- wandm, on 05/15/2008, -4/+49I wouldn't call that "stupidity". It just goes to show how Microsoft's monopoly dominates the desktop to such extent that most people are not even aware of the alternatives. It's inevitable that some people end up to Linux forums to ask for help on their Windows problems.
Well, it nevertheless seems that awareness of alternatives is slowly sinking in to the population... - badjoke, on 05/15/2008, -1/+41Anyone else annoyed by the overuse of this retarded "Epic Win/Fail" thing?
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -12/+46I'm sorry, but laughing at someone who has little technical knowledge of computers is LAME.
- Senn, on 05/15/2008, -6/+40Because people in the free software community are mostly genuinely friendly? I doubt Microsofties would help a Linux user out in the same way if the situation was reversed.
- jer2eydevil88, on 05/15/2008, -0/+15I wouldn't doubt its validity... not with people like the City Manager of Tuttle Oklahoma threatening to call the FBI on the CentOS team a while back.
http://www.centos.org/modules/news/article.php?sto ... - neodude237, on 05/15/2008, -5/+23What's an Ubuntu?
- gigatwo, on 05/15/2008, -0/+15Believe it or not, there are technically challenged individuals that still know how to access forums. My guess is they googled something about their wireless card and would up with a link to the forums. Either that, or it is as fake as you claim it to be.
- EuphoricAgony, on 05/15/2008, -3/+15Buried for the title.
- ninja0, on 05/15/2008, -6/+21Sounds fake, but if true thats effin hilarious
- crownedgriffin, on 05/15/2008, -1/+12Buried. Obvious troll is obvious.
- n0odles, on 05/15/2008, -4/+17Yes you should be using Ubuntu.
- Planets, on 05/15/2008, -3/+14Quoting the guy in a signature and labeling it as "EPIC FAIL" is friendly?
- sq377, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314458
Microsoft has an article for Linux. You may or may not find it helpful though. - trotskyist, on 05/15/2008, -1/+9My Chinese Zodiac calendar says that this is the year of Ubuntu.
- jamdogg, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8No it's like laughing at someone who walks into Ceasars palace and demands to see Ghengis Khan.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Yes. Lets hope it goes out of style soon and takes "ftw" with it...
- sq377, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8What's baffling, is that if this is real... Why did this person ask for windows help on the ubuntu forums while not knowing what ubuntu is?
- BananaGrabber, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8It's a troll.
- Heywoodj, on 05/15/2008, -2/+8The comments were polite and helpful on the forum so yea I'll go with friendly.
The Ubuntu forums are doing a lot to help reverse the stereotype of Nix people being a bunch of elitist RTFM pricks.
Rock on. - bjornski, on 05/15/2008, -3/+10The only way you can get any information out of a Linux user beyond "read the man pages" is to tell them that something can't be done in Linux.
Then the ***** will line up 10 abroad and 5 deep to show you that yes, it can be done, and the benefits from 30 different techniques of doing it.
It probably won't get your question answered, but it's funny as hell to watch in action. - bratterscain, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5You discovered the unspoken technique. I used to politely ask but after phrasing my questions like, 'Windows is superior because I can do ....... and there's no way to do it in Linux' I found I'd get more responses. That was as a noob though. Anymore, I just use google and genuinely ask. It's free tech support, a free OS, and at the risk of sounding cheesy, the last thing I want to do anymore is denigrate it and the community.
- inactive, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6epic fail? the guy has a computer problem, probably googled "fix computer" or something similar and found those forums.
i applaud the couple people that told him to post a dump, or how to fix it.. but people like "Tux.Ice" who posted:
"POker Fce - heres how to fix the problem, i had the exact same one
Go To: ubuntu.com and download the .iso
THen: burn the .iso to a cd
After That: Run The CD and install Ubuntu!"
is just plain rude.. and really makes the ubuntuforums look childish.. The guy can barely run Windows, think he'll be able to Run or even install Linux?.. Probably end up destroying his windows partition and recovery partition, in which he'll be *****.
/rant off - Shootfast, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6More importantly, what does it eat?
- bjornski, on 05/15/2008, -2/+8It doesn't help that the only exposure to the Mac OS is that douchebag Justin Long making snary comments about his hip, trendy machine without actually saying a god-damned thing about why it's better.
