ford and McDonald's. Software can't help poor management sometimes. But still, a company that effectively employs Unix Systems (or Unix Like, ala Linux, BSD) generally is more effective and secure. Save some cost on software, lose some on training, gain massive improvements in security.
Hell, look at that thing called paypal. Ever heard of it? Runs very well on a bunch of cheap computers. Their services would be considerably more expensive if they ran it on a big $3 million machine, or whatever. Same goes for Google. - Felshadow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4i used that all the time, Ubuntu *anything* and your problems fixed, although im the same "i only use windows to game" boat :(
- samadam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@bejayel:
Not trying to troll. It was the truth in my case. I found myself using linux and I realized that I didn't really need it. I had to search for fun things I could do with it because, in truth, i was totally happy with windows. I never got a virus or had a crash in windows either.
Now I just use a mac. - KayIslandDrunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I with you guys and run linux on all my machines except for my main desktop. Sadly, my RAID card isn't supported and I'm forced to run vista. But for everything else a search like "hdtv overscan correction ubuntu" in google is my personal pot of gold
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I did mean repulsive ... and I missed the fact that it was his daughter OMG! That makes it even worse."
your not so much of a "swell guy" as your handle suggests.... - AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found dual booting to be really productive actually. I used to waste a LOT of time gaming. Now I dual boot, with Linux as the primary option. So I tend to get a lot more done, and reboot afterwards, to game; if I have any time left.
(Of course, this is more of a behavioral thing on my part, but still.) - AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So I won't get to see a BSoD on the advertising bill boards anymore? Awww....
- cheshire137, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just because a company's products are not based on Linux does not mean that a company can't run Linux on their web servers, in their offices, on their mainframes... For example, checking netcraft.net/whats for palm.com shows that Palm is using Linux on their web server.
- cousinzoidfarb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dshpls, I'm an engineer, at work (taking lunch), sitting at my desk, and my desktop runs Linux (and only Linux). The next two people closest to me run Linux (and only Linux). Further down the hall (I'm no longer sure who is closest), some run Linux, some run Windows, some run OS X. Most of these people, I believe, log into Linux or Unix machines to do their work. I'm not sure where you get the idea that no (engineering) business uses Linux desktops. However, I don't know of any such business that uses Linux exclusively.
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True. But I think mostly the point is to start making it aware that Linux works out great for businesses too. Just say we're trying to fight the FUD Microsoft releases with their "White Papers."
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By that logic, why isn't my screwdriver properly removing that bent nail?
GNU/Linux tends to tow the line of Freedom (as in speech) of Software. That's great and all for end users. And to some extent I can see your point, businesses don't care about Freedom of Software, they just want it to work. And low and behold, Linux also tends to just work. Call it a miracle.
And it works great for most users to. I know some like to pull that "But what about games?" line, which is why I said most. Not everyone games. - Wootery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not on your desktop perhaps, but apparently you use the Internet, so you have quite a dependence on Linux.
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True. The Chinese Government likes it. But at the same time, this doesn't really say that much at all. The Indian Government is working on using it, along with the Brazil Government.
It's actually in the article that defined Open Source. I can't remember the exact working, but the effect was "Freedom of Use. You cannot dictate who can use this software." The man who wrote it (cannot remember his name right now, sorry), said something to the effect of "My example is that you must allow your software to be used by an Abortion Clinic, and an anti-Abortion Organization."
Basically: One of the freedoms is that you can use it, even if we're politically against you. So saying that Communists use it really doesn't carry much weight, as we can't control if they use it or not. And at the same time, many non-communists use it too. So, call it apolitical. - cheshire137, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Haha, actually it's a father and me, his *daughter*.
- Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you probably do. it is probably embedded into some piece of electronics you own.
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ok fine. digg me down. I'm saying linux is cool, and its easy to play around with on either a PC or a Mac.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Uh, and commercial software doesn't allow the same freedom? "
Commercial software ties your choices to your bank account balance (see: Windows Vista's 'options'). - orvtech, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Gentoo Linux on:
- my xbox
- my desktop
- my home file server
- my laptop.
- my linksys NAS (aka NSLU2) running services and a downloaded machine :) i even made a website for it and it is been hosted there http://www.orvtech.com - cheshire137, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a big difference between open source software and freeware. Just because it is open source does not mean it is free in cost. There's nothing wrong with paying for software, and open source does not say that there is.
- dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Do you have linux on your auto-spammer/self promotion computer too?
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I'm a mac guy myself, but i like to play with the new linux distros that come out. Parallels makes it super-easy to try them out. Create a new VM, point it to the install ISO, and off you go.
- SwellGuy007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I call *****.
This article reads like a really cheesy web ad. What father and son actually sit around emailing lists of Linux users and lamenting their friend's views of Linux? C'mon. This is either ***** or we have met the 2 most anally repulsive people in the world.
