A free software support contract for example carries the same value as a non free software support contract. A developer working on a free software project produces equal if not greater value than a developer working on non free software project. The difference is where the money goes. In the case of free software, all the funding can and mostly does go into the local economy, fueling growth and more development and advance. That is an important benefit i think.
