- nemoder, on 04/27/2008, -6/+307The videos even work perfectly fine in Linux with the user agent switcher set to IE. There's just no excuse for this.
- insllvn, on 04/27/2008, -6/+73User Agent Switcher add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59
an XML file you can import to give you a large range of user agents to play with: http://techpatterns.com/downloads/firefox/useragen ...
Also, I can confirm that switching the user agent to IE6 (WinXP) works. This is blacklisting Linux (and I imagine BSD and other) users plain and simple.- trogdoor, on 04/27/2008, -5/+21It's not a blacklist it's a whitelist, this seems much more like laziness than malice.
- AlexBellisBrown, on 04/27/2008, -14/+11I sent a email to Fox new online, asking weather they plan to do anything about this.... i´m waiting for a reply, and a excuse...
- danielsamuels, on 04/27/2008, -4/+28I hope you spell checked it before you sent it.
- MattS, on 04/27/2008, -9/+16Spell check won't help this guy. I think an English grammar book and Dictionary are more in order...
- arcticblue, on 04/27/2008, -2/+16Hmm, I didn't know "dictionary" was a proper noun.
- AlexBellisBrown, on 04/27/2008, -1/+26You try living in a different country (Spain) for 7 years, not speaking English much. Of course, you make silly mistakes, and I apologize.
- xtraa, on 04/27/2008, -4/+7what? why apologize!?
its english, the cheapest and most conveniant communication form on the web. no one cares about details like grammar or spellchecking, as long as everyone else understands it. the only ppl whining about this are mostly native english speakers.
you can ignore them. most of them doesnt even speak a second language, lol. - TheLoneHoot, on 04/27/2008, -1/+4@xtraa
I bet if someone made a technical glitch in a discussion of Dungeons & Dragons, you'd be all over them though. - nmnnotmyname, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4Most people here don't seem to know there are places outside of the USA, like the technically illiterate don't know of OS's outside of Windows (or what an OS is for that matter)
- whodathunk, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5I have a special user-agent-switcher entry of 'Firefox 6 on Windows 7' for sites like that. Browsers from the future seem to always work.
- trogdoor, on 04/27/2008, -5/+21It's not a blacklist it's a whitelist, this seems much more like laziness than malice.
- OMNOMNOM, on 04/27/2008, -4/+63What that means is that it isn't incapable of working under Linux, they just block it so it won't work under Linux, those slimy bastards. Oh, well. Who's going to miss a little bit of Fox News? We are, after all, Digg, the greatest source of news in the world.
- GawtMilk, on 04/27/2008, -5/+25Digg and Fox are not news sources. It's infotainment. If I read Digg for my source of going-ons in the world, I'd be terrified. A lot of sensationalism here and on Fox, little fact-checking. Digg reminds me of McCarthyism and the red scare -- some Joe Nobody makes wild accusations, the press ran out to submit the story to get a competitive edge, but didn't go through fact checking, as there "wasn't enough time" to get the newspapers out to readers. Juicy information from rawstory or Huffington Post is often debunked with as little as a visit to snopes, but we still read and Digg because it's fun to hear that Obama is a space alien, McCain ruined the Treaty of Versaille by filibuster and Hillary is a zionist. It's infotainment, pure and simple. The reason people come here is often for the comments or self-promotion; in fact read the headlines of a major newspaper, very little is reported on Digg.
- Shadow120, on 04/27/2008, -1/+13oh u
- zeabu, on 04/27/2008, -1/+6Although Digg may be not a proper newssource as you said, it sometimes leads me to articles on respected newssources, which I otherwise would have missed.
That said, Digg is complementary, not my primary source. It also gives me insight in how other people conceive the news, good or bad.- Midnitte, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3And with that being said, who the ***** watches (or in the case of their website) fox news? Hate linux users? I thought they hated the entire human race...
Excuse me as I go watch a respectable news show like The Daily Show.
- Midnitte, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3And with that being said, who the ***** watches (or in the case of their website) fox news? Hate linux users? I thought they hated the entire human race...
- directedition, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2I dunno. If digg were someone's only news source, they would have thought Ron Paul was a shoe-in.

