- rootnik, on 07/26/2008, -26/+83Bury me, but this is linux spam at its finest. If somebody really uses the terminal for things like downloading torrents, they sure as hell don't need an article on digg to tell them how to do it.
- depro9, on 07/26/2008, -3/+41sudo apt-get lost season 3
- 0ldmankdude, on 07/26/2008, -1/+29rtorrent is an excellent program! glad to see it get some support
- Louis11, on 07/26/2008, -0/+23There ARE reply buttons on the Digg.
- 0ldmankdude, on 07/26/2008, -1/+24because you can't use utorrent natively on linux, let alone in a terminal... this is a great solution for downloading over ssh or something similar
- Churnd, on 07/26/2008, -0/+21Gotta learn somewhere. Tutorials like this will at least get people to try, and that's a good thing.
- podgey22, on 07/26/2008, -0/+20If fairness I've been looking for a torrent client that doesn't get unloaded when when X crashes
- marike, on 07/26/2008, -2/+15Why is this linux spam? This is useful to me for when I'm on my Mac. I use Transmission and I didn't even know that they offered a command-line version. Even of you are on Windows, you don't need a GUI to for everything.
- greenm1981, on 07/26/2008, -5/+17Don't digg down a question.
- DomZy, on 07/26/2008, -0/+12If your using rtorrent, you hould look into setting up a web interface for it. I'm using wtorrent:
http://www.wtorrent-project.org/trac/ - inactive, on 07/26/2008, -0/+10Couldn't you have picked a better movie
- Klowner, on 07/26/2008, -0/+8BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE HAVE HEADLESS SERVERS IN THE BACK ROOM BY THEIR WASHING MACHINE? Just a guess, and stop shouting
- DyceFreak, on 07/26/2008, -3/+11Some ppl get extra kicks about text... makes them feel oldschool and somehow more powerful...
same thing with a terminal based IM... - proh4m, on 07/26/2008, -0/+7Why do you hate non-Windows OSes so much as to come in and troll this article? I'm not sure if you're just being a dick, or if you are so stupid as to think that Linux users are actually required to use a command-line interface to download torrents.
I don't get it. Even if you think Linux is too complicated, and Macs are too expensive, why hate them? Why can't people like you just enjoy your Windows OS and stay out of threads on Linux/OS X? Christ, I mean Linux is FREE and you don't have to use it.
This is in response to all of your comments in here and other people that do the same thing, not just this last comment. They don't have enough merit to respond to individually, but I'm tired of seeing this crap whenever I read a Linux / OS X / PS3 / Xbox 360 / Wii etc. story. If you don't like it just stay out. - ZeroDivide, on 07/26/2008, -0/+6I would recommend using rtorrent with screen. I've been downloading torrents like that for a long time and it works out great.
- sexybobo, on 07/26/2008, -2/+7Why not just use Torrent Flux b4rt?
Set it up on a pc and connect to it though your web browser (nice for downloading stuff while at work with out getting fired for using bittorent) - tiuk, on 07/26/2008, -0/+5This is true. This is something I'm interested in doing, but didn't really know where to start. Articles like this give people like me the push that they need.
- cgbspender, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4It works fine with wine, though.
- thundercock, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4Or you can use Azureus with the console ui plugin to run it headless.
- xptweakerntn, on 07/27/2008, -1/+5Actually, it is this:
sudo apt-get download lost-season-3
It comes with 3 dependencies: lost-season-1 lost-season-2 commercials
To bad we have to wait until Intrepid Ibex to get this feature :( - Klowner, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4@proh4m: I suspect it's a feeling of insecurity, fanboys get more aggressive as they get more and more unsure of the side they've picked. If they feel they've ivested too much time or money to switch to the other side of the fence, so they insult everyone else in an attempt to compensate.
- pyrates, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4So if X crashes for you, get a dump of the crash and submit it to get fixed. Don't work around the issue, confront it.
- pyrates, on 07/27/2008, -1/+4So if X crashes for you, get a dump of the crash and submit it to get fixed. Don't work around the issue, confront it.
- nunofgs, on 07/26/2008, -3/+6What are you talking about? X doesn't crash!
