EeePC with Every Hack Possible (GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11N,...)
clumpc.com — We ’ve seen a lot of EeePC hacks, but this one takes the cake (currently). Featuring GPS (with antenna), Bluetooth, internal card reader, additional internal flash drive, 802.11N, FM transmitter and modem. Here is a run down of all the components and their costs...

- frontporsche, on 01/20/2008, -2/+15Very nice -- a work of art.
I would perhaps suggest using twisted pairs of the various runs of USB data lines. - minigamer1896, on 01/20/2008, -7/+26Y'know, if you were to pay for all of those in an OEM laptop, it'd be FAR more than $854.38.
- goofygarber, on 01/20/2008, -12/+2The blog just made those numbers up. For example, that SD card costs like $30. He probably added $200 worth of stuff there, not $500 or whatever the guy guessed.
- kentifer, on 01/20/2008, -1/+12According to the guy's wiki, the prices are accurate.
He lists the prices he paid for them at the bottom.
(The guy who actually made the modifications). - 80hd, on 01/20/2008, -1/+11still though..
$90 for 4gb of flash memory? that seems steep- chingy1788, on 01/20/2008, -5/+2sometimes you want quality
you know those $15 4GB USB Drives from ebay?
they transfer at less than 500kB/s, which is quite pedestrian
and they probably don't work well after a few days of use - fradro, on 01/20/2008, -2/+3$30 for a 4gb sandisk cruizer

- Dantetheinferno, on 01/20/2008, -0/+14I dunno, you'd probably have a larger screen, more ram, and a more powerful proccesser though. ;)
- dubloe7, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2he has an added 2 gigs of ram, most sub $100 laptops don't.

- teabagginz, on 01/20/2008, -0/+51all you need is a battery hack to take care of all that stuff
- Lane, on 01/20/2008, -0/+32I'm begging to know what kind of a GPS that is and how complicated it is to hide internally. Id love to be able to stick one of those bad boys into my tablet for only $36.70
- tweak33, on 01/20/2008, -2/+4Go onto eBay and look for a DIY gps kit. theyre relatively cheap.waiting on mine to arrive now...with an EEE aswell woo!

- obxjdt, on 01/20/2008, -19/+14Why not just buy a $850 laptop and be done with it?

- diggrim, on 01/20/2008, -5/+6I still prefer the Nokia N800/810
- frontporsche, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1I love the n810 too, but though the 810 and the eee are pretty similar, they have different markets I think.
The big difference is that with the Eee you can comfortably work on your blog while on the go. Doing a lot of typing on the n810 means you have to bring a real keyboard around with you. ...and now that you have a keyboard between you and the n810, you're squinting at the 4.3 inch screen.
On the n810's side, the huge difference is that it's a shirt-pocket device.
Otherwise they stack up about the same. the n810 has bluetooth and gps and longer battery life and touch screen. the Eee has more memory and a faster CPU and ethernet and video out and provides more power to USB devices.- Viroz, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1I heard the eee pc's keyboard is pretty hard to type on too...
- frontporsche, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1I tried one at the store for about 10 minutes. My impression was that it was the smallest possible keyboard that still allowed me to touch type. It was a little awkward, but I felt like I would get used to it after a couple days of practice.
Actually, I'm growing to like the n810 keyboard too. It's not bad ... for a thumb board ... for the occasional IM or url entry.

- fradro, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3That is pretty thoughtful, using the USB Hub and just stripping down components to their main boards.
In my opinion, wires and the extra components are laid out pretty well. - fradro, on 01/20/2008, -9/+1It runs on winXP, why is this categorized under unix/linux?
- drunkard, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Because it also runs on unix/linux.
- chingy1788, on 01/20/2008, -1/+6not only that, it comes with linux, not XP
- se1zure, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5it should be under hardware, but the submitter put it to linux/unix because every linix geek gets a hardon over the eeepc.
- prophetpimp, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1i am a Windows guy and even i have a Hardon for eeePC

- lovestospooge, on 01/20/2008, -2/+7Dugg for proper use of "hack":
"A Hack is usually a technique used to subvert, misuse or subtly change a program, gadget or mechanism in such a way as to change, or add to, its functionality.
Hack has several meanings in the technology and computer science fields: a clever or quick fix to a computer program problem; a clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem; or a modification of a program or device to give the user access to features that were otherwise unavailable to them."