Buried for the pure ***** it smells like. - Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4@AshtonKe
Those 98 items were probably just tracking cookies. You still likely have those on your linux box, unless you delete your cookies after a browsing section. - ElitistSnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, it's Microsoft who limits your choices based on your income, thanks to its new avaricious licensing fees tied to Vista. You can thank Steve Balmer for Vista's ridiculous tiered price scheme. They should have left things as they were with XP; one version for consumers, one version for business. Now we are burdened with what is it... six different versions of Vista? Crazy!
- AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We have been. If you had taken a chance to look instead of being a troll, you would know. But at the same time, improving it is not enough. There are areas where Linux is proven to be considerably better than Microsoft (Servers specifically). And in some areas of desktop use, Linux tends to be better than Windows (not all, but we're working on it). But making it "Better" is not good enough. It takes advertising too.
By your logic, you should be shouting the same thing at the "The 'WOW' starts now!" commercials on the TV. - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is a stupid argument. It's like claiming I use dentist's drills because I go to the dentist, or that I use cash registers because I go to the shops, or telephone switchboards because I occasionally phone people.
You use these *services* or *companies* which just so happen to use Linux - Using a TiVo isn't like running [a Linux distro], using a kiosk isn't the same as compiling software, etc etc..
On a purely technical point, yes, I suppose using the internet, or in some what interacting with a comapnies back-end computer system constitutes "using" Linux/BSD/etc, but not by choice - Your primary intention of using that company/service, not using Linux. I don't "use" a switchboard to call someone, I dial the number and it magically the other persons phone rings..
As for the companies like ILM using Linux - For one, they have large R&D departments, and many coders capable of writing code for Linux, their using it for very specialized tasks where being able to easily write custom software for the OS is a huge benefit. And even still, I imagine a lot of their 3D modelers, riggers compositors etc either don't care, or don't know that the software their using runs on Linux - They're doing what they need to do, Linux just so happens to be used to run some of the software. - AshtonKe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'd hope not. It's silly for us to claim we're for freedom, only to digg down anyone who disagrees.
However, we are fanatical. We will argue about this, trust me; I've seen me do it (Thank you Ron White). Just, don't confuse us digging down the trollers, with us digging down those who disagree. - eleventybillion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think you meant 'anal retentive', but repulsive also applies, I'd say.
"Hey dad, my friends are calling me names cause I use Linux!"
"Let's prove how ub0r g33k we are son, and then they'll resp3kt u 4 being 1337!"
"Woot!"
Sad exchange, if authentic. Even more depressing if this is fictional. - ElitistSnob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@cheshire137
The point is he didn't reference in what way Linux is being used. Saying "Palm uses Linux" when its role is simply running a webserver is a grotesque exaggeration because it has no relation to the company's products or its operations. Such a blanket statement unfairly grants Linux far more credit than it deserves. - rento, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah everyone uses Linux without knowing. Then one day you decide to install it on your laptop and you go crazy trying to find suitable drivers.
So, get angry because I don't know computing, because there are 100s of different distributions and you wish they just made one or two or accuse all computing industry to conspire against Linux?
I didn't know which to pick, so I went back to windows - SwellGuy007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I did mean repulsive ... and I missed the fact that it was his daughter OMG! That makes it even worse.
- nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Seriously. So these companies use linux somewhere in the bowels of their operations. They probably also use Windows NT4, OS 9, and other outdated and crappy OS's. That doesn't mean I am going to switch to them. I love linux, I also love windows. Who cares what other people use provided whatever you use works for you as best as it can.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4BFD.
Looking forward to your next great article: "List of companies that use post-it-notes". - ElitistSnob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@AshtonKe
"Freedom of Use. You cannot dictate who can use this software."
Uh, and commercial software doesn't allow the same freedom? I don't recall Microsoft or Apple dictating whom may use their products. I'm sure the Ku Klux Klan is powered by Windows, right along with the Catholic church. Sounds like Richard Stallman's scaremongering..."Don't trust proprietary software". - Slacker1031, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I guarantee any comment that even hints at linux not being absolutely necessary will be dugg down.
This shows the close minded attitude the linux community really has, burying this comment proves exactly what i said. - philippbock, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Inaccurate. I don’t.
- spd998, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2You should feel dumb. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!
- Bols2000, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Communists use Linux.
- ElitistSnob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0But it's Free! That's all that matters. *sarcasm*
I'll never understand this bizarre sense of entitlement open-source advocates poses. What's wrong with paying for software? Seriously, do you guys not have jobs? Can't you afford such things?
Apple introduces a great new operating system: I go to the Apple Store... buy a copy... install it on my Mac... I'm happy. To GPL zealots looking for another freebie, you would think this were criminal. I wish your employer treated you with the same logic..."What!?!?! You expect to be paid for your work"? -
