- RubberBinder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Wow! needful is actually a word.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=needful - PinkoComrade, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21I congratulate you on your research beforehand it doesn't happen often here
- jshadow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21To all the people bashing Ubuntu being in the article title, the article is specifically about installing the app in ... Ubuntu Feisty. It might be a good idea to at least click the link first.
- mastercheif, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26Chances this makes it to the front page without "Ubuntu Feisty" in the title, zero.
- usrlocalbin, on 10/10/2007, -18/+33It is actually available for any Linux distribution. Not just Ubuntu.
Check www.sourceforge.net. Most of the software there is source.....betting most Ubuntu fan boys wouldn't know what to do with it. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+18I am Ubuntu fanboy.
./configure
make
make install - shakin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14That's why most people just install the build-essential package. And it actually does make sense to not install gcc or dev headers on any system that is supposed to be secure.
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Hardly, on ubuntu it goes more like this.
./configure
no gcc compiler? what the hell is this.
sudo apt-get install gcc
./configure
headers? I just ***** installed gcc.
looking around
oh they split them from gcc what an awesome idea
sudo apt-get install libc6-dev
./configure
what the hell, I have gtk installed
oh right the headers thing again, thumbs up to you ubuntu
sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev
10 more -dev that should be unnecessary if it weren't for one of the stupidest policies ever of splitting headers
make
wtf no make either, does ubuntu install anything
sudo apt-get install automake
make
sudo make install - PinkoComrade, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8get wubi, it won't ruin your windows installation http://wubi-installer.org/
- ronk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Adobe makes great products like photoshop but their Acrobat Reader/Professional is bloatware/slow. Always great to see solutions to replace the Acrobat suite.
- Rewdog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Very cool.
And sure you can install it on most any linux distro, but its not an inaccurate title / description because the tutorial actually is done with Ubuntu; just check the screen shots. - crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7to be fair he did spell it wrong.
- YourDoom123, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8for gentoo users, the ebuild is available from the sunrise repository (layman -a sunrise).
- ryodoan, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Nope, I wouldn't.
But isnt that kinda the point of ubuntu? To make linux accessible to the masses?
Oh nevermind, I am wasting my time, go back to compiling your kernals in your mothers basement while I get ready for work. - MrTea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5For Arch linux
pacman -S pdfedit - nobeastsofierce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No, I'm with eean on this one. If the title didn't specify Ubuntu, you would have more cause to complain. But its an Ubuntu orientated article, with an Ubuntu orientated title. I see no problem.
- dreea, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7this is really needfull! cool.
- eean, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7RTFA
- bhalo05, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Some have been saying it for ages... a standard was needed in the Linux world. Since users never cared to ask for one to which all the major distributors agreed on, Ubuntu is raising as the de facto standard. And IMHO, while far from an optimal solution, it's better to have a de facto standard than no standard at all.
- terog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah, and "Open a browser (e.g. Firefox) and go to http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=PDF+Editor.".
As if you didn't have your browser open already since you're reading it.... - specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Get .debs here:
http://www.getdeb.net/app.php?name=PDF+Editor - mezoko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What about the FA?
Sure some of it is ubuntu specific, but those who don't use ubuntu can easily figure out how to get it - eean, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I'd assume Acrobat can.
- nic777, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just tried it now and its going to be great to fill out forms which people send to me without printing them.
Previously, in an emergency situation, I used pdf2oo http://pdf2oo.sourceforge.net/ but PDFedit makes it much easier. - majinboy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Such a feature is not just restricted to Ubuntu you know... It's been in OpenSuse for ages and iirc Fedora has it. Double click on the *.rpm file and Yast/YUM installs it and fetches any dependency.
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Needful certainly. Now I wish I hadn't installed every other distro besides ubuntu because apparently I can't use pdfedit on those. Damn me and my foolishness.
Very thorough too, you hardly ever see a windows tutorial which explains how to click on a link and open an exe but click on a link and open a deb, that ***** is important. Thumbs up to you tutorial writer. - gavintlgold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Taxes?
- davewho, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Reader can fill in PDF forms. Acrobat can also edit text and insert text.
- earlycj5, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Seems somewhat inaccurate to me, it's how to install it in Ubuntu.
