Did Microsoft Try to Get Sun to Sue Linux [Users]?
boycottnovell.com — Today, Pamela Jones (of Groklaw) has a little insight. Based on Jonathan Schwarz ’s blog, she suspects that Microsoft may have tried to encourage Sun to sue Linux (the infamous ‘proxy manoeuvre’). Here is what Jonathan says…
- 631 diggs
- digg it
- mournsanity, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
- Coniferous, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4Me neither. Isn't this antitrust? Shouldn't they be fined for this?
- BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+21Sun's a smart company, it's a good thing for them & everyone else other than MS that they chose to compete on technology rather than legal hand waving
- geronimo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25Sun gives us ZFS. Microsoft gives us threats of lawsuits.
- slapthemonkey, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19Sun is moving in the right direction.
- djoog, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4the site is interesting ...
I just feel so bad about Microsoft i would like to tell them to f* off. But novell is junk. I will never buy from you.
p.s.
I feel so enraged by this it drove me to do my first comment on digg !. - Kinjiru, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10It would be in the typical Microshaft tradition after all... steal, intimidate and use any underhanded method possible to try to force a monopoly.
All the latest ***** just shows the reality of M$ being terrified of *nix all the more..- Herolint, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12As well they should be. Look how far Apple has come since dumping their old OS and going with a Unix-based one. The more and more people become familiar with the power and stability of Unix, the more and more people will leave Windows.
- Kinjiru, on 10/11/2007, -8/+4@ herolint
Nice to see someone actually willingly admit OSX is *nix based and not it's own OS anymore.. just a customized interface. :)
Personally I can't stand a crapintosh.. but even I have to admit that was a smart move! Something we very rarely if ever see from M$. - mrsteveman1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Technically it IS its own OS, almost everything is different from most Unix systems, however there are a good amount of BSD syscalls in the kernel, there are also mach syscalls and some other new ones.
The rest of the system isn't layered the way Linux is like this: kernel -- shell -- xserver
OS X is more like: bsd/mach kernel -- random subsystems -- gui
Theres some info in apples documentation that shows how its layered.
But there is in fact BSD support in the kernel for a number of things. - Herolint, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@Kinjiru (I like your forbidden name, by the way)
Personally, I really like OS X. I've been a Linux user since 1994, with a little OpenBSD sprinkled in for good measure. While Linux remains my favorite OS (particularly Debian), I did use Windows for things like Cubase, Photoshop, and QuickBooks. However, OS X has freed me from that. It gives me all the power of BASH (which is something Windows sorely lacks, and yes I do know about Cygwin) and all the support I need for my commercial apps. Sure, I had to upgrade from Windows versions to OS X versions of my software, but there were updates to Cubase and Photoshop available and the companies gave me the Mac versions for the price of a regular upgrade.
For me, Apple machines provide the best possible support for both commercial apps and all my favorite Linux utilities and programs.
A lot of people complain that Apple hardware is expensive, but when I priced out a 17" MacBook Pro against Dells and HPs with similar specs, the price was pretty much equal and I got the bonus of a nice aluminum laptop and a nice OS; which is something neither HP or Dell could offer. :)
- RobotGizmo, on 10/11/2007, -12/+8Common guys, this links to a Novell & Microsoft hate site, and the title of the article starts with "SPECULATION". Why is this even remotely considered newsworthy?
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2You haven't been on Digg long, have you ? That's how they roll.
- cornswalled, on 10/11/2007, -23/+7Pure FUD. This is just another Open Sores Zealot trying to paint corporations as evil.
- VinceNoir, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15You should change your name to "cornholed".
- cornswalled, on 10/11/2007, -13/+7@VinceNoir
Yeah, right, like I've never heard THAT one before.

- techgeodude, on 10/11/2007, -8/+0Wow this is getting interesting day by day ,so many things said and accusations by both parties .Now we are being said Sun has joined hands with Microsoft with help of Ken Brown.
Whats next ? - edm1950, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6This blog should go with tabloid typography, maybe a few postings about frog/human babies and Elvis sightings. We'd like postings about the Jobs/Ballmer/Rose love triangle too. This guy shouldn't limit himself.
- hpfilter, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5This is wat Linus Torvalds had to say:
"So the whole, 'We have a list and we're not telling you,' itself should tell you something," Torvalds said of Microsoft's stance in the Fortune story. And for good measure, he added: "Don't you think that if Microsoft actually had some really foolproof patent, they'd just tell us and go, 'nyaah, nyaah, nyaah!'" - weebit, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7It is no big mystery about Microsoft bashing, sulking, screaming wolf, and stomping on anyone that gets in their way. So when I first read this it was not a "OH My God!" moment. I do give Sun brownie points for not being afraid to turn Microsoft down.
- 7of7, on 10/11/2007, -13/+5Groklaw once again proves that it is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the FUD generators in the FOSS community. Give it a rest.
- Darcy, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Half the web seems to be a mouthpiece for the open source FUDsters. Talk about hypocrites; they go on and on about Microsoft spreading FUD, yet the FOSS community spew their hate filled anti-MS propaganda on a daily basis. This article is a great example. They have recycled this story over and over again, each time giving it a new bit of spin so that the story remains on the front-page of sites like Digg and Slashdot for has long as possible.
I would agree that Ballmer is a complete idiot, and I wish he would step down as CEO before he causes any more damage. All he’s done here is given the “M$ is evil” morons another 6 months worth of easy bashing material. When it comes to spreading FUD though, this is one area that the open source community really do kick Microsofts ass.

- SignorDildo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2Given Microsoft's machiavelian approach to business and marketting, and its previous involvement in manipulating IP holders (SCO), if I were in the F/OSS development community I'd seriously consider auditing my code - particularly if that code was contributed to by third parties who exist on the fringe.
We should all already be aware of the astroturfing done on Microsoft's behalf (a devious way of appearing completely unbiased while the opposite is true), so I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to sneak it - or anyones' - IP into any F/OSS project if they could get away with it.
Even though - on the outside, at least - it appears that "Barmy" Ballmer's rhetoric is more of the same old F.U.D., he must realise that F.U.D. alone won't serve his needs. We can bet he has a complete and thorough stratergy for dealing with the F/OSS threat - and that stratergy will extend far beyond bad mouthing the free software movement. Microsoft doesn't simply want to hurt the F/OSS feeling, it wants to irreprably damage it. THAT'S the Microsoft way; they didn't get where they are today by issuing vague threats. With that in mind, don't be surprised of the lengths that Microsoft will go to when it comes to savaging their competitors.
If you've got F/OSS source out there that is contributed to by the community, perhaps its time to start reading between the lines [of code]. - MasterGrief, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I have a question.
Does any of this matter? - naio, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Someone should kick schestowitz from Digg for the sake of truth. His ability to spread FUD is amazing!