- aldenhg, on 04/27/2008, -8/+17Firefox under WINE works, too. They're (even more so than before) obviously bastards.
- mllawso, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3... Um, even if the site didn't work in firefox on linux, it would still work in wine; mainly because firefox under wine would install the windows versions of all plugins that don't work in linux.
- CapeNadir, on 04/27/2008, -107/+12Excuse? All linux users are retards with 'something to prove' who stubbornly cling to a near-broken operating system that can't fix itself or reach even a usable point after what, 7 versions? And worst of all, they won't admit that linux is a piece o' *****! I predict you assholes to come back with 'linux is actually really cool, noob' and 'go back to windows xp' coupled with a digg down. ***** you guys and go to hell! Fox News did something right for once - not supporting broken ***** that clogs the tubes!
- latova, on 04/27/2008, -6/+71linux is actually really cool, noob
go back to windows xp - smacksaw, on 04/27/2008, -7/+49Dude, you're way more against Linux than Linux users are for it.
If anyone is a retard, it's you. - Narpas, on 04/27/2008, -2/+56It's funny because you think there have been only seven versions of Linux.
- Bobski, on 04/27/2008, -1/+44Its even funnier because he doesn't realize Linux is a kernel, not an operating system.
- triplehelix, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2you'd think it could have made general by now.
- Bobski, on 04/27/2008, -1/+44Its even funnier because he doesn't realize Linux is a kernel, not an operating system.
- Shadow120, on 04/27/2008, -3/+15i think he mean't to replace linux with "XP", that's had about 7 versions.. Linux "Versions" are called "Distros" lrn2internet
- MiracleBlue, on 04/27/2008, -3/+15Exhibit A: CapeNadir, epic fail in all its retarded glory.
- SystemError51, on 04/27/2008, -1/+9If there's any near-broken operating system out there, it's Windows. Every one hopes that they gonna fix some *major* issues in after what? 7 Versions?
- cheddarhead92, on 04/27/2008, -1/+9I think somebody had a bad childhood experience.... raped by an uncle linus maybe?
- starkruzr, on 04/27/2008, -1/+110/10
Troll harder. - argonsax, on 04/27/2008, -1/+1Latest stable version of Linux is 2.6.25 as of the writing of this comment. No, that's not seven versions. Two major versions, lots of major patches, many more minor patches. You can't really call any UNIX near-broken when properly maintained, because approximately 90% of the physical machines that form the interconnected networks that make up the Internet as a whole are running some form of UNIX, and are thus representative of it's functionality. Linux is now running a large portion of those *NIX machines, and that proportion is constantly growing. Google even modifies and uses Linux kernels, and in my experience, I haven't gotten any near-broken results from them.
- natastna2, on 04/27/2008, -4/+2Yeah, Linux does suck balls. The only people I know who use it are ***** or blacks.
- latova, on 04/27/2008, -6/+71linux is actually really cool, noob
- IntruderII, on 04/27/2008, -2/+80Hello? It's common knowledge that terrorists prefer Linux.
- Narpas, on 04/27/2008, -1/+13Pfft. Yeah. Terrorists and Pokemon.
- Midnitte, on 04/27/2008, -1/+0But what about Magic: The Gathering?

- jasmin888, on 04/27/2008, -12/+2Is that same guy they call Obama? I think that's what I just heard on "Fair and Balanced".
Really wouldn't like to miss such an important source of news. - telepheedian, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2CNN is just as bad, if not worse.
- jasmin888, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3"CNN is just as bad, if not worse."

Must start check that one out too.

- nmnnotmyname, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Yeah, Fox ought to do a news story on this terror-OS immediately.
- ninja0, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2duh, ever seen 24? they hack ***** using linux in merely 2.5 seconds!

