- llib1234, on 10/11/2007, -25/+236Ubuntu should claim trademark on that design but then demand an cross licensing deal.
- Branden, on 10/11/2007, -5/+189Why is everyone automatically pointing at Microsoft?
Look at the bottom: "Microsoft Alumni Network is not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation." - schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -34/+141It's quite a popular and generic symbol. It doesn't belong to Ubuntu. YMMV.
- cuoops, on 10/11/2007, -2/+99https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-es/attachments/20051202/4abe3cb1/ubuntu_5.11.jpg
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -3/+50Because few people actually read facts before hating on Microsoft. You could submit a dead link with the title "a new flaw in [Microsoft product]" and still get a good few hundred replies of Microsoft hate.
- Branden, on 10/11/2007, -6/+49"Microsoft Alumni Network is not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation."
- Mk3890, on 10/11/2007, -17/+55Who cares?
- kamog, on 10/11/2007, -14/+49I really can't think of anything more perfect for a Microsoft product than a logo depicting a circle-jerk.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+34Finally, someone who actually LOOKS at the content that they're criticizing. I'm astonished.
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29It's reduce, reuse, recycle. The order is actually important (recycling is supposed to be a last resort after being unable to reduce or reuse), fyi. ;)
- Wrathernaut, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29BAM! archive.org refutes prior art:

2005 and not a damn thing like it is now.
Not until August 2006 does it appear to be the current logo. - theMurdocVolta, on 10/11/2007, -26/+51I cannot lie, the MSA one looks way better.
- defectDS, on 10/11/2007, -11/+35Btu the colors and the position are similar. too similar... >_>
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27The code is open source. The logo and other stylistic elements are trademarked, much like Firefox.
- Goldspink, on 10/11/2007, -15/+38Ex-MS employees seem to have only one arm.
- Wrathernaut, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Correction, August 2005, well after Ubuntu.
- tapo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22They can't demand a cross licensing deal, the Microsoft Alumni Network is a non-profit philanthropic organization, with no legal ties to Microsoft, Inc. Check the about page.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+24I think Ubuntu is really a secret MS Linux project. After all, Ubuntu is the most popular, easiest distro of Linux. Then after you get most of the Linux users on board, you pull back the curtain and there is Steve Balmer, smiling, holding the new MS Ubuntu EULA in his left hand and a bill for $200 in his right.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -10/+25"Look at the bottom: 'Microsoft Alumni Network is not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation.''
Indeed. Buried as inaccurate. - MalDON, on 10/11/2007, -13/+28How much you bet the site's designer has never seen ubuntu before?
- Darcy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16Why are Microsoft being accused of copying a logo they didn't even create? The MSA are closely aligned with Microsoft, but they work completely independently of them. And I should also point out that the Microsoft Alumni Network was started in 1995, though I don't no if they used the same logo.
- hfranco, on 10/11/2007, -16/+29recycle reuse reduce
- parax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12That was a strange use of "YMMV".
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Not to mention it's copyright and trademarked by Canonical.
- ruiacp, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19Software and brands are different things! And yes, they can and they should complain, it's their image being stolen...
- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Why did you bury this as inaccurate? The title and description say Microsoft Alumni Network, and never just say Microsoft. They reference the name of the website. The submitter never once said it was Microsoft's doing, it was all in the comments section. Don't punish the submitter.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16I like the MS Alumni version better, I think Ubuntu should steal it for the next version.
- OrangeTide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10The Linux trademark is pretty vigorously defended by Linux International. So it seems they CAN complain about trademarks even if their licensing is free. You realize that even charity organizations own and protect trademarks? And Open Source is hardly charity by any stretch of the imagination (it's hippie free software with strings attached)
- dinostabOMG, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12So... can you find some other uses of it then? Not being obnoxious, I'd just like to see.
- Amorrn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13http://teachanimalobjectivity.homestead.com/files/tao1a.gif
Looks like those Taoist guys stole it from Apple, too. Not like it is some kind of ancient symbol or anything. - BamB00, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I want to be in the inner circle
- glensvodka, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13The submitter didn't say the two were affiliated.
You = buried as inaccurate. - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17Yeah, this is more than coincidence... side by side comparison shows it's exactly the same angel possitioning, very similar color fading, even similar size (on both website's front page)...
- ECas123, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10The egg!
- xnyhps, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yeah, I use it like every day... to symbolize stuff or something...
- EmxBA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Very...attractive.
- darwin81, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8What are you talking about? There's a difference between trademarks and copyright. With software, logos and such are trademarked so other people can't claim or suggest they are the group who makes the software or claim trademarks on the same logo and try to charge royalties. This happened to Linux when Linus Torvalds didn't trademark the name Linux so some dick did and tried to charge royalties to Linux distributors. The "copyright" refers to ownership of the actual software. Whoever owns the copyright can choose to release the software under whatever terms they want.
Also, to Syphon8: Firefox only releases their code under an open source license, their binaries are released under Mozilla's own EULA unlike most other open source projects.
I'm pretty sure I'm right about this but I'm not a lawyer. Correct me if I'm wrong. - iceschade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Well, despite the fact that the Microsoft Alumni Network isn't ACTUALLY Microsoft...
The old MSN spaces logo looked very similar too.
http://www.opinios.com/images/msn_spaces.gif - Nuak, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10MSN Spaces logo was also very similar
- SweetyCheeks, on 10/11/2007, -10/+16@Branden...
If they are not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation, then why the hell are they using the "Microsoft" name.
That just does not wash. Using the Microsoft name implies a relationship (or "affiliation") with them. - jackal1291, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14Jesus christ people, "Microsoft Alumni Network is not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation." Read it before coming up with an elaborate conspiracy theory...
- Speed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'm assuming that since they're alumini of Microsoft, they got some kind of employee discount (hence the ad saying MEMBERS of MSA can get the discounted Vista).
- glensvodka, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sure I would, but if I was wrong I wouldn't blame someone else. Don't blame the submitter if you make false assumptions.
- trueisnotfalse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5It's a freakin' Yin Yang. So Apple ripped it off too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Yin_yang.svg
- jon3k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4OP - Do you know what YMMV means?
- MalDON, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Open source is one thing, but protecting your ideas is another. Just because a product is open sourced does not mean the name of the product can be trademarked. Just think about it.
- xed122333, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Microsoft doesn't own this site. In fact, they have no connection to it. Check the whois if you don't believe me: http://www.whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=msanet&tld=org
- chorne, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Observation noted and seconded.
- Kbiscu1t, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Weird, I never thought about that...come to think of it, I think that may be possible!
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Microsoft Alumni Network is not affiliated with Microsoft Corporation."
