- czarr, on 07/08/2008, -0/+5@dajernts, as the article points out: have you ever seen an "inexperienced computer user" try to install windows? If they make it to the desktop they still have to figure out where to download device drivers for everything and how to install those. A preconfigured Ubuntu system is much easier for a new computer user to operate. Heck, my moms laptop runs Archlinux just fine (since i have preconfigured it for her) and she doesn't know a command line from a hole in the ground. Linux actually works 100x better for her than windows ever did because we couldn't stop the damn thing from bogging down after a month. (inexperienced computer users like to click on blinking buttons)
- dajernts, on 07/08/2008, -1/+4Wow, after bashing writers for not producing significant evidence to their claims against Linux he never once puts up a strong case himself. Then he starts nitpicking about little problems in Windows that don't for one second compare to the amount of problems that come up when using Linux. Whether you like it or not. Linux is, at this time, for professionals only.
- dajernts, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I'm sure there are a good many exceptions. I've seen inexperienced computer users do all right with pre-configured systems but, in my experience, between only ubuntu and fedora, getting it all working on a new or old system is extremely difficult.
- inactive, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Not really. My grandmother uses the ubuntu distro. When I bought here a new laptop with Vista she asked me to put ubuntu on it. To be fair, I did modify ubuntu to her liking which someone with at least a little experience would have to do.
- Nitrolinken, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1It's the setup that takes time.
No, not the installation wizard. The post-setup of drivers, appearance, applications and tweaks.
After that, it's a smooth run. - jimminy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Well, could you produce significant evidence that Linux is for professionals only? Let's narrow it down to usual desktop usage.
- wpyh, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Great article except for "GNU"/Linux.
- jimminy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Are you talking about Windows?
- babdragon, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0It isn't about whether or not you are professional: its about whether you want to use your computer as an easy to use system or as a powerhouse for specialized calculations. I love using linux because it allows me to write programs that save me time, and i don't find it particularly hard, but i use windows for the proprietary software (such as photoshop) that I really like. If I set ubuntu up carefully, even the most casual user could handle it fine...
- babdragon, on 07/09/2008, -1/+0And here I thought I was going to be reading a well thought out article about why linux really is different than mac and windows, and shouldn't be in the same comparison range. For instance, the fact that macs and pc's emphasize the "just-work" components whereas linux is more about the user being able to get the most control out of their computer; for gods sakes, who cares whether more people use mac, pc, or linux? people are happy with the OS that suits them, and linux is not going to go away just because of a small marketshare. Buried for the bad title and for belligerence.