- thatsmyaibo, on 04/27/2008, -25/+13Linux + Anti-Fox News = Front page
This story is just a stupid claim to promote a ***** blog.- chazuk, on 04/27/2008, -6/+9Why wont the ***** videos play when I boot into Ubuntu then?
- diffuze, on 04/27/2008, -1/+16Confirmed.
I tried konqueror's browser identification and it works like a charm.
Then why one would want to go to fox fo read news.. well that's another issue. - kamisama, on 04/27/2008, -4/+4Sure, but you can hardly call that good practice. It should work on all systems, if not get your crap off the net till it does fox.
- lunarcanary, on 04/27/2008, -11/+3Some of you "simple-minded" plebs may think the above comment is plain, dead-ended, and merely an opinion people digg up because they are "fanboys". Sure, "empirically" it may be a "useless" comment that solved nothing. That's because you don't see the true beauty of digg.
I think it added to the conversation, delivering true intellectual discourse to the matter at hand.
This guy is no normal digg user. He doesn't have that couch-bound bully mentality. He doesn't protect the silver-lining of corporations like some fanboy. He makes legitimate contribution that make the abstract mind enter new perceptions of reality. He really breaks the barrier. I would like to say, what the hell are you doing here? - ZeroFive1, on 04/27/2008, -2/+11I don't even go to FOX. Who gives a *****.
- ninja0, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Agreed, but its still BS.
- tripzero, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1umm. people who *do* go to fox???
- JettaMan, on 04/27/2008, -5/+6This is ridiculous. If I try to view videos on Comedy Central they won't play in my Firefox browse. Does the Daily Show hate Firefox? Well maybe if you are a conspiracy nut, otherwise it's just typical web problems that all sites seem to have. The anti-Fox BS from the left is growing old.
- LethalGeek, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Good business practice on the Internet making sure you can reach as many of the PC/MAC configuration types out there without having to jump through hoops. If you cut off x% of your market, you're only shooting yourself in the foot.
- JettaMan, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Agreed, which is why this Fox story is pure BS.
- FairDinkumMate, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2Comedy Central videos play fine in my Firefox browser running on Ubuntu Hardy Heron. What are you takling about?
- maninalift, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Are you sure you aren't identifying yourself as Windows?
- phaedrusiszen, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0Works just fine in Gentoo and Firefox 3 beta 5.
Certainly not identifying as Windows.

- maninalift, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Are you sure you aren't identifying yourself as Windows?
- maninalift, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1he whole lotta you on this thread are talking *****. The site would work on Linux if it didn't include a little script which checks whether you are trunning windows or mac and refuses to work if you aren't. That is what people were testing with the Agent Switcher
- LethalGeek, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Good business practice on the Internet making sure you can reach as many of the PC/MAC configuration types out there without having to jump through hoops. If you cut off x% of your market, you're only shooting yourself in the foot.
- wefarrell, on 04/27/2008, -4/+2Is this even legal? Is there some action we can take to stop this anti linux *****?
- baldduck, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2Umm, yeah, it's pretty legal.
- TheLoneHoot, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Are you daft? They can do whatever the hell they want. Does it suck for us Linux users, yes, but it's not up to us to tell FoxNoise what browsers to support. If you're going to FoxNoise for information you have bigger problems than browser errors.
- maninalift, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Depends on the country it's tried in. I'm sure you all know the fair competition regulations in Europe tend to be enforced much more strongly.

- salomejones, on 04/27/2008, -4/+9I'm still trying to understand why anyone who would use Linux in the first place (embracing free software via the GPL) would be interested in anything that Fox News has to say, particularly on video.
- Timbit42, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5We need to keep an eye on them so we have opportunities to preach our own ideals to them.
- kent1146, on 04/27/2008, -2/+5Why bother? He'll just tell you that it's a trick from a liberal hacker trying to turn you into a muslim-loving gay black jewish democrat that hates America and loves spicy food.
- bretkuhns, on 04/27/2008, -0/+10To whom it may concern,
When I attempted to view the video section of the Fox News Online website, I got a notice that the section is only viewable on Windows and Mac operating systems. As a web developer, I find it strange that such an OS limitation would be put in place as the web's inherent properties make it entirely system independent (in a perfect world, I know). It would be at least remotely understandable if the section was in fact unusable in Linux, but when forcing a fake user agent for IE7 in Windows instead of Firefox 3 in Linux, the website loads, displays, and functions properly.
It's rather short-sighted of your developers to block Linux users for no reason, but if you'd rather not have our traffic on your site, I suppose that's your own loss.
Thank you,
--
Bret Kuhns - ScottyWZ, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6The company actually responsible for this is a Maven Networks, Inc. They provide streaming services for Fox, ABC, and other companies. - Heywoodj, on 04/27/2008, -2/+16Same here.
Guess anyone smart enough to be able to use Linux isn't welcome at fox.- compu73rg33k, on 04/27/2008, -0/+5Fox: You must be this un-intelligent to enter this site.

