- matt.rubin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+59Epson makes PCs? I have never seen a computer made by epson.
- latova, on 10/11/2007, -3/+57The future of technology looks bright. Freedom from blue screens, DRM and WGA.
- nucleocide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+52HOLY *****!
EPSON SELLS PCS? - martalli, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28Honestly, Windows has become much more stable since the hoary days of Windows 98 and the early incarnations of win2k and win xp. However, the advantages of security, package management, and freedom from DRM/WGA are real and clear to me. We use linux on several desktops in our office.
- gavintlgold, on 10/11/2007, -0/+26Wow, so maybe there'll be a day where a consumer can walk into a store and ask for a linux pc. Linux is getting more mainstream! :)
- shrewduser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25man i've got all this pent up consumerism from all the money i've saved on linux and open source... just bring some of this over to Australia (or europe etc, most countries have a higher per capita of linux usage than the U.S)
- homerhomer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21It's nice that they are doing this, but they should look into there hardware compatibilities first. At a glance I noticed that the laptop offered has an ATI card, Yuk!. Hopefully that this will put some weight for ATI to fix there crappy drivers.
- latova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20The blue screens were more of a joke. But with the increase of stability Microsoft just introduced new problems: UAC, DRM, WGA, slow ass, More vendor lockin, etc.
They need to start developing their operating systems for the users instead of the MPAA/RIAA and shareholders. - Musaffa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14It's great that more companies are jumping on the Linux bandwagon. But the real questions is: Epson is making PC's?
- Freps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15You mean you haven't heard of the new Epson HX-20 Portable Computer??
http://tinyurl.com/34w7fd - benanzo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Yes Linux usage by joe-consumer is higher in other countries per capita than in the US, but unfortunately the US consumer market is much larger than elsewhere, making them almost always the first choice.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10When the first reports came of what models would be offered on the laptop at least there was only an option for ATI, but on the actual Ubuntu version they had intel integrated by default and Nvidia as an option.
- smiley2billion, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I was seriously considering getting a Macbook this fall but with all this I might decide to support the preinstalled Linux movement.
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11We are living in historical times :)
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Well this is good news. Considering the last time they tried to sell Linux it was not a hit with the consumers, so it was dropped. To see it now back in the mainstream is a blessing. Hopefully next year when I am ready to purchase a new computer I will be asked which OS I want, Linux or Windows.
Yippy! Linux is here to stay folks!
*weebit does the happy dance* - Snakedal337, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Man I just bought a Linux dell, now I have to buy a HP and an epson too!?
;-)
Hopefully the market is still there, and not everyone that wanted a linux PC got one. - rokinroj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I used to do tech support for Epson ages ago. The last computer that I remeber them making came with the CPM operating system on it.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yeah. Scanners and printers are all I see made by them.
*pats his beloved 836XL scanner* - ggoyal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Epson does make PCs and they are the first one to offer a MiniPC (same form factor as a Mac Mini) These Japanese firms do try to be different.
http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/21/epson-goes-miniature-with-endeavor-st100-micro-pc/ - Amablue, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Chocobutu?
EsspresSUSE? - sqrt7744, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I dugg this story because I though it was true... but after searching their webpage I find no mention whatsoever of linux anything. Neither on the American nor the German page. Them talking about offering some linux computers in the future is not the same as them offering them now. Have I missed a link somewhere? Please point me in the right direction if I'm mistaken.
EDIT: i saw a comment somewhere about them offering them in Asia. Ok - might be true. - LuTze, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3From what I can make out these are available only in Japan (which might explain why most people can't find any references to PCs on the Epson website). Also, turns out they have been doing this since last year.

- brutalentropy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why does digg only let you respond to the last comment in a comment tree?
God this new system sucks. - Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Lest you forget, Walmart used to sell cheap Linspire (or Lindows or whatever) PCs.
- bradleyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Buying a Macbook will not prevent you from running Linux, but buying a PC will prevent you from running OS X. I use Windows, OS X, and Ubuntu. Ubuntu has it's up sides, but since OS X has a bash shell and X11, I rarely find something I need to do at the shell that I have to have Linux for.
Compiz Fusion looks incredible though. Having used Exposé for some time now, I reall think that this could be the big driving force to push me in to using Ubuntu more. We'll see how spaces turns out. - armand_wall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks for the walk on memory lane.
- rivostevo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one who thinks that PC looks ugly?
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Forgot to mention: that site says it support Firefox 1.5. You'd have to edit the install.rdf file inside the JAR file to include 2.0.* support, very easy, but then it might not work because of theme changes from FF1->FF2. Perhaps if you pester the author..
- generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I thought Espon actually supports Linux printing..
HP and Epson are generally good ones to buy from, in terms of Linux. - generalloy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Polygone:
The "JAR" file you're referencing is really just a compressed file. You can open it up with File Roller or WinRAR or whatever. Then navigate through the directories to find the images to contain the buttons, and you can edit it with GIMP.
If you want to actually use that theme, you drag the .JAR file into a Firefox window and it asks you to install it.
(JARs are an alternative to XPIs)
Sorry for not replying right to you, but the comments system won't let me... - NJank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2looks like the business case has been made to jump back in the arena. lacking the Windows Tax, and getting in before a lot of the other players may make the picture a bit more rosy for the Epson execs.
- bovester, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Error connecting to database. Please contact Administrator."
No one caught it before this ***** site went down. I want to punch their admin in the face. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1 Sure! Go for it...Ive used Linux (Freespire) since it came out...
I really like Linux...Just tried Mint Linux last night..Really sweet. - ggoyal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You can also try Aopen MiniPC if it suits you:
http://minipc.aopen.com/Global/spec.htm - More options and better configuration - aB0z, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How is that not a duplicate? Slashgear's source is the same DDoS'd page that we're linked to here!
- Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1For some reason, it's only in 'Expanded' mode that you can only create new threads. Just another bug to be worked out.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Me too! I think ours was a 286 or 386. I'm not really sure since we got it in ~1984/5 when I was 5 or 6. I do know it had a 16MB HD and, like yours, dual 5 1/4 floppies. I still have the discs with space invaders and other games on them.
BTW, mirror anyone? - matt.rubin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1its like the home key. It probably doesn't do anything. Heh I am not pressing it its across the keyboard.
- Optimaximal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Don't other computers come with dedicated 'Help' keys? I've never seen F1 do anything else...
- Trace, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How about Hot Wheels and Barbie PC's
http://news.com.com/Barbie,+Hot+Wheels+PC+delivery+lags+in+holiday+crunch/2100-1017_3-234533.html - BHSPitMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What the -HELL-? I still have to use XP in VirtualBox just to use my printer!
- motang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sweet, sounds pretty cool.
- evildeadman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Probably not the best place to ask such an off-topic question.
Answer: It depends...I think. make can be used for compiling Java code, but only using the GNU Java interpreter (I forget what it's called). If you want to make an executable JAR file, you're better off just using Sun's JDK for Linux. - BHSPitMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1HP, correct. Epson, WRONG!
- twtmc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Hopefully more developers will start making programs that run natively on linux. Lets face it, cedega, wine, and crossovers all suck. The programs run very poorly compared to something that runs natively on linux.
- SignorDildo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Savour this moment - it's one of those few instances in history where you'll be lucky enough to live in a time when the underdog really sticks it to the man.
- Spikeli27, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1not my pc... i custom built mine and its beautiful
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i would like this micro-pc with my PC compatible LCD HDTV in my bedroom...
