- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28holy nuts, you never spelled the name of the product right once. You slaughtered both "Ethereal" and "Wireshark".
- TestFar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"it is easier to explain to my boss"
just tell them its free... - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10What are you even saying? Did you read anything? Are you aware of anything?
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12What's in a name? Would a packet by any other name smell as sweet...to a sniffer...of another name...
- buck09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Since the project is open source, his former employer could branch off the codebase and release a better/suckier packet sniffer under the same name, banking on the brand recognition they've gained over the years.
- dgooding, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Why not "eh THEER ee ul" ?
- dorthensensens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I like ethereal and use it on my work networks. As a security tool, it's top notch. As for the name...I think Ethereal has now jumped the wireshark...
- autocracy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Both Fink and Darwin ports package Ethereal for OS X
- ajwillys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I always called it "e thee re al" (four syllables), as in: Characterized by lightness and insubstantiality; intangible.
Although, I was the only one at work, everyone else called it "Ether reel" which makes no sense
EDIT: Two people beat me to it. - RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Tweidle
WireShark
pronunciation: weer-esh-ar-key - sl4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just completed my senior project at UC Davis two days ago on wireless networking security--I had no idea that Winpcap development was taking place down two ***** blocks away from me this whole time.
- trimidium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good, now my drink is the only thing named Ethereal...
Ethereal
1 Shot Turl Absinthe
1 Shot E&J Brandy
1 Can 7up
1 Maraschino Cherry
½ Packet Poprocks
1tsp or so Sugar
3 Shakes of Bitters
-Get bitchin’ cool cup. Mine is from the Safe House in Milwaukee and has hidden secrets to it if you look close enough.
-Add Some of the poprocks to bottom of the cup
-Add Shot of Absinthe and the E&J to cup
-Fill cup with as much 7up as you can fit
-Drop in Cherry and some more Poprocks
-Add Sugar, and immediatelyy add Bitters
For Best Results:
-Serve without ice (trust me, trial and error)
-Only serve to those who are using Hottub.
Expected Effects:
-SUPREME body relaxation. The hottub will speed up the effects AND the relaxation
-Amazing mind clarity. I have never felt myjudgmentt off on this, but rather tend to write interesting blog posts.
-Overall Drinkfascinationn, Between the 2 carefully selected alcohol’s, the hottub, and the poprocks, your mind and body will be on sensory overload. Folks, this is no snake oil, but yet the same may make you feel like a million bucks. - canon66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think he was refering to the fact that there's no cocoa front end for it like Nmap has. Which is a good point, but you can still just compile it and run it in X or, as you said, use Fink or Darwin Ports until someone takes it upon themselves to build that cocoa interface.
- finite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2NIS and their baby Ethereal Software just got pwned by the GPL. All they have is the trademark, which they'll most likely pay somebody to apply to future versions of Wireshark now.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I compiled it in OS X and used the aquaextremesunken GTK theme - it looks nearly like OS X.
- r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6This is interesting. He doesn't have the rights to the name Ethereal, but he owns the product, now known as 'wireshark'? It seems to me like the name 'ethereal' pretty much useless to NIS now that everyone knows the product formerly known as ethereal is now WireShark so why not just give over the rights to the name as well? I hope this break from NIS doesn't affect the quality of their work because this is a great network monitoring tool and I wish Mr. Combs all the best.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So how does he branch off the developers? Doesn't work that way, does it? Talent is unique.
Hope these guys set up an RSS feed. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1***** out of luck now huh, ha... I would love to meet up with the Winpcap devel team!
- Duncan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21) Blog Spam
2) Bastardisation of far too many words. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2dgooding, that's how I pronounce it too.
- ohsoserial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Read the article. The "owner" is moving companies and handing off the development of the software to the community. The core developers of the software are not working on it anymore.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Ha... good one.
- jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5its one of my favorite tools.. just wish they had a nice OSX version :(
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What about "Eetheereeal"?
- benplaut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1wait... why were the first two posts buried? did i miss something?
- ohsoserial, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Ethereal is one of the better packet sniffer/network traffic monitoring tools out there, and I'm sorry to see it go through this change. The program was kicking ass with what it was doing, and while I understand the need to change things because of the legality of the situation, fixing something that isn't broken will eventually end up being broken.
I hope it works out for them, since their creation as helped me troubleshoot multitudes of issues, but I hope that this transfer of ownership and core developers doesn't gimp it. - eonblue, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@pcgeek
I don't think it gets any easier then Ethereal. - Tweidle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1At long last this will lay to rest the debate between "Ether reel" and "Ether el"
Unless someone can come up with an alternate pronunciation of WireShark.
-Yes I know its "Ether el" - Iam8up, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1I used Ethereal a lot yesterday. Even figured out you can tap into VoIP calls and save them into an audio format.
- dave_colorado, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2But I can still use Ethereal at open wireless networks like coffee shops and snoop on the network, right?
- leohart, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Wireshark is not a bad name, signaling its potential "shark" while remaining good-intention "white".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+2nope dont like it one bit. Ethereal has many uses for the forces of good and is pretty neutral name. Wireshark sounds like a hacker tool and while i know it has that use too, it is easier to explain to my boss why we need a product named Ethereal than one known as Wireshark. A rose by any other name DOESN'T smell as sweet.
*** dont complain to jdavid about wrieshark.. blame qwerty.. i do that all the time especially with ir.. shouldnt digg ignore trailing whitespace? Dont like that either.. Do not write in space below. - jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -30/+2i dont know of an easier network analyzer, ereal rocked and i am sure that the new blood in and on wireshark will invigorate new ideas and features.
PS i love the namechange, i actually think it is better than etherreal. casual surfers beware of the "wrieshark" - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -36/+6Good, maybe we'll see some improvements to ethereal. It's got a nice interface IMHO, but I'm sure it's not too easy to use for some beginners.