The second page applies to any distro, the software works the same.
Not gonna complain though, just one more reason to use Linux whether or not you use my distro or not. Which currently is not Ubuntu. - Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I think he meant Tasty Cakes but forgot the apostrophe (ta'kes)
- sonojacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2IMHO, PDFedit is an outstanding project but is far from being ready for production environments. I have tried to implement it twice by now at different stages of its fast development, and can definitely say I am impressed; though, results are still casuistic, an maybe depend on the way you "compile/prepare" it (need more research here)
Though, I am looking forward to catch its forthcoming stable versions... this will be the TOTAL Acrobat killer (yes, I do think Acrobat's emporium has to be beaten for the sake of real document interaction, flow of standards and free will of content creators). - wampl3r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3OpenSUSE users can find the rpm in either Packman or KDE Community repos.. The second page seems to be distro independent...
- bruenig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The ubuntu part can be summed up in "click on the link and then press ok" anyways.
- shawnanigans, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8Admit it. Command line installations suck. It makes it much more difficult for new people to learn how to learn an OS. In windows you click and .EXE and you begin an install. Ubuntu tries to get this functionality and because it makes life simple and doesnt require tech savvy therefore making a Linux OS available to the masses you mock it. Sir, go ***** yourself.
- ploke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1skim for mac
http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/ - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1With Reader, can you save? The last time I tried it, a few years ago, saving was denied. I know Acrobat can, but you have to pay for it and that's not cheap just to do save!
- DXBLouie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sweet!
i've been looking for a way to edit a bunch of PDF files and make them open in full screen by default ( i wanna embed them in a web page without showing the acrobat toolbar in the page and i figured the only way to do it is to have the PDF open in full screen )
any ideas? :) - jetpeach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+126 million already? i thought ubuntu still was now around 12 million users (from a few months ago, http://techiqmag.com/2007/07/22/ubuntu-linux-6-million-to-12-million-users/), but i guess it is growing so fast its hard for me to keep up...
- HonestAbe, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1That's the whole point.
- xGrill, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1maybe they will port this to MacOSX
- usrlocalbin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well that would work if Ubuntu installed make, or gcc by default......
- oopsminded, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.coolpdf.com/tweakpdf.html
Hope it helps. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Edit PDF Files For Free With PDFedit -OpenSource PDF Editor (Arch Linux)
1. sudo pacman -S pdfedit
2. start pdfedit
ubuntu fanboys claim ubuntu is the easiest, but all the how-to's are overly complicated with useless screenshots. - dang4rtman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Is available for windows from sourceforge, if you have cygwin installed on your pc.
- tmsbrdrs, on 01/06/2009, -0/+0funny thing about those how-to's. They tend to be focused more for the people who are scared of synaptic. Just did a search for it, checked the box, clicked the button that says install and waited. The hardest part about the whole thing was finding whether it was an office program or an image program. The whole thing was done in less than a minute and I never opened the terminal. Sure, the terminal is faster. Believe me I know by now that the terminal is faster. But if I can do things without going to the terminal, just using the GUI, that means that everyone else can too. That means that people who have no clue about computers can do the same thing. That's the ease of use Ubuntu "fanboys" are talking about. We only rease these for fun and most of us wonder why everything's written in terminal talk with all the useless screenshots too. Here's a general installation tutorial for you. This works for the majority of things you would need to download and install in ubuntu.
1. Put your hand on the mouse
2. move the pointer to System
3. scroll over to Administration
4. Open Synaptic Package Manager
5. put in your password
6. search for what you want to install
7. check the box and click the green check mark button
8. let it install
No screenshots, no terminal talk. Sure it's slower, but it's more user friendly for the less technologically inclined. Plus, it's a great way to convert Windows users when they find out how easy it is. Just wish the tutorials would show that. - TDot1980, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Great, so the 26 people that use Ubuntu can edit PDFs.
- tmsbrdrs, on 01/06/2009, -0/+0Foxit Reader works best for Windows. It's also a lighter PDF Reader than Adobe and will allow you to fill out forms and make changes within those forms which you can save. The only little annoyance is the watermark left on the PDF document when using the free version and all PDF documents are viewed in the seperate application. Of course, the seperate application starts in 1/10 the time without a splash screen.