- Heywoodj, on 04/27/2008, -2/+16Same here.
- DangerCollie, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4Same here. I didn't get the error message until passing mavenapps.net. Can't find anything on them other than they seem to serve content to cnet and gannet besides faux news. Silly to take a snob swipe at a fairly sophisticated fraction of your user base. Not a large group but vocal. If you're an outsource provider and that techno elitism reflects back on the parent property, that's not the way to build your business.
- jeff303, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2I really doubt they know they're doing it. More likely they just outsourced part of their content distribution to this company which doesn't really know or care what Linux is.
- GratefulGroover, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1i got:

- canthraxp, on 04/27/2008, -13/+439Guess that's another reason to use linux, no spoonfuls of crap from fox news.
- nphase, on 04/27/2008, -2/+6Yeah, what are they doing viewing foxnews.com anyways?
- rusty0101, on 04/28/2008, -0/+2I'm thinking they were looking for entertainment. After all Fox is an entertainment company, right? And when you watch Fox News, you can't help but laugh. Or Cry. Comedy and Tragedy are the two forms of entertainment that people try to produce, so I think they're doing their job very well.
Doesn't really happen to be the variety of entertainment related to news that I find interesting, but that's my taste, not necessarily yours. I'm not a big fan of Talk Soup, but at least they are up front with the view that their 'news' should be taken light heartedly.

- dyefade, on 04/27/2008, -1/+6Well, having just done my dissertation using OpenOffice.org Writer, I wonder what it is that makes this a "sub-standard" tool.

- BGog, on 04/27/2008, -0/+27It's a crime that the platform is even transmitted in html headers. I cannot think of a single reason that it should matter. Of course you need to know what browser it is... Also if they have the ability to play certain types of files but the platform is irrelevant.
- ByteGuerilla, on 04/27/2008, -1/+5While I agree with you in principle, and thus dugg you up, it can be a very useful piece of information.
One of the ways it is useful is when serving application installers from a web site, you can collect the platform data and present the client with the appropriate installer/dmg/pkg/etc. right away, rather than having them go to a list of download platforms. It's a small step but it means a lot in the field of HCI. - Timbit42, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Perhaps the options could be transmitted to the browser and it could download the appropriate option for the host OS. This way the web site doesn't need to know.
Ideally, web sites should not be able to tell what the browser is. Is this the solution to non-standard web browsers?
Personally, I would like web browsers to send window width instead of screen width. What does screen width have to do with a web site? Even if my browser is full screen, I may have a sidebar open. Perhaps Vista's sidebar will convince web developers that browser window width is more useful to them.- Qumahlin, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1"Ideally, web sites should not be able to tell what the browser is. Is this the solution to non-standard web browsers?"
While that would be ideal, its currently not practical unless you want to get all the browser developers together to make sure that all implement their functions and standards in exactly the same way. Otherwise a large amount of websites will look like trash since they won't know whether to use Standards or Quirks mode for your browser.
- Qumahlin, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1"Ideally, web sites should not be able to tell what the browser is. Is this the solution to non-standard web browsers?"
- prol, on 04/27/2008, -0/+0You don't have to transmit it for most servers. You could just give the wrong OS in the header anyway. Shouldn't linux users know how to do that or something?

They are screening for specific operating systems before browsers agents. There is no reason for this other than depriving specific operating systems. Their code is intentionally blocking all systems other than Mac or Windows. How *****!- PaulRay, on 04/27/2008, -3/+25Probably because Linux/Firefox will reject the stupid adware, spyware and other crapware they want to install. Screw 'Em. As many said, it's Fox, who cares?
- dropbox, on 04/27/2008, -1/+35You're probably right, but I was just remarking on their ***** coding practices. First off, they're serving an XHTML document yet using a JavaScript hack to circumvent the XML parser so they can load Flash through a depreciated embed tag. And then they actually make the choice to support Firefox, but only on Windows. Whoever coded this site was retarded, plain and simple.
- gquaglia, on 04/27/2008, -2/+7This isn't limited to just Foxnews. There are many sites out there coded by MS brainwashed webmasters.
- Qumahlin, on 04/27/2008, -1/+3I fail to see why people keep blaming MS when it clearly shows that Safari/OSX can use the site....