Same with the latest iPod commercials. Don't say 1 ***** word about your product, play something hip and trendy in the background, and let the image do all the work.
Macs aren't succeeding because they're better machines. They're succeeding because they have a trendier ad department. - ClockworksNine, on 05/15/2008, -1/+7It's pretty obvious this is fake... If he never heard of Ubuntu, why would he post in their forums, or any Linux forums? I'm pretty sure a non-techie would just end up calling Verizon or take it to a Geek Squad or something to get it repaired.
- ClockworksNine, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5I suppose that is possible, I forgot about how people will search for the problem online and stumble into a forum (has happened many times to me - it's usually the first result anyways).
- daftman, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Well I think he has sufficient knowledge to sign up to an ubuntu forum and post a question.
He just didn't have the patience to find out the relevancy of his question.
I think he google around and find that the ubuntu forum occurs very often on the result list and thought it's a general help site - ninja0, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5Still, forums have topics. And thats off topic. I used to get bitched at for that in the past :P lol.
- Zlorp, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4"There is no end some people's stupidity"
careful what you say... you were the one who got trolled. - Roshz, on 11/27/2008, -1/+6I don't understand how someone could end up on a forum like that, be able to post such a message and seriously not know what they're doing. It's practically unbelievable.
- CanIGetAWitness, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6He finally gets his Ubuntu question answered on page 3. Seriously, can you imagine the problems this user would have trying to set up Ubuntu. It is good to see that almost half of the forum wants to assist while they rest want to make jokes.
God Speed. - equinoxChild, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3no but if you have the technical knowledge to create an account on a forum to post on it, you should have the technical common sense to find out what that forum is about. I'm not going to ask for C++ help on a "latest soccer discussions" forum.
- digitaldivinci, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5I was curious of that as well, so I ran a few simple queries that he might have used. I am going to assume he calls it a wireless card and doesn't feel that has multiple meanings :P "Wireless Card Erorr" gives a link to the forums on about the third or fourth result.
Also, any combination of similar searches always returned something related to linux, normally the fedora forums. - abhiroop, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I used to ask for help in ubuntu (still do to some extent) forums, and now I am the one providing it. I try and be as polite in asking for and giving responses!
- possiblyneil, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4Say it once once, why say it again?
- Aitese, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Look...the natural thing is to assume the guy is joking...which I'm guessing half the people in the forum did. The other half where actually very helpful, so what's with all this talk of elitism. They really didn't need to help as it was way off topic...but in the end he is given ideas on how to solve the issue. If it's a joke than take it as such. you can't assume it's a joke then get incensed with the reactions to it.
- Tenlow, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3It's whats in line right before the Ubunthree. I'm waiting for Ubunten myself.
- wastingdeath, on 05/15/2008, -1/+5At risk of sounding like a complete douche... Must all linux nerds total elitist pricks
- bratterscain, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2RIP "pwn" "own" "leet", I can only hope. Yes, I've been guilty but they're still lame.
- quomen, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2His problem does sound like B.S...o.D.
- markwilcox, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2You're doing it wrong
- jamdogg, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3How to set up Ubuntu: Insert CD, wait for prompts, allow installation to complete. Done.
- cmdrNacho, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2come on man thats f'n easy .. you gotta come up with something better than that
- ironcitypete, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Everyone here calling all Linux users 'elitist pricks' should actually read some of the other post on Ubuntu's forums. 99% of the people on that forum are extremely helpful and friendly and would be glad to help you out with any problem you might have. There will always be ***** no matter what OS you use Windows, Mac, or Linux so why single out Linux users as the 'elitist pricks'.
- maninalift, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Not so keen on "win" but I do like "fail" and I think both are best without the "epic" prefix.
- sirhomer, on 05/15/2008, -2/+4I never purchased an Apple product or felt I had to purchase an Apple product for any reason. May I ask who is forcing you to use iPods or iMacs?
- YamiJim, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2.....im just wondering his steps on getting to that forum for that question....
- Aynatix, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2idgi?
- dreamsofubuntu, on 05/15/2008, -2/+4well i thought it was funny :P
- sup3rc0w, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3Hardly funny