- skyshock1, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3I use Aria2c. It's basically an all-purpose CLI download manager, but can handle torrent downloads with the -T option. DL'ing torrents is nice over CLI because you can do it inside say a screen session (google screen, it rules), detach from the screen session, and everything you were doing at the CLI is still running in the background, but no longer visible until you re-attach.
Anyway, check out Aria2c you might like it. - 0ldmankdude, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4that's also a good option, but is more resource-intensive (running an httpd, php, mysql, etc.) than just one program and requires a bit of setup. it does have a very nice interface though.
- pizzatsf, on 07/26/2008, -2/+5If you're using TransmissionBT, you should look into setting up a web interface for it. I'm using Clutch:
http://clutchbt.com/ - robdiggity, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3Actually, Bram's original bittorrent-curses client does the job on the command-line just fine too. Article doesn't even mention it.
Nor do they mention that screen is a wonderful utility to have handy for this purpose. - izikdela, on 07/26/2008, -1/+4@-Chi.0
sudo apt-get -a less_clichéd_insult
01100100 01101111 01110101 01100011 01101000 01100101 01100010 01100001 01100111 00100001 - depro9, on 07/27/2008, -1/+4sudo apt-get go ***** yourself
- om3ganet, on 07/26/2008, -0/+3It means I can start a torrent download when i'm not at home, on my server at home which is a box in a cabinet on the wall. It has no GUI but it's on all the time! Plus with a web interface its basically GUI anyway.
- Giga, on 07/27/2008, -1/+3"give me an example of some more "power" you would gain from running a torrent in console instead..."
Being able to SSH into the machine and manage the torrents from a cell phone. - Takuro, on 07/26/2008, -2/+4Does this offer any major benefits or extra flexibility as opposed to managing torrents from a GUI? I mean, it sounds cool and 1337, but it's also nice to have a progress bar to visually convey the download progress.
- mohtasham, on 07/27/2008, -0/+280s? Suppose you're not home and you want to download a movie real quick from your home. What would you do? You can ssh on your computer and download that movie easily.
You can also do scheduling for your downloads.
No need to run a memory consuming program like azureus, if you want to have 15 other applications up and running, especially if your computer doesn't have a big ram.
Should I continue? - dcherryholmes, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2When you combine rtorrent with screen it means you can log in and manage your torrent downloads from any terminal, even your smart phone. If I'm sitting in the bar and somebody mentions a cool show, I can grab the torrent, sftp it to the directory that rtorrent automatically watches, and have it ready to go when I get home.
- mohtasham, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2azureus works on Linux, too.
- Giga, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2"It works fine with wine, though."
Not over the command line via SSH. - DyceFreak, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2@Klowner
Any examples?
@MrTea
how often does your GUI crash? And what would be the point if you are affraid to use it?
The point of the GUI is to provide more control and speed of control than before... give me an example of some more "power" you would gain from running a torrent in console instead... - iXneonXi, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2Torrentflux-b4rt is nice. It uses command line tools but provides a nice web based gui.
- Shmock, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Torrentflux is easy to set up.
But otherwise *****.
I've had it on a OVH dedicated server, it had a poor GUI, torrents died for no reason and resource management is a complete joke.
I'm now on r/wTorrent and it's running great. - neFariou5, on 07/26/2008, -0/+2I use rtorrent and love it, but I agree that this is pretty a stupid article. It takes all of a second to search for "linux command line torrent client"
- captbaritone, on 07/26/2008, -0/+1I was using Torrentflux but it uses bittornado as a back end which means that each torrent you have running is a seperate instance of bittornado running. Slowed my computer to a halt running about 30 torrents at a time.
- boobsbr, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1screen + rtorrent = epic win
- schulz89, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1rtorrent within screen accessing from ssh... my old p100 without monitor can do torrents too!
- antdude, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1BitTorrent comes with Python scripts too.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Now try and think of a USEFUL example...
- iXneonXi, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1Custom themes fixes the GUI. Torrents dying is your server, because that's only happened to me twice which I could easily blame on my connection.
- iXneonXi, on 07/29/2008, -0/+1You can choose whether or not to use bittornado. I stuck with it because I run at most 4 torrents (the max my tracker allows for my connection).
- yergi, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1...and that son, is why you will be working at Mcdonald's for the rest of your adult life.