- Roy911, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1No one loves a grammar Nazi.
- darlingt, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Yes, but the power of the "schwa-stika" overrules love.

- tomis, on 04/27/2008, -17/+23Get over yourself random whiny Linux blogger, Fox News doesn't give a damn what OS you use. They just picked a poor streaming solution which obviously works good enough for them, that's all. Drop them a nice note and then either fake your UID, or don't visit their broken site.
Honestly it's not that big a deal. It's not as if they're whitehouse.gov and they're blocking all Linux users or something...- grimward, on 04/27/2008, -13/+8Yeah, you just gotta love the whole typical linux whinery about the world not supporting their solution, well guess what? if they gave a *****, they *would* support your solution, and whining isn't going to make them care either! Article buried, reason: linux "the world doesn't revolve around my distro" whinery.
- SolidSnak, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I guess you haven't used linux before.
- grimward, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1*pats slackware server beside him*

- salomejones, on 04/27/2008, -2/+5"Fake your UID"?
- grimward, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2UID = User ID one would presume. (most likely referring to browser agent)
- adznet, on 04/27/2008, -2/+1ooh that would be a nice scandal...if whitehouse.gov blocked Linux XD
- bullwinkle, on 04/27/2008, -0/+0The US Post Office already has...or will on 5/12/08.
"After 5/12/08, the option to print a label without postage will no longer be
available within Click-N-Ship. If you would like to print labels without
postage after this date, please download USPS Shipping Assistant."
No Mac or Linux Shipping Assistant and requires .Net as well....ugh!

- deity, on 04/27/2008, -11/+4Maybe a better question is, do all digg submitters hate Fox News.
I don't quite understand the hatred of fox news. Most of the people who hate fox are perfectly happy to be spoon fed propaganda from the other side. One would think that they could handle a different point of view without blowing a fuse, but then again the left is just as intolerant of different points of view as the right.- hass, on 04/27/2008, -2/+1Maybe it's because they claim to be fair and balanced, but they do things such as framing their topics in the form of leading questions. Example: "Why do atheists inspire such hatred?" Another example: "What do we really know about Barack Obama? Is Barack Obama more liberal than he says he is?" So.. "Does foxnews.com Hate Linux Users?" You decide.
- Timbit42, on 04/27/2008, -2/+1Perhaps Digg is overrun by non-Americans who do not get their news from FOX nor CNN.
I get my news from a variety of places. My hope is that this reduces bias.
- landmonster, on 04/27/2008, -17/+7Are Linux users the most whining bitches of all time?
Join us on Fox News for this in depth look after this short break! - cfuse, on 04/27/2008, -2/+7Doesn't everyone?
- iPenis, on 04/27/2008, -5/+27Not as much as they hate the truth
- Malnilion, on 04/27/2008, -20/+11Fox = news for sheep
Windows and OS X = operating systems for sheep
By studying their demographic, Fox must have realized it doesn't need to cater to Linux.- theclashrocker, on 04/27/2008, -5/+2BBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!(to windows and OS X; not Fox--hell no.)
- strangewill, on 04/27/2008, -4/+13"Everyone that doesn't conform to my ideas are sheep!"
- Echomote, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2By following his ideas, you'd be a sheep anyway.
- ATLien74, on 04/27/2008, -6/+1Windows sucks donkey balls, but OSX is sweet. You're just hating because you are probably too poor to afford a mac...but if I had a PC it would most definitley have Ubuntu on it, and not Winblow$.
- pickles46, on 04/27/2008, -2/+3Not so much poor but just more intelligent, why would I buy a more expensive computer that I cannot customize so that when the technology dies it does the same. I customize my machine and I do have Ubuntu on it, and I'm enjoying every minute of it. You are just another mac fanboy.
- nmnnotmyname, on 04/28/2008, -0/+1Trying to steal some digs and promote Mac at the same time? Sorry, As much as i love my linux box this is just plain ***** stupid. Go die.
- Malnilion, on 04/28/2008, -1/+1The dreaded /sarcasm omission.
- al11588, on 04/28/2008, -0/+0I seriously wish death on you and your family(Seriously).