- UNDERSTAR, on 01/20/2008, -1/+4I just want to know if theyre is any website that actually sell modded EEE's???
- sny1120, on 01/20/2008, -3/+6Yes...these are modifications, not hacks.

- BedPost, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1You're all idiots.
- supermanred, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2I would take a Macbook Air over 5 of these hacked / modded eee PCs.
- Dunnix, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Thats because you are a fool. Thats like comparing a F-16 to the paper airplane you made while attending an apple fanboy camp.

or at least another eeepc - newprohibition, on 01/20/2008, -1/+5From bottom of the Wiki: Cost
* USB hubs - 11.20 USD
* GPS module - 36.70 USD

* Adata SDHC 8 GB - 74.50 USD

Total 454.38 USD - including shipping to Europe. If you say I could get a much better, powerful, plain old, regular laptop for the same money, I say: What's the fun in that?- supermanred, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2True. You can buy a low-end laptop for that price or for a few hundred bucks more and it wont look like something that should be wired to dynamite.
- Dunnix, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1The pictures are of it with the case off. The case can be put on for regular use... Its just showing the mods. Needless to say, you could rig one of those things to detonate dynamite.

- chokeaduck, on 01/20/2008, -2/+2Buried as he doesn't have the touchscreen, which to be honest, was one of the cooler mods that I've seen. And clearly, people don't have a clue what the difference between hacking and modding is.

- vancanucksfan, on 01/20/2008, -2/+2wouldn't this be illegal though if this was done in the u.s? i mean, the computer is fcc approved, but if you start jamming things in there, especially with long wires, it could transmit a whole bunch of unwanted signals and that could get you in trouble with the fcc. For example, if someone did a hardware mod and the computer started sending out a frequency that is used by airplanes to send an emergency signal, you would get in alot of trouble.
- justaboutdead, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1not really, all of the things added that transmit stuff are fcc approved also.
- vancanucksfan, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1yea that's true, but there might be a component inside that transmits a certain frequency lightly, but once you add a wire to it, it acts like an antenna and that makes it transmit much more further.
- omgsideburns, on 01/20/2008, -0/+0yeah but when was the last time they checked your laptop for fcc compliance?
- vancanucksfan, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1yea that's true, but there might be a component inside that transmits a certain frequency lightly, but once you add a wire to it, it acts like an antenna and that makes it transmit much more further.

- EricSancho, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1Is it functional?
- supermanred, on 01/23/2008, -0/+1I hope so, cuz it looks like *****.
- hansolo007, on 01/20/2008, -1/+0Does it come in a smaller size?
- oldexplorer, on 01/20/2008, -2/+1The Eee is fun, hackable, and VERY upgradeable. The future is Eee - a laptop for ordinary people. It is really OLPC for the Western world - affordable and functional. The rich will always have a Mac I guess, but truck drivers and Walmart greeters will have an Eee - and the Eee will do everything they want.
- Evildudetx, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2I know several truck drivers - all of them have gaming rigs. None of them would touch this POS - its to small and there is no way you could game on it.
- Evildudetx, on 01/20/2008, -3/+2Why bother? I'd much rather buy a laptop that already has these components factory installed and is under a warrenty.
- Dunnix, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1I am afraid there is no such thing.
- RexxxMaster, on 01/20/2008, -1/+1I go away on a trip no digg for a few weeks... i find this sweet!

I've seen Kingston 2GB 677 ddr so-dimm for £27.99 with free delivery which is about $55 - supermanred, on 01/23/2008, -0/+2What a fugly computer.
Why would anyone want to carry around that monstrosity?
You definitely won't be able to take it onto a plane or across the border in to the US, the border nazis would probably blow it up or something.- Dunnix, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1All computers look like that without the _case_ off. Unless you have a mac, I've heard theres cake under there.

http://www.generics.ws/ - prosy1986, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0Nowadays linux drivers are available for almost all hardwares. Only thing required is courage from users to install linux and start using it in every day business or entertainment activities. Initially it look slightly odd on the eyes, since we got used to windows for more than a decade, it will be alright before switching to Vista.
